Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 18, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Netflix has inked a multiyear deal with DreamWorks Animation to exclusively offer original series based on the studio’s feature franchises like Shrek, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda. Per the deal, Netflix will have worldwide first-run rights for shows developed by DreamWorks, which plans to produce more than 300 hours of new programming. Though the companies did not reveal which DreamWorks properties will get a serialized treatment, they said the programming will be “inspired by characters from DreamWorks Animation’s hit franchises and upcoming feature films.” The first of these new shows will arrive on Netflix in 2014. This follows a previous deal between the two companies to exclusively offer a new original series called Turbo F.A.S.T. based on the upcoming DreamWorks film, Turbo. Turbo F.A.S.T. will arrive in all Netflix territories this December.

— In other words: A programming deal with DreamWorks to make TV shows based on movies that kids already love isn’t a bad way to replace the loss of Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants, all of which went away when Netflix’s deal with Viacom expired.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Fullscreen, one of the top multichannel networks on YouTube, has closed a Series A round led by The Chernin Group, with participation from Comcast Ventures and WPP Digital. While Fullscreen didn’t divulge any official number for its Series A round, multiple media reports indicate that it is in the $30 million range. The new cash will be used for the development of more owned and operated original content as well as expanding Fullscreen’s content and technology into international markets. The company will also apply the capital toward audience development, sales, and its SaaS technology for content creators and brands to build and engage with audiences on YouTube. Fullscreen’s network currently consists of more than 10,000 channels, 150 million subscribers, and 2.5 billion+ monthly views.

CONTENT EVERYWHERE

Over in the UK, Amazon’s SVOD service, LoveFilm, has inked a deal with Disney to offer more Disney films on demand. New additions include Pixar films Wall-E and Ratatouille and other recent titles like Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, as well as classic Disney films like Lady and the Tramp, Dumbo, and Sword in the Stone. LoveFilm is available on a variety of devices in the UK, including PCs and Macs, the iPad, Nintendo Wii and Wii U, the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, and the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD.

ADVERTISING

VivaKi is partnering with social ad solutions provider Mass Relevance to give all Publicis Groupe agencies access to Mass Relevance’s platform and product suite. The Mass Relevance platform aggregates, filters, and displays real-time content from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, and YouTube. Advertisers can use the platform to provide a filtered feed of conversations and content tied to an ad campaign, product launch, event, or other activities. With this deal, Publicis agencies will be able to create and integrate branded social feeds on their clients’ owned and operated web and mobile properties.

RESEARCH NEWS

The latest Nielsen survey of connected device owners pegs 46% of smartphone owners and 43% of tablet owners as dual-screen users when watching TV. In addition, Nielsen says more than two-thirds of tablet and smartphone owners accessed the second screen multiple times a week during Q1 2013. How are these second-screen users using their handheld devices during a TV show? While general web search (76% of tablet owners and 63% of smartphone owners) and surfing (68% and 55%) are the top two activities, some do employ their device to access content related to what they are watching. During Q1, 49% of tablet owners looked up info on actors, plotlines, athletes, or teams while watching TV (34% of smartphone owners said they do the same). In addition, 21% of tablet owners and 18% of smartphone owners read conversations about the program on social networks, and 15% of tablet owners and 10% of smartphone owners watched a TV program because of something they read on a social media site.

The Yahoo-ABC News Network generated 2.74 billion page views in May, according to comScore data. Rounding out the top five: CNN (1.92 billion), Huffington Post Media Group (HPMG) News (1.50 billion), Fox News Digital (1.05 billion), and NBC News Digital (1.04 billion). In terms of unique visitors, Yahoo-ABC News also ranked first with 89 million. That top five was filled out by: CNN (69 million), HPMG News (64 million), NBC News Digital (57 million), and CBS News (35 million).

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Instagram might soon offer a Vine-like video-sharing capability, according to TechCrunch. Per the report, Facebook will unveil such a feature during a scheduled product launch event the social network has scheduled for this Thursday, June 20.

Social TV platform Viggle says its users have now checked into a TV show more than 250 million times. Recently, the service, which allows users to unlock rewards by checking into TV shows and completing other activities, surpassed 3 million registered users.

The Weather Channel is partnering with Virgin Media to power weather services for Virgin Media TiVo devices and VirginMedia.com. “Brits talking about weather is a bit of a cliche, but combined with our popular online and mobile internet properties, this multiscreen deal will add plenty of value for our millions of customers wherever and however they want to check the forecasts,” said Lynette Turnbull, Virgin Media’s Head of Multiscreen Commercial Development and Product Management.

EXEC MOVES

RTB video ad solutions provider SpotXchange has named Allen Klosowski as VP/Mobile and Connected Devices. In the new role, he will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies for SpotXchange’s mobile and connected devices digital video advertising business.

Legendary Entertainment has named ex Warner Bros TV chief Bruce Rosenblum as the President of its newly created division, Legendary Television and Digital Media. Per Deadline, Rosenblum will oversee Legendary’s expansion to TV and digital media. This includes producing original programming for both linear and digital platforms worldwide, as well as being in charge of digital distribution for Legendary content across digital platforms. 

Rich Godwin has joined ad tech company Media6Degrees (M6D) as its new Director/Sales, West Region. Previously, Godwin worked in sales and marketing for Google and Yahoo. At Google, he managed teams focusing on tech and packaged goods. He will be based in SF. M6D has also hired Mary O’Reilly as VP/Human Resources.

NBC News Digital has hired Tony Dokoupil as a Senior Writer for NBCNews.com. He will begin his role in September and will report to Hillary Frey, who joined NBCNews.com as Editorial Director of News in April. Most recently, Dokoupil was a Senior Writer at Newsweek & The Daily Beast.

THE DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

If you watched game five of the NBA Finals on Sunday night, you noticed a three-minute video/ad for Jay-Z’s upcoming album, Magna Carta Holy Grail (what a name). If you watched the video, you also noticed a plug at the end for Samsung and its line of Galaxy S devices. Why? Because Jay-Z and Samsung plan to distribute one million copies of the album for free to Samsung Galaxy and Note users. Samsung owners will also get the album 72 hours before its wide release.
