Cynopsis: Kids!
06/28/11
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 28, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
A win for video game companies and video game retailers. The US Supreme Court officially ruled yesterday to overturn a California law banning the sale and/or rental of violent video games to minors. The Supreme Court ruling, in a 7-2 vote, agrees with a federal court decision handed down by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Sacramento that found the law violates the First Amendment rights of minors. The law, which was never put into enacted, was adopted back in 2005 and would have fined retailers up to $1,000 for selling/renting a violent video game to a minor. California is one of a number of US states that adopted such violent video game retail laws, all of which have now been overturned in court. Justice Anton Scalia delivered the Supreme Court majority opinion in this case, which can be found at www.supremecourt.gov .
Nickelodeon Latin America welcomes Venezuelan actors Maria Gabriela de Faria and Willy Martin (Isa TKM, Isa TK+) to the cast of its telenovela, Grachi. The second season of Grachi is set to begin production in Miami next month. The new season again features Grachi (Isabella Castillo), Daniel (Andres Mercado) and Matilda (Kimberly Dos Ramos), among others, in a new story and introduces Mia (Maria Gabriela de Faria), the new witch in town and Leo (Willy Martin), the intelligent and creative guy that uses science to create his own kind of magic. The telenovela revolves around Grachi, a fun-loving and confident, but distracted, teen, who must learn to use her magical powers. Grachi’s second season will also feature several other new characters, yet to be announced, along with the original cast.
BBC Learning announces its second co-commission with CBeebies for a new TV series, The Lingo Show (52×10). Originally an online preschool-aimed game show, The Lingo Show debuted in February 2011 and also featured activities, audio clips, and songs. Like the online experience, the new The Lingo Show TV series will focus on teaching kids words in different languages and experience the sights and sounds of other countries and cultures. Each episode, which will feature Lingo and his multi-talented group of bugs, will focus on one language and teaching 10 words in that language.

The Newborn Channel, which is owned by The Wellness Network, launches Safe Sleep for Babies, a new crib safety video created by the US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) along with Keeping Babies Safe (KBS) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that will be available via its network of 1,000+ hospitals nationwide. Narrated by Joan Lunden, Safe Sleep for Babies was designed to further educate expecting parents about crib safety and reinforce the new federal requirements that go into effect today.
PBS and WGBH, and their producing partners WNET and KET, along with 31 other PBS member stations, have officially launched PBS LearningMedia ( www.pbslearningmedia.org), a free online digital media platform service for teachers, students and families nationwide. Designed to promote in-class (including for home-schoolers) innovation and engagement, the PBS LearningMedia features a public media library including PBS programming, and content contributed by other publicly funded groups, such as the National Archives, the Library of Congress and NPR, as well as content funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Education. The digital library is aligned to Common Core State Standards and available to all preK-16 classrooms. So, what can teacher, parents and students find online? As of this week they can have access for lessons and homework to 14,000+ research-based instructional resources, including videos, interactive elements, images, audio files, mobile apps, lesson plans, and worksheets. This fall, PBS LearningMedia will also be available as a custom solution, developed and distributed in partnership with state education departments or local school districts for integration into existing services. Texas PBS is the first to offer a custom integration service, providing the full collection of PBS LearningMedia via the “Project Share” service, a collaboration with the New York Times and Epsilen, to all Texas educators this summer.
