Disney Junior has established the Disney Junior Educational Resource Group, led by veteran educational researcher Vicki Ariyasu. Ariyasu, a longtime Disney Junior consultant, will serve as executive director, leading the network’s in-house team responsible for curriculum development across television, online, games, apps. She’ll also focus group studies of Disney Junior content and brand extensions. In addition, Ariyasu will manage a council of prominent academics, the Disney Junior Advisory Board, which she helped establish. The Board will further guide the preschool network’s curriculum in the fields of transmedia, storytelling, early education, language development, diversity, emotional learning, digital trends and literacy.

Get ready for UNO on TV. Mattel and The Gurin Co. will be heading to Cannes next month to shop the new joint production, UNO: The Game Show. The two companies are transforming the popular card game into a show, available as a half-hour daily game show with a $100,000 jackpot and an hour long primetime version in which players compete for $1 million. The Gurin Co. has secured worldwide television rights to the game and will be distributing it for the first time at MIP-TV. “The UNO brand’s goal is to be everywhere fans are from the beloved card game to online play to mobile,” said Stephanie Cota, SVP, global marketing, games, for Mattel. “We are looking forward to creating a highly entertaining and engaging show that incorporates competition and prizing, anchored in our UNO mantra of ‘fast fun for everyone’.”

More MIP-TV News: Moonscoop has notched a broadcast deal for its show Chloe’s Closet to air on Channel 5’s preschool block Milkshake! beginning in this spring. Season two of Chloe’s Closet (52 x 11) will launch at MIP-TV.

PBS Kids debuted the first-ever Sid The Science Kid movie yesterday (25), with encore airings set for March 29 and 31. NCircle Entertainment will release “Sid the Science Kid: The Movie” on DVD and on iTunes April 2 ($12.99).

Digital Update

Since its launch earlier this month, PBS Kids’ first app designed specifically to help parents build early math and literacy skills for kids ages 4 and under has been downloaded 162,000 times. PBS Parents Play & Learn, available for iOS, Android, Google Play and Nook, features more than a dozen games parents can play with their kids, each themed around a familiar location like the grocery store or a restaurant. The free app is bilingual, English and Spanish, and is aimed at parents with young children. “Mobile device usage among all communities – including low-income areas – continues to grow; according to a recent WestEd study, more than 60% of low-income parents reported they had access to a smart phone and more than 30% said they had access to a tablet,” said Lesli Rotenberg, GM of children’s programming at PBS.

Toon Goggles entered a broad partnership with Toronto-based Bejuba! Entertainment. Toon Goggles added Bejabu’s CGI animated series Jibber Jabber to the lineup of kids content it offers on its streaming service. In addition, Bejuba! will be providing consulting services for Toon Goggles, with a focus on production, marketing, licensing and acquisitions. The two companies will work together on new marketing and branding initiatives of the Toon Goggles platform.

Licensing News

The Care Bears continue to take on Taiwan after a new deal between AG Properties, the licensing division of American Greetings Corp., and licensing agent Medialink with Entertainment Machine Operator, for a limited-edition cross-over collection with Rody. The one-year promotion comprises a range of products, including tote bags, to be sold at Rody stores and other department and specialty stores through the end of this year. Taiwan has been a breakout market for Care Bears particularly in the past several months, with 10 licensees on board covering apparel, stationery, footwear, accessories, bags, and more.

Preschool series The Hive, a hit in the U.K. and Australia, now has its own dedicated online shop run by Heroes for Kids. The deal, brokered by licensing agent Space Enterprises, means The Hive products can now be bought via a dedicated e-commerce portal at thehiveshop.co.uk. Toys, gift wrap and cake toppers are available now; books and DVDs will be added shortly.

Congrats Big Miracle, Universal’s PG-rated film about a family who work together to save trapped whales. The film picked up a Humane Genesis Award at the Saturday gala presented by the Humane Society of the United States. The Genesis Awards celebrate the awareness of animal issues and the news and entertainment media’s work in reporting on them.
