Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 1, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

MTVNHD, MTV Networks International‘s (MTVNI) two-year-old international HD channel focusing on music and kids, is set to launch in Malta today on quad play telecom operator, Melita Plc.  Additionally, the channel expands to Switzerland via the UPC affiliate Cablecom, and Poland on cable operator Vectra, growing the channel’s current distribution of the HD channel to 7+ million viewers worldwide in 28 countries.  The weekend Nickelodeon block features kids/family-targeted live-action and animated programming including iCarly, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Fanboy & Chum Chum.  This year MTVNI plans to continue rolling out the service to other new territories such as Austria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Italy, Portugal and Slovakia.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

It was revealed at the Time Warner shareholders meeting that Cartoon Network has picked up the option for Green Lantern: The Animated Series, a CG series, per Heat Vision.  In addition to Warner Bros.’ movie starring Ryan Reynolds that is set to release June 17, 2011, Warner Bros. other plans for the DC Comics’ property include a direct-to-video release (2011), expanded publishing program (2011), as well as a series of digital motion comics and other online content.  The new animated series is set to debut “in the second year after the film release,” which takes us to 2013.

Chris Columbus’ 1942 Pictures and South Korea’s CJ Entertainment unveil their production slate of three movies, two of which are targeted to kids/tweens/teen, per Variety.  1942 Pictures and CJ Entertainment entered into a three-year development deal in fall 2009.  The two kid/tween/teen projects are feature film adaptations of Neil Gaiman‘s (Coraline) novel The Graveyard Book  and Greg Taylor‘s book Killer Pizza.  The Graveyard Book movie will be written and directed by Neil Jordan.  CJ Entertainment is set c0-finance and distribute Graveyard in South Korea and Japan.  Wayfare Entertainment, Framestore and Gaiman.  Killer Pizza is being written by Adam Green and will be projected by Raffaella de Laurentiis.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and Rogers Communications ( www.rogers.com ) ink a new partnership under which CBC ( www.cbc.ca ) will provider Rogers subscribers with a range of new kid’s programming, premium sports programming, primetime series, and news programming available all the time and anywhere via Rogers Digital Cable, Rogers On Demand, Rogers On Demand Online, and its so to launch Rogers On Demand Mobile platforms.

KidsCo, the kid-targeted international channel, re-launches its website Kidscotv.tv ( www.kidscotv.tv ) first in Australia, and will then roll out across Asia, Europe and the Middle East in 11 languages by September 2010.  Developed by Prism Entertainment, the new site offers live streaming video of full episodes of original programming and trailers, new games and downloads as well as regionally crafted competitions, and also allows kids to interact with one another.  The site also features characters featured on the channel including Sonic the hedgehog, Dino Squad and its original programming Boo & Me and Jass Time!, kid-friendly browsing (e.g. 3D imaging, animated icons, carousel scrolling).  Additionally, Kidscotv.tv provides multiplatform commercial opportunities to reach the KidsCo audience and their families.  Upcoming specific re-launch dates and territories include:  July 1  Western Europe (Spanish, Portuguese, German, French English, Macedonian); August 1  CEE and ME (Russian, Hungarian, Romanian, Polis, Turkish, Greek, Arabic); August 2  UK (English); and September 1  Asia (English).

Mill Creek Entertainment debuts the full He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series (39 episodes) on iTunes.  Based on the updated Mattel toy line, the newest He-Man series aired 2002-2004 on Cartoon Network and is also now available on DVD.  Consumers can purchase the series for $10.99 for each of the three seasons, while individual episodes are available for 1.99/each.  The original He Man animated series (65 episodes), based on Mattel’s original He Man toy line, ran from 1983-85.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Moonscoop and Rob Dyrdek, skateboarder/entrepreneur/reality TV star, enter into a licensing deal with Mattel for the new action/comedy animated TV series Wild Grinders.  Under the agreement, new toy partner Mattel will develop, create and market a new line of action figures, which will debut this fall 2010, in the US.  A new Wild Grinders animated series is slated to launch in 2011.  Moonscoop and Dyrdek also plan to grow the brand across multiple platforms, including featuring segments on new episodes of Dyrdek’s MTV series Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, as well as online, on mobile etc. Created by Dyrdek, the Wild Grinders is based on his childhood experiences and revolves around a group of kid skateboards.  Originally launched in 2009, the initial Wild Grinders action figure line was available at Wal-Mart stores.

Hudson Entertainment, the North and South American subsidiary of Hudson Soft, is partnering with Nelvana Enterprises to develop and distribute video games based on Nelvana and d-rights’ new animated Beyblade TV series Beyblade: Metal Fusion.  Game titles are set to release for Nintendo DS and Wii in time for holiday 2010.  The new Beyblade game will be developed by Hudson Soft in Japan and available in North America and in most of Europe territories during the 4Q 2010.  Hudson Soft will release the games in Europe. The animated TV series, which launched on YTV (Canada) last month, is slated to debut in the US on Cartoon Network this month.

Target introduces an exclusive collection of 100+ Toy Story 3 products, which of course are based on the new Disney-Pixar movie that opens June 18.  The new Toy Story 3 products include toys, apparel, kids bedding, sporting goods, party supplies, and back-to-school accessories among other categories.  Target’s exclusive products include the To the Rescue Nintendo DS video game, Toy Story Woody Role Play, Glow in the Dark Space Alien, 7-pack of Andy’s Toys, Lego Pizza Planet Truck Building set and Toy Story Chutes & Ladders.  Target has also launched a dedicated Toy Story 3 boutique at www.target.com/toystory .

Bella Sara gets a new licensing deal, brokered for rights holder Hidden City Entertainment by licensing agent Kidz Entertainment/EEMC.  Top-Toy/K.E. Mathiasen (TT/KEM) signs on to produce an array of Bella Sara-branded products including books bags, book wrappers, towels, bedding sets, t-shirts, sleeping bags, notebooks, and stationery sets.  The products lines are slated to launch this fall across Scandinavia, German, and Benelux.  TT/KEM will also launch a Bella Sara toy line with Giochi Preziosi and carry the trading card game in its network of retail stores.
