Questions swirled around AT&T‘s plan to acquire T-Mobile for $39 billion in a bid to become the largest U.S. carrier. Many expected the deal to encounter regulatory hurdles – reducing the field to what will end up being only 2 players will likely mean rate hikes and fewer choices for consumers. Some analysts framed the deal in terms of Apple’s iPhone. In a Q&A on its website, T-Mobile reminded customers that the deal would likely take a year to close, so it won’t be able to start selling the popular smartphone until then, at which time a 4G model will be available. AT&T’s desire to expand its 4G network as quickly as possible – for both the iPhone 5 and other 4G smartphones – is no doubt the impetus behind the deal. T-Mobile, which held out in investing in 3D technology, currently has the largest existing 4G infrastructure in the U.S.
FiOS TV has signed a deal with ESPN to add the 24-hour ESPN 3D channel to its line up from April 5, just in time for the Masters and the NBA Playoffs. Turner Sports, CBS Sports and NCAA‘s ready-for-prime-time March Madness on Demand offering, available for the iPad for the first time this year, has seen a 47% increase in total visits across online and mobile through Sunday. The New York Times plans to allow any blog or third-party links to render an unlimited amount of stories accessible to non-subscribers after its pay wall is established, according to a QA with NYTimes digital chief Martin Nisenholtz on AllThingsD. Now fans will share responsibility in the “Madden Curse.” ESPN.com is encouraging fans to participate in bracket-style voting to select the cover athlete for EA‘s Madden NFL 12 game; the winner will be revealed on ESPN’s SportsNation show on April 27.
