Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06.04.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 4, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Digital ad revenues in the US hit $9.6 billion during the first quarter of 2013, according to the latest Internet Advertising Revenue Report from the IAB and PwC US. The Q1 2013 number is a 15.6% year-over-year increase from the $8.3 billion in revenue generated during Q1 2012. It’s also a new all-time high for quarterly online ad revenues. “Internet advertising revenue continues to exhibit double-digit growth, even as the business matures,” said Sherrill Mane, SVP/Research, Analytics & Measurement for the IAB. These Q1 numbers “reflect the type of growth that the internet advertising arena has been seeing year-over-year,” added David Silverman, Partner at PwC US.

CONTENT EVERYWHERE

Steve Carell is coming on board as Guest Editor of NBCUniversal’s iVillage and will be featured in content revolving around Father’s Day and parenting. Carell will also sit down for video interview in which he will discuss his family and approach to raising kids. The video interview will be featured across iVillage during the week.

New additions to the Acorn TV streaming lineup include: Midsomer Murders, Set 22 (four new feature-length mysteries); UK-based reality series Time Team; every season of The Forsyte Saga (starring Emmy-winner Damian Lewis from Homeland); a Doc Martin marathon (38 episodes plus two movies); and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries (17 feature-length mysteries).

Cynopsis Digital’s BIG Monetization Summit is now exactly two weeks away. Which means if you want to see speakers from places such as AOL, CAA, Crackle, Mediacom, Revision3, Yahoo, YouTube, Scripps, Starcom MediaVest Group, USA Network, The Weather Channel, and Vuguru, then you want to register before all of the seats get filled. It’s the only place to go on June 18 to hear intelligent people give intelligent advice. This is an undisputed fact.

The majority of mobile TV viewing happens inside the home, according to the results of a new study from Council for Research Excellence (CRE). In fact, as much as 82% of TV viewing on tablets and 64% of TV viewing on smartphones is happening inside the house. The study, which surveyed nearly 6,000 participants and documented more than 393,000 “TV viewing occasions,” also found that:

A new report from Ericsson projects mobile-data traffic to rise 12-fold by the end of 2018, driven mainly by increased video consumption. THE DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Fandor, an independent film site that offers a library of hard-to-find feature and short films (largely outside of the mainstream), has launched a new program called Journey Into Film. The program consists of eight curated playlists revolving around one common thread, ranging from “Love Letter to New York City” to “Fantastic Flights,” “This Sporting Life,” and “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs.” Each stream is compiled by a film critic and the Fandor staff and consists of a series of feature films and short scenes/films that span several genres and time periods, while still coming back to that one common idea. Interactive visuals and expert commentary provide further insight into the topic and film history. If you’re a film buff, I highly recommend checking it out (I’ve already begun the “Love Letter to New York City” program).
