Cynopsis: Kids!

06/03/08

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 3, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TV-Loonland and Canada’s CarpeDiem Film & TV begin production on the new tween-targeted, digital animated series My Life Me (52×11).  Backed by broadcasters Teletoon (Canada) and France 2 (France) and Canal J (France), TV-Loonland will handle international distribution rights across all media including licensing and merchandising.  The manga-stylized animated comedy revolves around four characters that are trying to make their way through those fun tween years.  My Life Me was co-created by JC Little, Cindy Filipenko and Svetlana Chmakova, best known for English-language manga series Dramacon (Tokyopop).  Simultaneously in production are a My Life Me website and, where fans can create their own manga using a tutorial, and 26 original shorts for use across multiple platforms (e.g. VOD, mobile phones etc.).  The series, website and shorts will be completed for fall 2009.

This week marks the launch of The Topps Company’s new online virtual sports trading card community, Topps Town, aimed at kids.  Topps Town will feature teams and stars from the NFL, NBA and MLB under special licensing pacts with Topps.  To unlock Topps Town, kids will need the Topps Town code cards that are available in one of every two packs of 2008 Topps Series 2 baseball cards.  Once they have the code cards and unlock the virtual community, kids can collect and trade cards as well as create their own avatars, play a range of sports games and earn Topps points, which can be spent in the Topps Town Pro-Shop to acquire items to personalize their own clubhouse.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon premieres its new primetime special iCarly Saves TV this Friday, June 13 at 8p.  The special finds the stars of the iCarly online show with a chance to bring the program to TV, until the network starts meddling and, well, things go astray.  The special, which features guest stars Leon Thomas (August Rush) and Rachel Fox (Desperate Housewives), caps off a 4-hour iCarly marathon (4-8p) hosted by the show’s stars.  A mini-site for the special, www.nick.com/icarlysavestv, will offer a sneak peek of the episode, behind the scenes footage as well as a special game and message boards.  Additionally, the mini-site will offer music videos from the new iCarly album (releases June 10/Columbia Records), streaming tracks from the album and a Karaoke activity that allows fans to sing along and record their own version of the Leave It All to Me track, and rate versions submitted by other kids.

PBS Kids Sprout will premiere Pajanimals, a new short-form, live-action music series featuring cuddly puppets designed/built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, this November 2008 during its night programming block, The Good Night Show.  Commissioned by Sprout, Pajanimals is produced by The Jim Henson Company and 4Kids Entertainment, the latter that serves as the licensing agent for the property.  Pajanimals stars four animal puppets, created by artist Jeff Muncy (Pet Alien), which share bedtime-themed songs that revolve around typical young kid night time issues, like sleeping through the night and not being afraid of the dark.  The series and songs are developed with consultation from pediatric sleep specialists/family therapists, who will offer sleep advice to parents in 5×10 segments available on Sprout On Demand.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) and Chorion ink a global licensing partnership for The Mr. Men Show, under which SPHE will release all 52-episodes of the animated TV series on DVD.  Other recent Mr. Men licensing pacts include those with Fisher Price, Unilever, Virgin Atlantic, Quantas, Zara, Jakks Pacific, American Greetings, Penguin Publishing, Nestle and Sony Creative Products.  Based on the classic book series, The Mr. Men Show is produced by Chorion and animated by Renegade Animation and currently airs on Cartoon Network (US), Five’s Milkshake! block (UK) and on France 5 (France).

Aardman inks several new licensing partners for its new stop-motion preschool series Timmy, including name Vivid Imaginations as Master Toy partner, with Egmont named as the master publishing rights holder for UK and Commonwealth, and in a separate deal, Titan Magazines will publish a monthly comic for the UK and Ireland.  Currently in production, Timmy (59×10) is scheduled for air in 2009 with pre-sales including to Disney Channels Worldwide including the US and CBeebies (UK).  Aardman also plans to launch a Timmy product line from fall 2009.  Aardman will feature Timmy at the Licensing Show next week seeking other category partners for the UK, as well looking to appoint international agents.

Nelvana Enterprises attends 2008 Licensing International Expo in NYC next week where it will showcase its newer CGI-animated property, Z-Squad along with other shows such as Max & Ruby and Grossology (26 new episodes are currently in production).  Produced by Enemes, Z-Squad is aimed At Girls 8-12 and follows the adventures of three ordinary schoolgirls turned superheroes and their cute alien pals.  Nelvana is seeking licensing partners in categories including: apparel collections; fashion accessories, bags, stationery, mobile content, room decor, home furnishings, publishing, home video and interactive.

Nickelodeon kicks off its Slime Across America, as the 18-wheel Slime Mobile makes the first of its 10-city tour stops at Chicago’s Navy Pier this Saturday, June 7.  This year’s tour features the Nick Live! Slime Edition stage show that will include musical performances by Sony BMG artists Tiffany Evans and Menudo.  In addition to a stage show, the tour features the iCarly “scene pod” and The Naked Brothers Band “Karaoke pod,” where kids can act out a scene or perform a song from the respective shows.  Meanwhile, kids can also participate online with new games and an online slime destination at www.nick.com/slime , which launches this week and includes a 3D multi-player game titled Nicktoons SlimeBall, slime e-cards, and virtual slimings among other activities.
