Good morning, it’s Tuesday, March 20, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

The hi-def cable channel INHD will change its name to MOJO as of May 1. The name derives from the primetime programming block introduced on the channel last June. The network targets males and will offer new original series premiering this spring including:

  • Uncorked with Billy Merritt – premiered March 14 and airs Wednesdays at 930p; comedian Billy Merritt upgrades his beer tastes to learn about wines.
  • King of Miami – premieres May 7 at 930p; comedian Dave Hill moves to Miami to become one of the “beautiful people”.
  • I Bet You – premieres May 7 and airs Mondays at 9p; two champion poker playing friends go around the country betting each other on almost everything.
  • The Show – premieres this summer; six baseball players try to go from the minors to the major leagues. Joe Montegna narrates.

INHD has also returned two series to its line-up, London Live and Three Sheets.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

FOX will debut On the Lot with two one-hour audition specials on May 22 at 9p (following American Idol) and also on May 24 at 9p (following the third season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance?). The series will eventually settle into its time period routine starting June 4 with one-hour “Film Premiere” Mondays at 9p and on June 5 with half-hour “Box Office” results shows on Tuesdays at 8p. Filmmaker finalists will produce shorts each week from a variety of genres and have access to professional writers, actors and crew to help them, with one getting eliminated from the competition each week. In the end, the winning filmmaker will receive a $1 million DreamWorks development contract. The series is produced by Mark Burnett Productions, DreamWorks Television and Amblin Television with Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg as creators and executive producers.
 
TLC will premiere the second season of Honey We’re Killing the Kids! on April 9 at 9p. The series, with new host registered dietician and exercise physiologist, Felicia Stoler, will air on the network’s Monday parenting block between Little People, Big World at 8p and One Week to Save Your Marriage at 10p. Honey We’re Killing the Kids! focuses on the childhood obesity issue and Felicia will offer parents new meal and exercise plans over a 3-week period designed to change their child’s life.
 
DIY Network comes out swinging this spring as the home improvement series DIY to the Rescue is back for a seventh season starting April 8 at 9p. Hosts Karl Champley and Amy Devers start the new season by tackling dilapidated buildings in Tigertown – the Detroit Tigers’ training facility in Lakeland, FL.
 
NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution has sold Law & Order: Special Victims Units for national syndication in more than 97% of the U.S. for weekend airings starting this fall. Produced by Wolf Films in association with NBC Universal Television Studio and created by Dick Wolf, Law & Order: SVU has been sold to such station groups as Fox, Tribune, Hearst-Argyle, Gannett, Scripps, Allbritton plus others. In the top markets, SVU has been cleared on WWOR/New York, KCOP/Los Angeles, WPWR/Chicago, WPHL/Philadelphia, WCVB/Boston, WJLA/Washington, D.C., WXYZ/Detroit, KDFW/Dallas and WXIA/Atlanta.
 
Elsewhere at NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution, The Chris Matthews Show has been renewed for a sixth season in more than 95% of the U.S. for the 2007-2008 season. Stations reupping include WNBC/New York, KNBC/Los Angeles, WMAQ/Chicago, WCAU/Philadelphia, WRC/Washington, D.C., WCVB/Boston, WKYC/Cleveland and WCMH/Columbus. In addition, the show’s web site, TheChrisMatthewsShow.com will re-launch later this month with new components, a new look and daily political news.
 
Equity Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) has formed a new partnership with CBS Television Distribution where classic programs from CBS’ library will be provided to EBC’s Retro Television Network (RTN). The multi-year licensing agreement specifies CBS Television Distribution will be RTN’s primary programming provider for the next five years, with a minimum total of 55 hours of programming per week. RTN will be launched nationally on July 7, 2007 and will feature such as Perry Mason, Hawaii 5-O and Mission Impossible. Right now, RTN is made available to local affiliates on a barter basis.
 
Bunim-Murray Productions, the guys behind reality series Road Rules and The Simple Life among others, has established a documentary film division called BMP Films. The first project from BMP Films is Autism: The Musical, scheduled to appear at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival on April 29. Sasha Alpert, VP/Creative Affairs will head up the new unit.
 
Nielsen Monitor-Plus has released advertising spending figures for the full year 2006, which increased overall by +4.6% compared to 2005. Most media reported gains with the internet leading at +35%, followed by the top 100 Spot TV markets at +9.1%, then Spanish-Language TV at +8.1%. Network TV also saw an increase at +4.2%, while National Cable saw a modest +1.8% gain. Those posting decreases include Spot TV Markets 101-210 at -0.9% and Network Radio with a -2.4%.

FX is teaming with Steven Bochco and Joel Fields for a new and as yet untitled thriller project for the network.  This will be Bochco’s first project with the network since his series Over There.

Jane Curtain has joined the cast of ABC‘s comedy project Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office, from Imagine and 20th Century Fox TV.  In the role of the Nice Girl is Jayma Mays who is trying to make her way in the corporate world.  Curtain plays her feared yet respective and quite able-bodied Administrative Assistant.

Ricki Lake has her co-star in the ABC comedy project The Middle from Warner Bros. TV, about a large blue collar-lower middle class family.  Lex Medlin has been signed to play her husband.

The CW‘s new comedy project Dash 4 Cash from CBS Paramount Network TV about a racing reality show, has signed Kyle Bornheimer, Jonathan Chase and Rick Hall, all contestants in the reality show.

Miguel Penella has been advanced to CEO for the global media company Acorn Media Group, where he has been President of Acorn Direct for the last three years. Under Miguel’s supervision, Acorn Direct distributed more than 17 million catalogs in 2006 that contain British television favorites on DVD, specialty programming and other merchandise.
 
Scripps Networks has tapped Deanna Brown to be President/Interactive Group, the growing division within The E.W. Scripps Company which posted revenues of more than $1 billion last year. In this new position, Deanna offers more than 20 years of experience in media, entertainment and technology and was most recently GM of Yahoo! Media Group’s Lifestyles business unit. At Scripps, she will report direct to John Lansing, President, Scripps Networks.
 
The VH1 Save The Music Foundation, the non-profit organization that has donated $34 million in musical instruments to students across the country since its establishment in 1997, has named Dr. Sheila Johnson and Gordon Singer to its Board of Directors. Sheila co-founded BET and was EVP of the network until its sale in 2001. Currently, Gordon is a senior portfolio manager for Elliott Advisors LTD.
 
Linda Danna will soon join the Clear Channel Television-owned WOAI/San Antonio as Director/Sales. When her position goes into effect April 2, Linda will provide oversight to the advertising sales division for the television station, as well as woai.com and WeatherPlus.
 
Channel M has hired Anthony Petrillo as Senior Account Director. Based in the company’s New York office, Anthony joins Channel M from Lions Gate Films where he was VP/Theatrical Distribution.
 
Bravo has named Mari Katsunuma as VP/Digital to lead strategic development, content and operations for the network’s web and broadband properties that include BravoTV.com, BrilliantButCancelled.com, OUTzoneTV.com, getTrio.com and the newly acquired TelevisionWithoutPity.com.
 
Deborah Reichig, former SVP/Sales Strategy at Court TV, is the new SVP/Market Development at NBC Universal, where she will report to Beth Comstock, President/Integrated Media. Charged with a myriad of duties, Deborah will spearhead the development of company strategy and implementation of advertising and media effectiveness and will lead the company’s participation in unified industry efforts in these areas.
 
5W Public Relations has employed Cindy Rakowitz to the position of SVP/GM for the company’s Los Angeles office. For the last fifteen years, Cindy has headed the Public Relations and Marketing units at Playboy Enterprises.
 
Tribune Publishing, a division of Tribune Company, has appointed Timothy (Tim) Ryan as President/Publisher and CEO of The Baltimore Sun Company. Tim will follow Ronda Matthews in this position who is leaving for personal reasons.

SUNDAY – A18-49 Analysis: CBS completed the weekend with a third win Sunday night at 4.0/11 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS was in charge of the night: at 7p the overtime NCAA Basketball coverage and 60 Minutes won with 3.9/12 and during 8p 60 Minutes/Amazing Race at 3.9/10 ended up a tenth of a rating point higher than the repeat of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at 3.8/10. The 9p hour saw CBS still in the lead with a 3.9/9 for Amazing Race/Cold Case, bumping out a repeat of NBC’s Deal or No Deal at 3.6/9. Then at 10p, CBS with Cold Case/Without a Trace nudged even higher at 4.2/11 to win.
