Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 1, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies enter into a promotional deal for their new movie Rango with Zynga‘s social game FrontierVille.  A CGI animated movie, Rango stars Johnny Depp and opens wide this Friday, March 4, 2011.  Beginning this week FrontierVille players can take up three Rango-related tasks as they search for Rango, a chameleon, in the game’s wilderness and get their friends to send them ten water buckets, and view the movie trailer ahead of the movie’s release.  Players will receive a Rango statue to add to their homestead on FrontierVille as a reward for completing the mission.  The Rango integrated advertising promotion in and FrontierVille runs through March 6.  Prior to this, Zynga partnered with Sony Pictures’ The Green Hornet for a promotion within Mafia Wars, and DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind that had Megamind launch his own Mega-Farm within FarmVille.  In the 24-hour Megamind promotional period 9+ million people engaged with the Mega-Farm.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Paul Reubens (aka Pew-Wee Herman) stars in the new Pee-Wee Herman Show On Broadway special that premieres on HBO on Saturday, March 19, 10-11:30p.  The special is a recording of Pee-Wee Herman’s Broadway Show and was filmed at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in NY in January, following the show’s two-month run on Broadway.  The new special will air multiple times on HBO and HBO2.  Reubens first HBO Pee-Wee special, The Pee-Wee Herman Show aired in 1981.  Comedy director Marty Callner helmed both specials.  Reubens and writer/director/producer Judd Apatow are currently developing a new feature film based on the Pee-Wee Herman character.

Scholastic Media‘s animated WordGirl uses her vocabulary to help mark Read Across America Day on PBS Kids Go! (check local listings) tomorrow, Wednesday, March 2, 2011.  WordGirl airs Monday-Friday on PBS Kids Go!

Faith-based producer Big Idea Entertainment launches its new VeggieTales interactive website today at VeggieTales.com ( www.veggietales.com  ).  The new site features the VeggieTales characters, stories, video clips, activities, interactive books, e-cards, games, and lessons, as well as a resource section for parents, schools and churches.  Additionally, there is a link to access a new VeggieTales consumer products store.

iCarly: Season 2, Volume 3, a 3-disc DVD set including 15 episodes of Nickelodeon‘s iCarly and two hour-long iCarly TV movies, is set for release on April 5, 2011.  Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment, ICarly: Season 2, Volume 3 ($19.99) is distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.  Special features on the DVD include the pilot episode of T.U.F.F. Puppy, which features Jerry Trainor (iCarly) as Dudley Puppy, and two shorts, Meet Guppy and Best of Season 2.

BBC Worldwide partners with game developer Three Rings to create BBC Worldwide’s first free-to-play Doctor Who multiplayer online game, Doctor Who: Worlds in Time.  Players will be able to follow the good Doctor by traveling through time and space, exploring worlds and coming up against aliens (good and evil) and help save the universe.  Both BBC Worldwide and Three Rings will attend the Game Developers Conference next week in San Francisco.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Disney Consumer Products teams with Nordstrom to mark the 45th anniversary of Disneyland’s “it’s a small world‘ theme park attraction with a new line of kid’s apparel, accessories and footwear launching this week.  Based on Disney artist Mary Blair’s original artwork created for ‘it’s a small world,’ four seasonal collections for newborns, infants and toddlers will debut at Nordstrom ( www.nordstrom.com/smallworld) stores throughout 2001, with each collection representing a different country: Japanese Spring (February 2011); Indian Summer (June 2011); Scottish Fall (September 2011); and Russian Holiday (November 2011).  Each collection features items ($18-$169) from collaborators such as Petunia Pickle Bottom, TOMS Shoes, FEED, Trumpette, Baby Nay and Mighty Fine.  Nordstrom and Disney are also teaming with TOMS Shoes and FEED Projects to give back to communities around the world, with TOMS Shoes set to give a pair of new shoes to a child in need, while FEED Projects Small World items will benefit UNICEF, which was the ‘it’s a small world’ ride’s original 1964 beneficiary.  Additionally, with the release of each of the seasonal lines consumers can receive a limited-edition lithograph of Blair’s artwork with any purchase from the line (one per customer).

Paramount‘s campaign with online card company JibJab ( http://sendables.jibjab.com/) to promote Insurge Pictures flick Justin Bieber: Never Say Never was a user-generated content hit, resulting in 400+k personalized videos created.

Bazooka Candy Brands (Bazooka gum, Ring Pop lollipops) launches a new candy called Sweet Tweets this month. The new Sweet Tweets note cards with candy comes printed with an emoticon attached to a decorative paper board featuring illustrated designs, and each has room for a handwritten note ( www.sweettweetnotes.com ).  Sweet Tweets debuts with four flavors, Blue Raspberry, Watermelon, Lemonade, and Strawberry.  The Sweet Tweets launch will be supported with an online and social media promotional program including Twitter, Facebook, and various blogs.  The Facebook effort ( www.facebook.com/sweettweets) will include a Mail a Tweet to Your Sweet program that lets fans of the page mail handwritten messages to a friend.
