Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
World Events Productions (WEP), a producer of animated TV programming, and Classic Media unveil official plans to re-launch the classic Voltron brand, which turns 25 this year, including a new TV series and toy line. Classic Media will oversee distribution and worldwide licensing and merchandising for Voltron. The new TV series, Voltron Force, is slated to premiere on Nicktoons in 2011. Voltron Force is being produced by WEP and Classic Media with Kickstart Productions (Wanted, Wolverine and the X-Men). Mattel has signed on as the master toy licensee and is currently developing a new line of Voltron toys, which will appeal to both fans of the 1980s series and the new Voltron Force. WEP holds the rights to Voltron, Defender of the Universe and Voltron: The Third Dimension, among other properties.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Stanley Tucci will star as Dr. Abraham Erskine in Marvel Studios‘ live-action feature film Captain America: The First Avenger. Tucci will star opposite the previously announced cast members Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, and Hayley Atwell. Directed by Joe Johnston from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Captain America: The First Avenger will release in the US on July 22, 2011 and will be distributed by Paramount.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The Hub adds two more series to its programming lineup with the acquisition of the international live-action preschool series In the Night Garden and the animated K5-10 aimed program Dennis and Gnasher, each making their US premieres. Based on the classic nursery rhyme picture boo, In the Night Garden is produced by Ragdoll Productions for Ragdoll Worldwide, a joint venture of BBC worldwide and Ragdoll. Dennis and Gnasher, which follows the misadventures of Dennis and his dog/pal Gnasher, produced by Red Kit Entertainment and sticky Pictures Productions for Beano Productions. The Hub, a joint venture between Discovery Communications and Hasbro, will launch on October 10, 2010 and offering programming dayparts aimed at preschoolers (9a-1p), Kids 6-12 (1-6p), families (6-7p) and “family prime” (7-11p).
Disney XD orders up a second season of its animated series Kick Buttowski Suburban Daredevil from Disney Television Animation. The new episodes will rollout on the channel from spring 2011. Series creator Sandro Corsaro will serve as executive producer on the new season, with Chris Savino producing and directing.
PBS Kids (US) and CBC (Canada) have picked up a second season of the literacy based preschool series Super Why!, produced by Out of the Blue Enterprises, in conjunction with Decode Entertainment. The second season is comprised of 15 new episodes, bringing the total to 80×22. The series also airs on channels around the world. Decode Enterprises holds worldwide TV right to the series, excluding the US.
M4e AG inks a deal with Nickelodeon Germany for the free-TV rights for the German version of the animated feature movie Winx Club The Secret of the Lost Kingdom (1×90). The movie is currently slated to make its Germany TV in fall 2010 on Nickelodeon, which also airs the animated Winx Club TV series. Rainbow is currently producing a movie sequel that will release in Italy theaters in October 2010, and in Germany and Austria in early 2011 in 3D.
Zodiak Entertainment completes new deals for the 2D digital animated series Sally Bollywood (52×13) in Europe. Picking up the detective series in Spain are Cartoon Network/Telecinco and in Portugal by Aquarius. The series is currently broadcasting on Disney Germany, and will air from October 2011 on Super RTL (Germany), the latter also acquiring a license for German-speaking Europe. Further deals are currently underway for Sally Bollywood in the Netherlands and the Middle East. A Franco-Australian co-production of Tele Images Kids and Three’s a Company for France 3 and Network 7, and is distributed internationally by Zodiak Entertainment Distribution. Sally Bollywood is also available in a number of other countries.
Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release the new Angelina Ballerina: Love to Dance on DVD this August 31, 2010. Featuring the new CG animated series look, the DVD release follows Angelina on her first day at Camembert Academy discovering all sorts of music and dance genres, while making new friends. Bonus features on the title include the Angelina Says game, and two music videos.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Chorion will showcase the preschool property Olivia (52×11), based on Ian Falconer’s Olivia book series, at Licensing International Expo this week in Las Vegas. The first consumer products lines based on Olivia are slated to debut in the US beginning with back-to-school 2010, including toys from global master toy licensee Spin Master, as well as accessories, games, puzzles and novelty items, and the DVD Merry Christmas Olivia from Nickelodeon Home Video releasing on October 5, 2010. Internationally consumer products will rollout in 2011, beginning with TV tie-in books. Simon & Schuster will simultaneously release Olivia Claus, a TV tie-in holiday title, on October 5. Additionally, under Chorion’s newly completed publishing deal with Hachette Jeunesse, tie-in books will release in France this year and next. Olivia and the Babies, Olivia and Olivia, Dinner with Olivia and Olivia Opens a Lemonade Stand releasing in France this September, with Olivia Claus to follow in October. Finally, Bavaria Sonor is appointed as the licensing and merchandising agent for the property in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
CPLG Canada extends its home entertainment distribution pact with Vivendi Entertainment Canada. The new multi-year agreement will include Cookie Jar Entertainment‘s preschool TV series and franchise Caillou. The new season of Caillou, which will focus on healthy habits, is set to debut on Treehouse (Canada) this fall.
Scholastic Media (SM) inks new deals for the preschool property Clifford the Big Red Dog. New licensees signing on for Clifford-themed products include: Trevco (T-shirts for infants/toddlers/youth/juvenile); Starry Story (prints of original artwork framed and unframed prints and lithographs); and Kidz Toyz (electronic keyboard and other instruments); Healthy Chocolate (sugar-free chocolate mostly organic).
Chapman Entertainment enters into a new five-year master publishing licensee deal with Penguin Books for its preschool property Ray Rah The Noisy Lion. The deal grants Penguin the global English language rights (excluding the US and Canada) to publish books in all formats including electronic, picture storybooks, beginner books, sticker books, coloring books, activity books, novelty and audio books under its preschool-targeted Ladybird imprint.
In other Ladybird Books news, the Penguin imprint enters into a deal with LEGO Group to publish a new line of tie-in books in the UK. The deal gets underway this July with the release of the first two activity books based on the LEGO Atlantis theme brand, The Quest for the Lost City Book and The Menace From the Deep. The titles will feature puzzles, games and a collectible mini figure.
The LEGO Group and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) further their relationship with a new distribution deal for LEGO Universe, the new MMOG (massively-multiplayer online game) that is set to launch later this year. A family-targeted game, LEGO Universe is based on traditional LEGO play. WBIE will serve as the exclusive retail distributor of LEGO Universe outside of LEGO channels. Developed by LEGO Group and NetDevil, LEGO Universe is currently in closed beta and slated to release later this year.
STONE SOUP
Discovery veteran Bill Goodwyn is upped to President/Global Distribution and CEO/Discovery Education. He previously helmed Discovery’s US Distribution division and was President/Discovery Education. Goodwyn, who has been with Discovery for 23-years, is credited with building a strong content distribution platform and re-launching its Discovery Education division. In addition to his new role as President/Global distribution, Goodwyn will continue to lead all US distribution efforts.
Twentieth Century Fox unveils a restructuring of its licensing division including renaming the group as Fox Consumer Products and the creation of new executive positions charged with creating opportunities for Fox’s TV and feature film properties. The newly named division will continue to be led by EVP, Robert Marick, which plans to expand globally and build international sales. In new executive roles:
- Pam Kunick-Cohen is named SVP/Global Brand Management. She joins the group from HIT Entertainment, and she previously served as SVP/Fox Home Entertainment; Ricardo Crespo is appointed SVP/Global Creative. Most recently, Crespo was Worldwide Executive Group Creative Director for Mattel.
- The new Global Category Management team includes Gary Rosenfeld, SVP/New Media, who will continue overseeing Fox’s portfolio of video game projects and managing the division’s games development staff. Lora Cohn will serve as VP/Toys & Social Expressions and Virginia King, VP/Fashion & Home.
- New regional sales teams under the Fox Consumer Products banner: Kevin Sherwood is appointed VP/North America Sales. He joins the team from Fox Home Entertainment where for the last five years he was Executive Director/Retail Marketing; Bob Bacon is named VP/Asia Pacific & Latin America. Bacon previously worked with SEGA, Disney and Warner Brothers; Carl Lumbard will serve as SVP and MD/EMEA.
BBC Worldwide names two in its Licensed Consumer Products group. Carla Peyton is named SVP/Licensed Consumer Products, BBC Worldwide Americas, and Ian Wickham is appointed as Head of Retail Development/Licensed Consumer Products for UK, Ireland and EMEA. . Both will report directly to Tom Keefer, SVP/Global Licensed Consumer Products. Peyton, who will be based NYC, was most recently SVP/Licensing, Equity Management. Based in the UK, Wickham joins the team from The Copyright Promotions Licensing Group where he was Retail manager. Richard Hollis, Head of UK Licensing, will continues to oversee the UK Licensing team, with Wickham leading the UK and EMEA retail efforts along side Jackie Ferguson, Licensing Manager, EMEA. Keefer will continue to report to Neil Ross Russell, MD/Children’s Global Brands & Licensed Consumer Products. These appointments come on the heels of Bob Traub being named SVP/Retail Development Licensed Consumer Products for the Americas.
Miriam Farbey is named to the newly created position of Global Publisher/Nonfiction, Scholastic Trade Publishing division. She will oversee all kid’s nonfiction publishing in trade, for Scholastic’s domestic and international book distribution channels. Farbey, who will be based in the UK, will report to Ellie Berger, President/Trade Publishing, Scholastic. Most recently, Farbey served as Global Publisher, DK.
RATINGS
Nickelodeon‘s premiere of the new hour-long iCarly TV movie, iPsycho, on Friday, June 4, at 8p, was watched by 7.5 million Total Viewers 2+, making it basic cable’s top entertainment show for the second quarter to date. Additionally, iPsycho was up for the time period over last year with K2-11 4.1 million (+208%), K6-11 3.2 million (+320%), Tweens 9-14 2.8 million (+440%) and Total Viewers (+218%). The evening also featured new episodes of two other live-action series Victorious (9p), which drew a series record 5.9 million Total Viewers 2+, and Big Time Rush (9:30p), which earned 4.7 million Total Viewer 2+ the biggest audience for the demo since the series launched (January 18, 2010).
