A brand new exclusive Angry Birds animated short film, Angry Birds Space, will premiere on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons tomorrow, Wednesday, March 21 at 7p, during SpongeBob SquarePants on Nickelodeon and Power Rangers Samurai on Nicktoons. The short debuts just ahead of Rovio’s release of its newest Angry Birds game, Angry Birds Space, for both iOS and Android devices the following day, Thursday, March 22. A Nickelodeon exclusive, following the exclusive world premiere, viewers can catch the birds at www.nick.com/watch. The Angry Birds Space short will also run on Nickelodeon channels worldwide beginning tomorrow as well.

LICENSING
Random House Children’s Books inks a new publishing partnership with Nickelodeon. Under the agreement, Random House Children’s Books will serve as the primary book publisher of Nickelodeon properties. Beginning spring 2013, the publishing program with Nickelodeon will expand to include a range of new formats, including hardcover and paperback picture books, storybooks, leveled readers, chapter books, Junior Novels, and board books. Additionally, Random House will continue publishing the coloring and activity books and Little Golden Book titles, which it has published since 2000 and 2009, respectively. These book titles are based on Nickelodeon properties, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Team Umizoomi, and Bubble Guppies. With the newly expanded partnership, Random House also will publish titles in a variety of formats based on two new Nickelodeon properties in fall 2012 – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Winx Club. Random House was the original children’s book publisher for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the 1980s. Chris Angelilli, VP & Editor-in-Chief, Executive Director, Licensed Publishing, will oversee the publishing program at Random House.
The kid-targeted online channel Toon Goggles (www.toongoggles.com) enter into a licensing deal with software company PacketVideo that will allow Toon Goggle viewers to beam programming from iPads and Android devices to their home TVs via the Twonky Beam Browser steaming app. Under the agreement, PacketVideo will feature a Toon Goggles link on the Twonky Beam Browser homepage, which viewers can click on and access the Toon Goggles library and use the app to beam the programming directly to any internet-connected TV, without any cables. Kid and families can then control the playback and volume on the TV with their tablet devices. Toon Goggles recent released a free iOS app, which provides viewers with access to its kid-centric library of 500+ hours of programming via their iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices.
American Greetings Properties (AGP), licensing agent Cookie Jar and subagent Global Licensing Limited (New Zealand) unveil two new Strawberry Shortcake licensees in New Zealand. MacEwen Apparel signs on to create girls’ apparel including outerwear, sleepwear, underwear and hats that will be available in April 2012 in Farmers stores, among others. Waikato Valley Chocolates create and offer Strawberry Shortcake-branded chocolates at The Warehouse. This line of Easter chocolates and gifts will be available beginning in March 2012.
Glow Europe enters into a Easter-focused promotional partnership for its Bumpeez collectible toy line with FitKid, a UK fitness provider for kids. Designed to encourage kids to get and keep active, kids that attend FitKid’s Easter Workshops will receive a free pack of Bumpeez and will be taught some interactive activities to play with the toys.
London-based Cake has been appointed as the worldwide distributor for the K7-12 targeted animated series Fleabag Monkeyface (52×11). Fleabag Monkeyface is a Sparky Animation, Impossible Kids, Editude Pictures and Walker Productions co-production, and is based on the characters created by the British writing duo Knife and Packer. The comedy series will be available at this year’s MIPTV next month in Cannes. The series follows the adventures of Fleabag Monkeyface, a man-made half-monkey, half-boy, and his two creators Gene and Gerald. In each episode the trio hosts an edition of their TV series, ‘Gross Out TV’ in which they reveal their latest, grossest and most disgusting discoveries. Meanwhile, the evil Dr Dirk Spamflex and his sidekick, Deathbeak, plot against the three to reclaim the TV show that was taken from them. Fleabag Monkeyface launched on CITV (UK) in December 2011.
Cookie Jar Entertainment is packing its bags for MIPTV where it will showcase a full slate of programming, including 26 new episodes of action-comedy hit Johnny Test, the new mixed live-action/CGI animated series Mudpit (26×22), and titles from its library of popular properties including Caillou, Hurray for Huckle! (Busytown Mysteries), Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, among others.
Abbey Home Media Group (AHM), a UK-based creator/distributors of preschool programming content, is headed to MIPTV next month with a range of new developments and plans. AHM plans to showcase two new series at the market:
- Gobbledigook (26×30 or 52×11) – Each episode features a visit to the Gobbledigook Theme Park, where things are always a little upside down or turned around, and an daily problem that needs a solution.
- Toddler Bright (26×11) is an extension of AHM’s popular long running preschool property Baby Bright. Targeted to 1-3-year-olds, Toddler Bright explores simple concepts and language using an interactive format. The new series has been developed with scientific consultant, Professor Karmiloff-Smith, and utilizes language, illustrations and live action to bring this research to life in bite size pieces for younger kids.
Scholastic is set to publish Jeremy Lin: Rising Star, a new K8+ aimed biography of the breakout NBA player Jeremy Lin (currently a Point Guard/New York Knicks). The new books will release simultaneously on April 1, 2012, in both e-book and paperback editions (USD$4.99). Jeremy Linn: Rising Star is written by James Buckley, Jr., who has penned 60+ sports related books for kids, and chronicles Lin’s rise from humble beginnings to his worldwide basketball superstar status that has garnered him massive media and fan attention and coined the catch phrases, “linsanity” and “lincredible,” among many others.
Australian-based Halfbrick Studios (www.halfbrick.com), the developer behind games including Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, has acquired Onan Game. Based in Valencia, Spain, Onan Game, which is best known for Mandreel, a technology that allows games to support iOS, Android, Flash and HTML5 development from one C++ code base. Halfbrick titles to web platforms and Facebook, including Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride. Halfbrick also has plans to license Mandreel technology to their extended client base.
