The CW Network introduces four new series and its several renewed series as part of its fall 2011-2012 season beginning mid-September:
- September 13: 90210 at 8p; Ringer (series premiere) at 9p
- September 14: H8R (series premiere) at 8p; America’s Next Top Model at 9p
- September 15: The Vampire Diaries at 8p; The Secret Circle (series premiere) at 9p
- September 23: Nikita at 8p; Supernatural at 9p
- September 26: Gossip Girl at 8p; Hart of Dixie at 9p
Following the sudden death of Ryan Dunn (MTV’s Jackass) in a car accident early Monday morning outside Philadelphia, G4 decided to take its series Proving Ground, co-hosted by Dunn, off its schedule. G4 said the show is removed from its lineup until discussions about the show’s future can happen. Dunn was 34 years old and news about his accident and death broke yesterday morning on the Philadelphia radio talk show, The Preston and Steve Show on WMMR.
July clips along with a bevy of new and returning cable network series premieres:
- Death-defying videos are highlighted in National Geographic Channel’s new series The Indestructibles launching July 10 with back-to-back 30m episodes at 10p. The series examines ten real-life catastrophic events where people have miraculously survived and the show will deconstruct the footage to reveal scientific principles behind each incident. Some of the dangerous incidents investigated include a skydiver who fall three miles, a helicopter broken in half above a city, an SUV that rolls over a pedestrian and more. The series is produced by Story House Productions.
- Survivalist Bear Grylls is joined by actor Jake Gyllenhaal in the first of six new episodes of Man vs. Wild bowing July 11 at 9p on Discovery Channel. In the opening episode Bear and Jake take on the mountains of Iceland to Europe’s most active volcanoes. In other new episodes, Bear ventures into the remote parts of Iceland during a blizzard, New Zealand’s South and North Islands and the Utah badlands. The run of episodes will additionally include a special compilation episode of never before seen challenges and behind the scenes footage. The series is produced for Discovery Channel by Diverse Productions.
- Roseanne Barr stars in a new docu-series, Roseanne’s Nuts on Lifetime about her present life away from the frenzy of Hollywood living in Hawaii where she operates a 40-acre macadamia and live stock farm. Roseanne’s Nuts premieres July 13 at 9p with piggy-backed episodes. During a total of 16 half-hour episodes, Roseanne, her longtime writer/musician boyfriend Johnny Argent and son Jake lead an adventurous new life that is a world away from the entertainment business and Los Angeles. Roseanne’s Nuts is produced by 3 Ball Productions/Eyeworks USA.
- Wealthy mothers and daughters of the Lone Star state are the focus of The Style Network’s new docu-series Big Rich Texas opening July 17 at 9p. The series with ten one-hour episodes profiles five mother-daughter pairs who move and shake through Dallas’ high society. Big Rich Texas is from Fly On The Wall Entertainment.
- Reality series Storage Wars is back on A&E Network for a second turn starting July 20 at 10p with stacked premiere episodes. The series follows teams of bidders in Southern California as they place bids at storage auctions looking for undiscovered treasure. Storage Wars is produced by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company for A&E.
- Home improvement channel, DIY Network debuts its new series, Hollywood Hi-Tech showcasing high-end custom installation of home electronics equipment in celebrity homes on July 20 at 930p. The weekly half-hour series is hosted by lifestyle/technology expert Janna Robinson who visits A-list celebrities installing state-of-the-art gear and transforming their spaces. Celebrities featured in the series who will actually work with Robinson on their personal installations include Oliver Stone, Kevin Collolly, Nancy O’Dell and Patrick Warburton.
Staying on top of the auction genre, Spike TV renewed its non-scripted original series Auction Hunters for a third season consisting of 26 episodes. The series shadows Allen Haff and Ton Jones as they travel the country seeking hidden treasures in storage units. For season three, the duo hits new areas of the US as they travel to Anchorage, Washington, D.C., New York City, New Jersey, Hawaii, Denver and Los Angeles. The upcoming third season will also include one live episode slated to air in early 2012 watching as Allen and Ton reveal the contents of a storage pod. Details on the live episode will come later. Auction Hunters is produced by Gurney Productions.
MTV handed its daytime series Made a 12th series renewal with 20 episodes, reports THR. Made follows teens who strive to transform their life in a specific direction.
Coinciding with the debut of ABC’s new summer reality/adventure series, Expedition Impossible the network is constructing a sand dune in New York’s Times Square Military Island along with various physical challenges this Thursday. The temporary sand dune and its physical challenges will be available for anyone to try from 6a to 6p on Thursday and the Expedition Impossible premieres that night at 9p.
Sunday’s two-hour series premiere of TNT’s Falling Skies, starring Noah Wyle, brought in more than 5.9 million viewers as well as 2.6 million A18-49 and 3.2 million among A25-54. Falling Skies’ delivery of 5.9 million viewers now ranks as cable’s #1 new series launch so far this year. Beginning this Sunday, Falling Skies moves to its regular time period of 10p following the season debut of Leverage.
Season three debut of Drop Dead Diva on Lifetime Sunday at 9p, became the series’ most-watched season premiere among several demos including A25-54 at more than 1.5 million viewers; with A18-49 at 1.3 million viewers; W25-54 at 1.2 million; and among W18-49 at 998,000 viewers. The season premiere of Drop Dead Diva also averaged nearly 2.9 million total viewers.
AMC aired the first season conclusion of The Killing Sunday night at 10p drawing 2.3 million total viewers and almost 1.1 million A25-54 viewers. The Killing during its first season was the second largest inaugural season in AMC’s history, ranking after The Walking Dead.
Last Wednesday, TLC aired the frosh season finale of Extreme Couponing at 930p attracting 2.1 million total viewers. Afterwards at 10p, TLC’s season opener of Toddlers & Tiaras at 10p delivered 1.9 million total viewers. Toddlers & Tiaras air on TLC Wednesdays at 10p.
Univision‘s debut of reality series Pequenos Gigantes (Little Giants) reached 7.6 million viewers who tuned in for some or all of the two-hour premiere on Sunday night from 9-11p. According to Nielsen numbers, the program earned 4.2 million total viewers, 2.2 million A18-49 and 558,000 Kids 2-11. The show featured 28 children in a talent competition to find the most-gifted child entertainers.
Bounce TV, a broadcast television network designed for African-Americans and launching this fall, selected Marathon Ventures, owned by David Brenner and ACE Media Corp., established by Andrea Holmes Thompkins to manage advertising and sponsorship functions for the network. Marathon Ventures specializes in full-service direct response advertising sales representation while New York-based ACE Media Corp. is a certified, female minority-owned women’s business and a multicultural ad sales rep firm.
Asian-targeted English-language US network Mnet picked up the television series, Culture Japan headlined by Danny Choo debuting on the network July 5 at 930p. The weekly series, led by host Choo, explores three different Japanese pop culture stories during each episode.
Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) made two recent affiliation deals:
- One with Koplar Communications for its KRBK-TV in Springfield, MO where a new FOX affiliate will launch September 1. KRBK-TV is presently a MyNetworkTV affiliate and after the switch will broadcast both FOX and MyNetworkTV programming though promoted as FOX 49. KRBK-TV will continue operating out of its current offices in Springfield.
- A second agreement with Granite Broadcasting Corporation (Granite) owner of WISE-TV to launch a new FOX affiliate in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on August 1. The Ft. Wayne station will be known as WISE-TV/DT and currently is a MyNetworkTV affiliate. After its switch, the station will broadcast both FOX and MyNetworkTV programming and will be promoted as MY FOX FT. WAYNE. The station will continue to operate out of its current facility in Ft. Wayne.
MyNetworkTV picked up a new affiliate with WSBK-TV in Boston, owned by CBS Television Stations group. WSBK-TV begins airing MyNetworkTV programming this fall.
Just weeks before his FX series Rescue Me premieres its final seventh season (July 13), Denis Leary is working with USA Network to develop and co-write a half-hour comedy pilot, Sirens. The project will be an adaptation of a British series about the funny incidents and dramatic conflicts encountered by a trio of young paramedics. Bob Fisher will also co-write Sirens and both he and Leary will executive produce the series with Jim Serpico (Rescue Me) along with Hal Vogel and David Aukin of Daybreak Pictures. Leary’s and Serpico’s production company Apostle and Fox Television Studios will produce Sirens in association with Daybreak Pictures.
Lucy Punch landed the female lead in FX’s superhero pilot Powers starring Charles S. Dutton . Powers is a police procedural based on the comic book by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming about a world where superpowers are real and the police department has a special Powers unit with detectives investigating crimes involving people with superhero abilities. Punch will play Deena Pilgrim, a rookie detective and partner to Christian Walker (not yet cast) as they investigate the murder of Retro Girl. Sony Pictures Television and Circle of Confusion are producing the pilot. Dutton was cast as Captain Cross, the leader of the homicide department.
Casting Call: Mnet, a television network aiming at fans of Asian pop culture, is hosting a first-time audition in New York City this Saturday for the third season of the Korean singing competition series Superstark K. Solo artists and groups are invited to try out for this television series that has become the most-watched cable show in Korean history as well as by audiences throughout Asia. The audition is open to anyone regardless of age, race or music genre. Contestants who pass the final round of the New York audition will receive a round-trip airline ticket to Superweek in Seoul, Korea. Saturday’s audition will at The Times Center starting at 10a. Friday A18-49 Analysis: NBC won by a slim lead Friday night at 1.3/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. Univision’s Teresa hit #1 at 8p with a 1.2/5 followed closely by ABC’s repeat Shark Tank episode at 1.1/4. Univision remained in first place through 9p with Triunfo del Amor at 1.4/5 and NBC’s Dateline was next at 1.2/5. Ratings for the second hour of NBC’s Dateline at 10p moved well ahead of the pack to a 1.9/7 and Univision dropped to second place with La Rosa de Guadalupe at 1.1/4.

FOX News Channel tapped CNN’s Ed Henry as its new Chief White House Correspondent. At CNN, Ed also served as Chief White House Correspondent. Ed departs CNN at the end of this week.
Tribune Company reorganized two of its major business units falling under Tribune Media Services (TMS). The company’s Entertainment Products division will now function as a stand-alone business and be under Tribune Company’s roster of digital and other non-traditional media assets. Furthermore, the company News & Features division will be managed by Walter Mahoney, currently serving as SVP/McClatchy-Tribune Information Services. Walter will report to Tony Hunter, President/CEO, Chicago Tribune Media Group. Jay Fehnel will remain as SVP/COO in charge of the Entertainment Products unit, reporting to Dan Kazan, SVP/Investments at Tribune Company. David Williams, President/CEO of TMS is also exiting the company. David will be a consultant to TMS throughout the restructuring process.
