The Hulu contest is heating up by this Friday, to be exact, which is when binding bids are due. Jointly owned by the Walt Disney Company, NBCUniversal, and News Corporation, Hulu’s steady stream of suitors now include Time Warner Cable, Yahoo!, DirecTV, two private equity firms — Guggenheim Digital Media and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and the Chernin Group, an investment firm owned by former News Corporation president Peter Chernin. The brand is expected to fetch around $1 billion.

The Wimbledon YouTube channel debuted in 2006, but this is the first year that it will live stream the world’s most famous tennis tournament. During the two-week event, which started yesterday, the channel will stream key moments of the tennis, interviews, behind the scenes and press conferences, thanks to a sponsorship from Rolex.
In other words: This puts YouTube in direct competition with broadcast television showing the same event.
Amazon‘s European streaming-video service LoveFilm has signed a multiyear licensing deal with CBS Studios International, which will give consumers in the United Kingdom and Germany streaming access to shows that originally aired on CBS and Showtime in the United States. In addition, those consumers will be able to stream all of the episodes of the original Star Trek television series as well as Star Trek Voyager. Amazon’s goal? To live long and prosper!
The Wall Street Journal is launching WSJ Startup of the Year,” its largest effort into original programming to date on its online video platform, WSJ Live. The Journal currently claims between 20 million and 25 million streams a month and is clearly hoping for even more with this video series, which features business leaders coaching 24 startup CEOs, each of whom is hoping to be named “Start Up of the Year.” The winner will be announced in November.
Six-year-old digital publishing and production house REV New Media has re-launched its three premium web properties Hollywood gossip show Hollyscoop, fashion and beauty lifestyle show ModaMob, and music-world show Stereotude and is adding a fourth, sports humor show The Fumble. The shows will be based out of the company’s new Hollywood production studio, from which REV will also produce other original video content for distribution through such partners as AOL On, NDN, YouTube, and DailyMotion.
MGM is making its move in the world’s most populous country. MGM Television announced Monday that it had struck a multiyear licensing deal with Jiaflix Enterprises that will allow its new releases to be available on demand in China as well as 200 classic library films on the state-run Chinese streaming movie website m1905.com. Paramount signed on with the site last summer.
Hudson’s Bay Co. has gotten into the digital entertainment business with the launch of a new web series, Project Adventure. Set to launch July 1 on the Canadian department store’s blog, B Insider, the show will follow four 20 something guys as they adventure across the country in a large RV, go through Olympic training with Canadian athletes, and get involved in a slew of outdoor sports, such a bison safari tour and snorkeling with Beluga whales all while using and wearing Hudson Bay gear, of course.

Digital video ads appear to be trumping television advertisements when it comes to awareness and engagement goals, according to a new survey from AOL Networks. The ability to target specific types of consumers is the main reason for this, the study concludes, and marketers will put even more resources behind digital video ads as targeting technology becomes more sophisticated. Some of the more eye-opening results are:
* Nearly three quarters of marketing professionals around the globe are planning to up the amount spent on branded video content or video ads in the next year.
* 58% of marketers thought digital video ads performed better than TV ads to achieve engagement goals.
* 47% of respondents believe that digital video ads drives awareness better than TV ads.
* 25% of consumers reported a positive attitude toward ads in original streaming content versus 22% for ads in TV programming.
Less than 2% of tweets include location data, but Topsy isn’t let that stop it from figuring out how to use Twitter to identify local trends within the more than 400 million tweets sent daily. The company’s new geo-inference model aims to help marketers do just that. For now, Topsy has around a 95% success rate identifying what countries tweets originate from. As the location becomes more and more local, though, Topsy’s success rate drops: For states, it has a 50% success rate; for counties, 30%; and 25% for towns.
Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe is getting into mobile gaming. She has partnered with social gaming company Crowdstar to launch a mobile fashion game, Covet Fashion, that allows consumers to compete against one another in fashion face-offs as well as purchase the outfits they dress their digital avatars with. Launching in early July, the game’s will use real-world brands and link to companies’ e-commerce sites. It will initially only be available on Apple’s iOS platform and will include more than 60 designer and contemporary brands, including Rebecca Minkoff, Cynthia Rowley, Hudson Jeans, Yigal Azrouel, Joie, and Halston Heritage.
Gary Stevenson has been named the president and managing director of MLS Business Ventures: One of his main duties will be to find a way for Major League Soccer to create better television and digital content. He was previously the president of Pac-12 Enterprises, where he launched the Pac-12 Networks. Stevenson has also been an exec with the NBA and PGA Tour.

At Cannes Lions this past weekend, Microsoft announced a new ad format for its Windows 8 platform, Ad Pano, that contains a series of 15 still images designed to stimulate a stop-motion video, Clickz.com reports. The goal is to give advertisers the option to provide a more interactive and immersive experience similar to a magazine fold-out. To showcase Ad Pano’s possibilities, Microsoft showed off five new ads from All Saints clothing, Mercedes Benz USA, Vans Shoes, Dell, and MasterCard. Digital marketers’ constant quest to find new ways to immerse consumers in their brands is a personal fascination of ours, and we think this is a very cool way to get a brand’s name literally into the hands of buyers.
