Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06/29/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 29, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.

Putting more legislative authority behind the some of the FCC’s National Broadband Plan goals, President Obama signed a memo on Monday to the heads of federal agencies to auction off an additional 500 MHz of federal and commercial spectrum, to free up much-needed space for wireless broadband needs. One of the FCC’s key mandates is to free up more capacity for the transmission of video and other data to smartphones, netbooks and other mobile devices, but the agency is clearly still going to need the private sector (including TV broadcasters) to add to the total. The proliferation of such devices will increase the mobile bandwidth usage by 45 times in the next five years, according to resent Bernstein Research report. The federal auction would nearly double the 547 MHz currently devoted to wireless communications.

is back flogging Big Brother on multiple platforms this summer with an expanded presence on broadcast, online, mobile and cable TV (via a late-night version of the show on Showtime.)

  • The show will broadcast 3 nights each week: Sun., Wed., and Thur., the weekly Live eviction show hosted by Julie Chen
  • CBS Audience Network will incorporate clips, wikis and interactive widgets on their sites
  • Real Networks returns offering streaming live video from within the house (free to SuperPass subscribers)

Demand-side online advertising platform LucidMedia announced it will integrate a base of data from three exchanges into its contextual targeting platform. Data from behavioral targeting start-up AlmondNet, data auction marketplace provider BlueKai and targeting data marketplace purveyor eXelate will all be integrated into Lucid’s platform to enable advertisers to more accurately target audiences in real-time.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against two parties claiming a business method patent on Monday to patent an algorithmic method for hedging energy costs against inclement weather. The decision, penned by Justice Anthony Kennedy, leaves questions about whether or not future computer software patents involving algorithms that measure natural laws are patentable.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Consumption of entertainment-themed content is increasingly dramatically online – particularly among the hard-to-reach 18-24 demo – and snackable lengths are preferred, according to the new Magid Media Futures 2010 study commissioned by video sharing site Metacafe. Short, professional videos accounted for 8 out of the 10 most popular video genres, including music videos, movie previews, clips of TV shows, sports and comedy. Consumers overwhelmingly said watching short, professional videos online is just as entertaining as watching full-length TV shows on television (25% said they were even more entertaining.) In-stream ads are also more tolerated with 55% now reporting them as acceptable, up 3 points from 2009. Other findings included:

  • 75% of respondents watch some type of short professionally produced videos online regularly, with the highest percentage among 18 to 34 year-olds
  • 50% of internet users now watch online video weekly or more, up from 43% in 2009
  • 85% of males and 68% of females 18-24 watching online video weekly (up 15% and 27% over 2009 respectively)
  • Time spent watching online video is expected to grow by 5% over the next 12 months

More on the controversy over what sporting event had the bigger digital audience this year: ESPN defended its position naming last week’s U.S. World Cup match over Algeria as the most widely viewed sporting event to date by citing the event’s average audience per minute. (The metric is determined by dividing the total minutes viewed by the overall audience.) The match was seen by an average of 328k viewers per minute, according to Dave Coletti, Sr. Director of Research for ESPN, some 100k better than the CBS MMOD game. (The point being that although the CBS March Madness first-round game between Florida and BYU eked out slightly more overall uniques, more were watching the soccer game on ESPN3.com at any given time.)

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Recognizing the desire eBook users have to view video, Amazon introduced a way to experience multimedia versions of Kindle editions for iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch Kindle app users. (The Kindle itself utilizes the monochrome E Ink technology that does not support video.) The editions (priced at $9.99) include narrations, video interviews and walkthroughs of featured places. A handful of editions, including several Rick Steves travel books, Together We Cannot Fail by Terry Golway and William Styron’s literary classic Lie Down in Darkness.

Comcast’s Versus network launched a free “Tour Tracker” iPhone app featuring video highlights, daily race results, standings and racer profiles from the Tour de France. A $14.99 premium version is also available featuring live 3G or WiFi streaming of the race without commercials. (The day’s race is also available on demand upon conclusion of each leg.) It also features a cool GPS tracking feature identifying where each rider is on the course.

Apple
announced that it sold over 1.7 million iPhone 4 units through Saturday, June 26, following its launch on June 24.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Live streaming has already proven to be a popular tool on Facebook, with developers such as Ustream taking advantage of the social network’s “Live Stream Box” features. (Ustream’s latest product is its Live Mobilizer iPhone app, which allows bands to stream their shows or chats live and syndicate them out to social networks.) But until now, these solutions are server-based, meaning the bigger the audience, the bigger the cost. Bay area start-up Dyyno has come up with a live Facebook video streaming system that relies on a hybrid server/P2P architecture, built to (affordably) adapt to the massive scale of the Facebook platform. Dyyno sees its live steaming app, launching in beta today, as a perfect solution for politicians, small businesses and broadcasters alike to broadcast video to communities of users cobbled together on Facebook. Because the video is never stored before being sent out over the internet, it can handle sudden spikes in demand that occur when thousands of users begin to “Like” or “Share” something instantaneously across the world, according to Raj Jaswa, CEO & President of Dyyno. The company’s business model includes custom advertising options and full analytics packages.
