Cynopsis: Kids!
03/28/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 28, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Walden Media LLC and Penguin Young Readers Group have entered into multi-year publishing, film and TV joint venture. The movie and TV properties will be based on new, forthcoming and backlist titles; and Penguin Young Readers Group will publish books adapted from Walden’s screenplays and other related tie-in titles. The first title under the deal, Joseph Bruchac’s upcoming book, Jim Thorpe, Original All-American, will be published August 2006. The book, based on the life of Thorpe’s college football career, is being adapted for film by Walden and will be released under the title Carlisle School. Walden is currently in various stages of development and production on movie adaptations of Penguin Young Readers Group book titles from its imprints.
Tokyopop and HarperCollins Publishers have joined in an agreement to create a new line of co-branded manga titles, featuring titles based on existing HarperCollins properties. HarperCollins kid and young adult authors will also create original manga, such as Teen Idol and Avalon High, among numerous others. All books will be developed in manga format by Tokyopop, which will be responsible for managing the creation of manga text and artwork. The first manga titles, will be based on one Meg Cabot’s young adult book series including The Princess Diaries, All American Girl, and Ready or Not, and are scheduled for publication in 2007. The goal is to ramp up to publishing 24 titles a year.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
PorchLight Entertainment has acquired TV, home video, licensing and merchandising distribution rights to Sardine Productions’ 2D animated series, My Goldfish is Evil! Targeted to K8-12, PorchLight will launch its worldwide sales efforts of the series at MIP 2006 next month. The series has been pre-sold to CBC and Radio-Canada.
France 5 has picked up the rights to the stop-motion animated preschool series Lunar Jim (26 X 30 or 52 X 11 min) from Alliance Atlantis International Content Distribution. It is slated to launch on France 5 in fall 2006. The series is also set to launch next month on BBC and CBeebies, on Germany’s Kika and ZDF at a later date, and Canada’s SRC. The series’ interactive website (www.lunarjim.com) launched last month and features games and activities as well as section for parents. Discovery Kids (Latin America) and CBC (Canada) plan to incorporate elements of the Lunar Jim site into their websites, and ABC Australia already has a link to the site from its website. Additionally, the BBC is developing a Lunar Jim tennis game for its website. The series is co-produced by The Halifax Film Company and Alliance Atlantis.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Paramount has shifted the release date for the Nickelodeon Movies feature Nacho Libre, starring Jack Black, by two weeks: from June 2 to June 16. A Nickelodeon Movies/Black & White production of a Jared Hess film, Nacho Libre is a comedy about Ignacio, a guy who is a cook by day at a Mexican orphanage and works as Lucha Libre wrestler at night to raise money for the orphans. Nacho Libre is directed by Hess, who also penned the screenplay with Jerusha Hess and Mike White. The movie is produced by Mike White, Jack Black, Julia Pistor, and David Klawans.
This weekend Boomerang will celebrate its 6th anniversary with a foolish programming stunt – an April Foolish stunt that is, with Mr. T in his animated form pitted against a lineup of other cartoons in Taking On Mr. T, Saturday, April 1, 6a-9p. Each hour Mr. T will go up against another series with the loser of the hour headed off the network forever. The network will provide some running commentary and on-air updates so viewers will know which way things are leaning. Boomerang will also air four half-hour episodes of the animated Mr. T series that haven’t aired on the network previously. If you haven’t seen the series in some time, or if by some freakish chance you have not ever seen the Mr. T animated series (and please don’t tell anyone if this is the case), you ought to tune in.
Casting Call: Sci-Fi Channel, comic book author Stan Lee and his POW Entertainment, Inc, and Bruce Nash’s Nash Entertainment will hold an open casting call for the reality series Who Wants to Be A Superhero on April 4, in LA. Potential participants should consider attending in their superhero costume and be prepared to show their superhero stuff and present their credo. More requirements and entry information can be found at www.whowantstobeasuperhero.com.
