Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 13, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Later today Disney will hold their 2012-13 upfront presentation for its Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior US channels, themed Into The Future, in NYC. In addition to a number of new original live-action and animated series and TV movies (many listed below), Disney Channel has announced the renewal of two of its newest series Austin & Ally and Jessie for second seasons, with Jessie also getting an original TV movie script order. This week also marks the launch of the newly redesigned DisneyChannel.com (www.disneychannel.com/beta). The new website, a collaboration between the Disney/ABC Television Group’s Digital Media team and the Disney Interactive Media Group, aims to be more intuitive for kids and tweens to find, share/comment (moderated) and interact with their favorite shows and content with “recommended,” “like,” and “Share” functions, among other things. The site will also offer a newsfeed and is set to be updated daily with all sorts of content, such as videos, games, polls, photos and shot-outs. Coming soon to the site will be a tween lifestyle section, featuring a range of social media tool, as well as information tips and trends in areas like style, technology and music, and further exclusive content. The site will also offer a streaming Radio Disney music component. New programming for the three networks, as well as some previously announced and returning programming, for the 2012/13 season, as well as the re-launched website includes:
Disney Channel
- Wander Over Yonder a new animated comedy that follows Wander, an optimistic intergalactic traveler who, along with his steed Sylvia, goes from planet to planet helping folks to live freely against the will of the evil Lord Hater and his army of Watchdogs. From creator/executive Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends), the voice cast for Wander Over Yonder includes Jack McBrayer (30 Rock, Phineas and Ferb”), Keith Ferguson (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends) and Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants). Wander Over Yonder is a production of Disney Television Animation.
- Teen Beach Musical a new original music-infused live-action TV movie, based on the 1960s teen beach party movies. The story follows McKenzie, a surfer gal, and her boyfriend, Brady, as they are transported into a classic surf movie musical and come up against a traditional bikers versus surfers faceoff, all while trying to figure out how to get home to current times. As the duo tries to blend in, while everyone around them breaks into song and dance, things go awry when they interfere with the plot of the beach movie and their fate may be forever altered. Slated to premiere in summer 2013, the cast stars Ross Lynch (Austin & Ally) and Maia Mitchell (Australia’s Trapped, Castaway), among others. A production of Rainforest Productions, Teen Beach Musical was written by Vince Marcello and Mark Landry (Zombie Prom) and Robert Horn (Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure) and is directed by Jeffrey Hornaday (Geek Charming, movie choreographer -A Chorus Line, Flashdance) and choreographed by Chris Scott (Lemonade Mouth). David Buelow (Bring It On: Fight to the Finish) is the executive producer and Robert F. Phillips (Teen Spirit) is the producer.
- Girl Vs. Monster (working title) a new Halloween themed TV movie to premiere during the network’s second annual month-long Monstober event. The movie stars Olivia Holt (Kickin’ It) as Skylar, a savvy teen who discovers her family’s closely-guarded secret they’re monster hunters. There is one immortal monster, Deimata, who wants to unravel her family’s secret. In order for Skylar and her friends to stop Deimata and her army of monsters, they’ll need to face their biggest fears and overcome them together. Featuring a script written by Annie DeYoung, Ron McGee and Geoff Rodkey, the movie is directed by Stuart Gillard and is executive produced by Sheri Singer.
- Code 9 this is an unscripted hidden camera/practical joke show aimed at kids and families. Kids work together with special effects artists and designers (think special prosthetic make-up and costumes) to pull off pranks on their unsuspecting mom and dad. Hosted by Wes Dening (In the Qube), the series is scheduled to premiere in summer 2012. A production of Evolution Media, Code 9 is executive produced by Mark Herwick (Launch My Line), Douglas Ross, Kathleen French, Gregory Stewart and Alex Baskin (each of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills).
- Let It Shine this new music-based original movie is set to premiere Friday, June 15 at 8p. A modern day Cyrano de Bergerac type story, Let It Shine is set in modern times and features hip-hop, rap and gospel music to help express being true to oneself. Starring are Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris), Coco Jones (Radio Disney N.B.T.), Trevor Jackson, Brandon Mychal Smith (So Random!), Nicole Sullivan, Courtney B. Vance and Dawnn Lewis, the movie was written by Eric Daniel and Don D. Scott and directed by Paul Hoen. The soundtrack will be released on Walt Disney Records.
- Gravity Falls is a new animated comedy (previously announced) set to premiere in June 2012. The series follows twin brother and sister, Dipper and Mable, who are reluctantly shipped off to spend the summer with their Great Uncle Stan in the strange town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. Created and helmed by Alex Hirsch (Fish Hooks), the voice cast features Jason Ritter (Parenthood) , Kristen Schaal (Flight of the Conchords, Toy Story 3), and Hirsch. The series is produced by Disney Television Animation.
- Make Your Mark this kid and tween talent competition returns for a second year and will extend across multiple Disney platforms. Things kick off on DisneyChannel.com in July 2012 with user-generated content, and will culminate with a special telecast in October 2012.
- Good Luck Charlie season three is set to debut in June 2012 with an hour-long special as the Duncan family prepare for the arrival of the new baby will it be a boy or a girl. 25 million votes for the new baby’s name were made by kids worldwide. Created by Phil Baker and Drew Vaupen and is executive-produced by Baker, Vaupen and Dan Staley, Good Luck Charlie is from It’s A Laugh Productions.
- Summer Adventure Weekend this July this on-air event will feature new, vacation adventure-themed episodes of every series on Disney Channel and Disney XD to be presented across three days including episodes of Gravity Falls, Fish Hooks, Jessie, A.N.T. Farm, Good Luck Charlie, Austin & Ally and Shake It Up will be presented on Disney Channel, and Disney XD will feature themed episodes of Kick Buttowski – Suburban Daredevil, Lab Rats, Kickin’ It, Pair of Kings and Mr. Young. Look for the summer Adventure Weekend to also include the first of a Phineas and Ferb two-part episode.
- Shake It Up: Made In Japan slated to air August 2012 – this 90-minute song and dance-filled event, follows best friends Rocky and CeCe as they travel to Tokyo to star in an interactive dance video game. While there doing their own things, they get involved in a race against time to save the world from The Rocky and CeCe computer virus. The Blue Man Group guest stars. The series is executive-produced by Rob Lotterstein and Jeff Strauss and is a production of It’s a Laugh Productions.

- Marvel Universe a new hour-long programming block premieres Sunday, April 1 featuring the new animated series Ultimate Spider-Man. The series is written/guided by an iconic comic book creative team including Marvel’s CCO, Joe Quesada, and Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, Supervising Producers/Writers Man of Action (Joe Kelly, Joe Casey, Steven T. Seagle & Duncan Rouleau), Creative Consultant/Writer Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series, Lost), and Consulting Producer/Writer Brian Michael Bendis (Marvel’s Ultimate Comics Spider-Man comic series). The story follows a teenage Peter Parker (voiced by Drake Bell) as he manages the challenges of high school with the extraordinary challenges of being a Super Hero. Nick Fury (voiced by Chi McBride) invites Parker to train with his S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, where Peter’s alter-ego, Spider-Man, will join forces with four other teenage Super Heroes — Nova, White Tiger, Power Man and Iron Fist – as they work to become ultimate superheroes. The block will also feature the second season of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and new short-form series that take viewers behind the scenes to meet the creative teams and explore the Marvel Universe. The block will air twice weekly.
- Motorcity an animated series (previously announced) set in a futuristic Detroit after it has been purchased and built into Detroit Deluxe by evil billionaire Abraham Kane, premieres Monday, April 30. Kane, who banned personal freedoms like cars, must contend with a group of hot-rod driving rebels The Burners led by Mike Chilton (17) that want to stop him. Motorcity is executive-produced and directed by producer Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse). Craig Lewis (Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends) is the story editor and John O’Bryan (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and George Krstic (Star Wars: Clone Wars) are the writers. The voice cast is Reid Scott, Nate Torrence, Kate Micucci, Kel Mitchell, Jess Harnell, Brian Doyle Murray, Jim Breuer and Mark Hamill. Motorcity is a production of Robin Red Breast and Disney Television Animation.
- Tron: Uprising the new mixed 3D and 2D animated series (previously announced) features a story that takes place between the two Tron feature films, and introduces Beck, who has been chosen to lead the mission to free his home, a computer world called The Grid, from the evil Clu and his henchman General Tesler. The executive producer/director is Charlie Bean (Robotboy, Samurai Jack and Powerpuff Girls) and the consulting producers are Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz (both screenwriters of TRON: Legacy/executive producers of ABC’s Lost and Once Upon a Time) and Justin Springer (co-producer of TRON: Legacy). The music is composed by Joseph Trapanese (TRON: Legacy). The voice cast features Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Nate Corddry, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reubens, Reginald VelJohnson and Bruce Boxleitner. The series is a production of Disney Television Animation.
- Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja (52×11) an action animated comedy (announced last week), set to premiere in fall 2012. The series follows the adventures of unlikely hero Randy Cunningham who, armed with his magic ninja suit, the teachings of an 800-year-old Ninja guide and the help of his buddy Howard, finds himself protecting his school and the world from certain destruction. The voice cast features Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation), Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Andrew Caldwell (Transformers). The creators/executive producers are Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (Scooby Doo). The series is a production of Ireland’s Boulder Media and LA-based Robin Red Breast, Inc. in Los Angeles.
- Disney XD has also acquired three series – Slugterra for fall 2012, Packages from Planet X for early 2013, and PacMan: The Adventure Begins for spring 2013.
Disney Junior the new 24-hour basic cable/satellite channel for preschoolers and their parents/caregivers is set to launch on Friday, March 23 at 12m in the US. There are 28 Disney Junior channel worldwide. Disney Channel will continue to air its daily Disney Junior programming block.
- Doc McStuffins This previously announced animated series features a six-year-old girl who communicates with and heals stuffed animals and toys in her backyard clinic, premieres Disney Junior channel and will also be seen on Disney Channel’s Disney Junior block. Through storytelling the series aims to underline the importance of taking care of oneself and others. The series’ theme song is performed by singer China Anne McClain (A.N.T. Farm, Hollywood Records recording artist). Doc McStuffins is created by writer/producer Chris Nee (Little Bill, Deadliest Catch: Crab Fishing in Alaska), who also serves as executive producer. Norton Virgien (Rugrats) is the director. Doc McStuffins is a production of Ireland-based Brown Bag Films.
- Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Bucky’s Great Race this primetime special episode will premiere in September 2012. The executive producer is Rob LaDuca and the producer/story editor is Mark Seidenberg. The director is Howy Parkins. The series is a production of Disney Television Animation.
- Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey and Donald Have A Farm In this special is slated to debut in fall 2012. The executive producer is Rob LaDuca and the producer/story editor is Mark Seidenberg. Donovan Cook is the director. The series is a production of Disney Television Animation.
- Sofia The First this new Disney little girl princess will debut in the animated TV movie, Sofia the First, premiering in fall 2012, and will be followed by a series premiering in winter 2013 on Disney Channel and Disney Junior channels around the world. The voice cast features Ariel Winter, Sara Ramirez, Wayne Brady and Tim Gunn. The series was developed by Craig Gerber (Pixie Hollow Games) who also wrote the movie. Jamie Mitchell (Special Agent Oso) serves as both executive producer and director on the series. Gerber is co-executive producer and serves as the story editor. The series and movie are productions of Disney Television Animation.
- The Happy Hugglemonsters based on the book series I’m a Happy Hugglewug by Niamh Sharkey, this animated series follows the adventures of five-year-old Henry Hugglemonster, the middle child in a family of fun-loving monsters. The series is directed by Norton Virgien (Rugrats, Doc McStuffins), the lead writer is Sascha Paladino (Wonder Pets, Ni-Hao Kai-Lan), and the producer is Gillian Higgins (Doc McStuffins, Octonauts). It is a production Ireland-based Brown Bag Films.
- Quiet Is… a stop-motion, short-form animated series featuring calm songs and serene visuals to help little kids unwind before bedtime. Quiet Is… was created by author/illustrator Sara Pinto and photographer/filmmaker Luciana Frigerio. The composers are Rick Garcia and William V. Malpede. The series is a production of Scotland-based animation studio Ko Lik Films.
DreamWorks Animation SKG inks a licensing deal with IndyCar, the sanctioning body for the IZOD INDYCAR Series and Firestone Indy Lights, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), to support its upcoming animated feature film Turbo. Slated for release on July 19, 2013, DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo is the story of an ordinary garden snail with an impossible dream: to win the Indy 500. When a freak accident gives him extraordinary speed, Turbo sets out to try to make his once impossible dream come true. Turbo’s star-studded voiceover cast includes Ryan Reynolds (as Turbo), Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzman, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson.
Shout! Factory (www.shoutfactory.com) and Saban Brands enter into a multi-year, multi-property home entertainment partnership, which will see Saban’s iconic live-action series, including Power Rangers, available to the home entertainment market in the US and Canada. Under the agreement, Shout! Factory holds the exclusive home entertainment packaged media (DVD/Blu-ray) and select digital rights to Saban Brands’ catalog of properties including 700+ episodes of Power Rangers (1993- 2009), 92 episodes of VR Troopers, 26 episodes of Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, and 88 episodes of Beetleborgs for home entertainment releases and digital distribution across select entertainment platforms in North America. Shout! Factory will begin rolling out Saban’s TV properties beginning this summer 2012, including individual program and complete series.
HIT Entertainment signs three new UK licensees for the popular preschool property Thomas & Friends. The new licensing partners include Ice Fresh (Thomas shaped ice-creams on a stick) and two personal care licensees – H&A (toiletries bath soap crayons, magic facecloth, fizzer set, and Thomas the Tank Engine bath buddy) and Dr. Fresh (oral hygiene toothpaste, toothbrushes, a first aid kit, toothbrush timer, bathroom tidy set). These new Thomas & Friends products will debut at available at retail debut in spring/summer 2012. To date, Thomas & Friends has 105+ UK licensees.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) appoints two new licensing agents in Russia. RIO Licensing will represent Care Bears for AGP and global licensing agent Cookie Jar, while Megalicense will represent Twisted Whiskers in the region. Both Megalicense and RIO Licensing will present their respective brands at the third annual Licensing@Russia licensing event in Moscow this week, focusing on the Russian and Eastern European markets.
Turner CN Enterprises (TCNE), a licensor and third party agent, unveils a number of new licensing deals for Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) across various categories ahead of the Licensing@Russia licensing event in Moscow this week. On both free TV and pay TV, as well as online, Bakugan continues air on Cartoon Network, with the premiere of the new season, Bakugan Mechtanium Surge, in CEE and Russia last month. TCNE announces the Mechtanium Surge toys will launch in August/September 2012. Also for Bakugan, KARTON P+P signs on for back-to-school products in the Czech Republic and Slovenia. TCNE has completed Ben 10 deals in the Czech Republic and Slovenia with EP Line SA (stationery), Ing. Jiri Soural – The Drinks (a line of carbonated soft drinks) and Cartoon Mania (Ben 10 branded apparel). Also signing a deal for the property in the Ukraine is Vivat Trading (stationery and paper goods). Acting as a third party agent for the girl-targeted Puppy in my Pocket, TCNE inks a deal with Tekma d.o.o. (gifts) for Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also in the girl arena, TCNE has signed new license deals for its collectible brand Zoobles with B&S Polska (back-to-school products) in Poland, while Egmont International Holding A/S picks up the publishing rights to Zoobles in CEE, Russia and CIS.
President Barack Obama will deliver a special message, as President and as a dad, at the beginning of Speak Up, Cartoon Network‘s original documentary that focuses on real every day stories of bullying and kids who spoke up and took a stand, which premieres this Sunday, March 18 at 5:30p (encore presentation at 8p). The commercial-free half-hour special is part of the network’s ongoing Stop Bullying: Speak Up campaign. Before, during and immediately following the telecast, noted bullying prevention expert and author Rosalind Wiseman will provide further explanation of key bullying issues for kids and adults, answering viewer questions online at StopBullyingSpeakUp.com (www.stopbullyingspeakup.com). Additionally, the entire Speak Up documentary will be posted the website for ongoing viewing by students, parents, educators and community leaders. Speak Up will also be available for viewing across multiple digital platforms for free to customers through Comcast Xfinity, Facebook, iTunes, and YouTube.com, each for at least two weeks following the premiere. Speak Up is directed by Lee Hoffman (Third Act Productions), executive produced by Hoffman and Cartoon Network Chief Content Officer Rob Sorcher, and produced by Rebecca Miller.
In other Cartoon Network programming news, the network will launch the much anticipated fourth season of the animated comedy Adventure Time on Monday, April 2, at 7:30p. Season four of Adventure Time will feature familiar characters and a new flame for Finn, and so much more OK I’ll tell you some more, Jake and Finn venture into the Nightosphere, Lumpy Space Princess writes a tell-all book and we get to see who would win in a fight between Finn and Jake. The new season also features special guest voiceovers by Donald Faison, George Takei, Erik Estrada, Andy Milonakis, Emo Phillips, Bobcat Goldthwait and Susie Essman. Additionally, CartoonNetwork.com (www.cartoonnetwork.com) will debut a new Adventure Time game for the new season, Jake’s Tough Break, on Monday, March 26, 2012. Adventure Time is produced by Cartoon Network Studios in association with Frederator Studios.
Kay Perry will perform live at Nickelodeon’s 2012 Kid’s Choice Awards on Saturday, March 31, at 8p, which is being held at USC’s Galen Center. Perry, topping the number of Kids’ Choice Award nominations by an individual this year, joins host Will Smith and the celebrity filled presenter lineup, including Chris Rock, Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, Zac Efron, Heidi Klum, Victoria Justice, Miranda Cosgrove, Big Time Rush, Chris Colfer and Cee Lo Green, as well as other performers, One Direction. Kids can cast their votes until March 31 in 20 total categories across all of Nickelodeon’s digital outlets, including Nick.com (www.nick.com), Nick Mobile app as well as Nickelodeon’s Facebook page and Twitter feed. Nickelodeon’s 25th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards is being produced by Nickelodeon Productions in association with Bob Bain Productions.
Netflix makes its Just for Kids streaming service that offers a selection of kid-targeted shows TV shows and movies available on Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) gaming console. Launched in August 2011, Netflix’s Just for Kids offers programming content aimed at kids 12 and younger. Just for Kids is designed to be easy for kids and families to browse and navigate via character-based selection, as well as displaying rows of titles organized by clear genres such as superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs and girl power, and featuring simple plot descriptions. In addition to PS3, Netflix Just for Kids is available on the PC and Mac, Nintendo Wii and Apple TV. Other devices including Xbox 360 and tablets are scheduled to follow this year.
International TV provider, Chello Zone, enters into a new deal with Israel’s cable platform HOT, marking the debut of a Russian-language version of preschool channel JimJam, as well as the launch of Outdoor Channel and Fine Living in the region. Under the deal, HOT will feature preschool programming in Russian on JimJam, which at launch will include episodes of Barney & Friends and Percy the Park Keeper. JimJam is available in 60+ territories and features preschool series such as Bob The Builder, Thomas & Friends, Angelina Ballerina and Fireman Sam. The largest platform in the territory, HOT has 880,000+ subscribers.
Paris-based producer/distributor Millimages signs a broadcast deal for its new animated preschool property Mouk (62×11) with KiKA (Germany), which will debut the series this year. Based on the Mouk book by Marc Boutavant and directed by Francois Narboux, Mouk was commissioned by France Televisions and Disney Channel UK. The series revolves around Mouk and his buddy Chavapa, two globetrotters who explore the world on their bicycles, taking viewers along for the ride, while sending news of their travels back to friends at home. Prior to this Disney acquired Mouk for its networks in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Benelux, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Millimages holds all international TV and licensing and merchandising rights to the property.
Canadian producer/distributor CCI Entertainment inks a deal with Disney Junior Latin America for the animated preschool series Joe and Jack (39×7). Produced by Ireland-based Dancing Girl Productions, Joe and Jack will be dubbed into both Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese for Disney Junior Latin America. The series revolves around the comedic adventures of a boy Joe, and his best friend Jack, who happens to be a cat. The daring duo turn the ordinary into the extraordinary by using their imaginations to make dreams come true and take on the daily preschool challenges, while also celebrate friendship.
