CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis
03/14/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 14, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
An un-casting note: Isaac Hayes has opted out of South Park where he was the voice of the character Chef. Hayes cites “inappropriate ridicule” of religion as his reason for leaving the show. Show creators Matt Stone was more specific, saying Hayes was upset that the show took a shot at the Church of Scientology, of which Hayes is a member. Stone offered this statement: “In ten years and over 150 episodes of South Park, Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslim, Mormons or Jews. He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show. … Of course we will release Isaac from his contract, and we wish him well.” Hayes offered his own statement which read in part, “There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry toward religious beliefs … begins.”
