Cynopsis: Kids!
06/14/11

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and CBBC are partnering to produce a new, multi-media, comedy series for K6-11, Strange Hill High (13×30).  The series debuts a new hybrid technique that combines puppets, stop motion and CG, which has been dubbed “hypervynorama”.  Set in a forgotten inner-city school with endless secrets and mysteries, Strange Hill High follows a group of three students who investigate all the odd and other worldly events that happen at the school, with absurd results.  FME will manage worldwide distribution of the series (excluding the UK), as well as the brand licensing, home entertainment and other ancillary rights on behalf of CBBC and FME’s Children & Family Entertainment division.  Launching the brand at Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas this week, FME is seeking partners across multiple licensing categories including vinyl toys, gaming, mobile, sponsorship, and online, live events among others.

In a regulatory filing yesterday, Discovery Communications announced that in May 2011, the K6-12/family targeted network The Hub, a joint venture of Discovery Communications and Hasbro, amended its license fees with Hasbro for animated programs.  The Hub pays license fees for animated programming from Hasbro and its Hasbro Studios.  According to the filing, this amendment creates a “trigger event for purposes of intangible asset and goodwill impairment testing”.  The Hub’s management is currently in the process of conducting a fair value analysis to support goodwill writedown, but until the assessment is complete there are determinations.  The evaluation is expected to be completed during the Q3 2011.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Martha & Friends, a new girl-targeted multimedia property from A Squared Entertainment in partnership with Martha Stewart and Martha Stewart living Omnimedia, will launch at marthaandfriends.com ( www.marthaandfriends.com), through AOL Kids, on July 1, 2011.  Aimed specifically at girls 6-11, Martha & Friends features a 10-year-old Martha Stewart and her best friends and two dogs doing cooking, crafts and other projects in short-form webisodes.  The property also includes online games and activities that underline the lessons from the projects.  26×3-5 minute new webisodes will be introduced every other week and Hallmark Channel will air a 30 minute July 4th special on Sunday, July 3 at 9a, and five additional primetime holiday specials throughout the year around Back to School, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

In Canada, Astral’s Family Channel and Disney Junior place orders for further episodes of four Canadian original productions for the 2011-12 season.  Family Channel give the go ahead on a second season of the live-action comedies Really Me, from Fresh TV and the short-form series What’s Up, Warthogs!, from Dolphin Entertainment/Aircraft Productions, and a third season of Temple Street Productions’ Wingin’ It.  Disney Junior orders up a second season of the new animated series Justin Time from Guru Studio, for both the English and French language versions of the network in Canada.  All four series are slated to begin production later this summer in Toronto.  Really Me is produced by Fresh TV in association with FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME).  FME holds worldwide distribution, brand licensing and home entertainment rights (excluding Canada) for the series.

The Hub host the world premiere of the original behind the scenes special The Making of Transformers: Dark of the Moon on Saturday, June 25 at 2p, just four days ahead Paramount’s release of third Transformers feature film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, on June 29.  Produced by Hasbro Studios, The Hub original special also includes appearances by Transformer director Michael Bay and interviews with cast members Shia Labeouf and Josh Duhamel.  The Hub will also feature a seven-hour marathon of back-to-back fan favorite episodes of Transformers Prime and Transformers Generation 1, with on-air pop-up trivia and content during the episodes, on Monday, July 4, 1-8p.  Fans can also go online to Hubworld.com ( www.hubworld.com ) to see additional episodes and take play interactive Transformers-themed games.

Chorion enters into a multiple rights deal with German broadcasters Super RTL for the preschool property Octonauts.  Under the new agreement, Super RTL acquires Octonauts series and specials (50×11 and 2×22) with a second window to play on Disney Germany.  The deal includes TV, home entertainment and licensing and merchandising rights for the property.   Octonauts is slated to premiere in Germany on Disney Junior this summer and Super RTL this fall 2011.  Octonauts, which made its initial launch on CBeebies (UK) in fall 2010, will make its US debut on Disney Junior next year.  Chorion has also completed broadcast deals for Octonauts with Disney Junior channels in France, Italy, India, South East Asia, and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (Middle East) and Hop! (Israel), as well as with Scandinavian broadcasters YLE (Finland), DR (Denmark) and TV2 (Norway).  The series also airs on ABC and ABC 1 (Australia).  The first season of Octonauts has also been acquired by TF1 (France), RTE (Ireland), Discovery Kids Latin America, MNet (South Africa), Yoopa (Canada), RTP (Portugal), Disney Japan and Truevision (Thailand).

Bejuba Entertainment completes international broadcast deals for its animated preschool series Stella and Sam.  Based on the Stella and Sam books by Marie-Louise Gay and adapted and produced by Radical Sheep Productions, Stella and Sam has been newly acquired by Disney Junior Australia and New Zealand, YE (Finland), RTP (Portugal), NRK (Norway), Hop (Israel), TFO (Canada), and PakaPaka (Argentina).

American Greetings unveils the new Strawberry Shortcake character, Cherry Jam.  This fall American Greetings Properties (AGP) will debut the new Strawberry Shortcake character, Cherry Jam, on the second season of the CGI animated series Berry Bitty Adventures on The Hub.  A singing star, Cherry Jam has many fans but also dreams of a place where she is adored for who she is offstage.  That will happen when Cherry Jam arrives in Berry Bitty City, where she’ll become a music teacher, voice coach and a friend on the new season of the preschool series.  The introduction of Cherry Jam will be supported by a toy line from Hasbro available spring 2012.

Distribution360 secures program sales for there properties with UK-based CSC Media Group, which owns and operates several TV channels in the UK.  CSC has acquired the preschool series This is Daniel Cook (65×6) and This is Emily Yeung (65×6) for air on its preschool-targeted Tiny Pop channel beginning later this summer, and Ambition Skatecamp (8×30) for air its boy 7-12 aimed channel Kix beginning later this summer.

San Francisco-based Everloop ( www.everloop.com ), a new startup social network for kids under 13, launches EverTExt, the first real-time moderated text messaging for kids offered by a social community platform and is COPPA compliant (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act).  Similar to Everloop.com’s security protocols for instant messaging, e-mail and site communications, the technology prevents distribution of personal information and the use of negative language, including bullying or cursing. Once a user opts-in to EverText, they can send updates to Everloop that will be seen by friends who have also opted-in on their profile page and from their mobile phones.

SISU Home Entertainment will release Shalom Sesame’s Adventures in Israel on DVD in the US this September 27, 2011.  Starring Grover and celebrity host Anneliese van der Pol (That’s So Raven, Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast) as they travel to Israel, the 12-part DVD series (30-minutes each) is co-produced by Sesame Workshop and Channel Hop! (Israel) and is designed to offer American kids/families a look at the diversity of Israeli life and Jewish culture and tradition, including lessons on Hebrew letters and words.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Nickelodeon will launch a new consumer products line based on the math-centric preschool series Team Umizoomi with the Team Umizoomi Preschool Math Kits beginning next month exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores.  From mid-July, the Math kits can be purchased online from Nickelodeon.  Developed with educational consultants, The Team Umizoomi Preschool Math Kits cover nine areas of early learning math (e.g. numbers, counting, patterns, shapes, sorting, measuring) and includes curriculum support materials including: workbook (48 pages); a storybook (24-pages); 24 Mighty Math Mission Cards; activity book (48 pages); and Team Umizoomi episode on DVD.

Nelvana Enterprises enters into a licensing partnership with Fisher-Price, which will serve as the master toy partnership in the US for the preschool brand Max & Ruby.  Fisher-Price has developed a full range of toys, including plush, playsets and bath toys, which are expected to begin rolling out at retail in spring 2012 with a full launch in fall 2012.  The TV series, which airs in the US on Nickelodeon, is based on the Max & Ruby books by author/illustrator Rosemary Wells.  Nelvana recently announced the production of 26 new episodes in association with Chorion.

Spin Master and Mind Candy partner for the US launch of the Moshi Monsters toy line, which will be available exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores and Toysrus.com from late July 2011.  The Moshi Monsters line will feature six plush Moshi Monsters characters, and 32 Moshling minifigures manufactured by Spin Master.  The toys feature secret codes that unlock virtual items for adopted Moshi Monsters, as well as special trial memberships.  Additional categories will include trading cards produced by Topps and books published by Scholastic.  Moshi Monsters ( www.moshimonsters.com ) recently surpassed 50 million registered users worldwide.

Discovery Communications taps Hasbro as the licensee for a new plush line in Latin America for the Discovery Kids channel’s Doki, and friends in November.  Under the Discovery Kids banner, Hasbro will develop a line of plush products that will target K2-6. The initial range featuring Doki and his friend Mundi will include a 10″ basic soft toy line, 12″ interactive singing and talking plush, and 10″ feature plush. As part of a multi-year agreement, Hasbro also plans to introduce a soft toy range based on Doki’s friends, Fico, Anabella, Gabi and Oto.

Marvel Entertainment continues its “Avengers Assemble” initiative, an umbrella theme to provide licensees and retail partners to develop long-term consumer products programs for Marvel Studios‘ Super Hero feature film slate, including the upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22, 2011) and Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) and recently released Thor.  Marvel continues to look for opportunities with licensees across all core categories to build licensing and merchandising programs, as well innovative retail and co-branded programs, as part of “Avengers Assemble”.  The effort continue to be anchored by noted partners that will be developing Marvel’s The Avengers specific merchandise for next summer’s release. These include category leaders Hasbro, Hallmark, Huffy, Kellogg’s, Fruit of the Loom, and Brown Shoe, among others.
