Cynopsis
06/13/06
Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, June 13, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Just eight matches into the world tournament, Univision‘s Spanish-language coverage of the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 has averaged 2.6 million total viewers per game, a 1.7 million increase over the 2002 World Cup average for the first 8 games. According to Nielsen’s NTI overnight ratings, Univision’s coverage averaged 1.7 million A18-49 viewers per game with big jumps in both the Teen 12-17 and Kids 2-11 categories. Mexico’s victory over Iran was the most-watched sporting event in Spanish-language television history with a 5.4 million total viewers.
Tonight’s Premiere:
CBS: Tuesday Night Book Club at 10p
From the guys who brought Da Vinci’s Inquest, Cold Squad and Stone Undercover from Canada to the US, comes Intelligence. Program Partners and Thunderbird Films have picked up the worldwide distribution rights of the crime drama set to debut on the CBC in Canada this fall. The show focuses on a crime family and its newest head of family, and the police unit who have him under constant surveillance, determined to end his reign.
A new show being developed for VH1 from the exec producer of America’s Next Top Model Ken Mok, is called Egotrip Presents The White Rapper Show, per Variety. A reality show with 12 white contestants, all looking to be the next rock star white rapper. Michael MC Serch Berrin will host the 8 episodes ordered by the network. As with so many reality shows these days, all 12 will live together in a house in the South Bronx and participate in a series of challengers designed to test their musical skills as well as their social interaction skills within the African American culture.
According to recently released Kagan Research, cable networks in 2005 earned $29.9 billion in revenue, up 12.7% over the previous year. In 2006 that number looks like it will go up to $33.8 billion, up another 13.1%. While both of these increases pale in comparison to the 13.5% growth in 2004, the revenue says Kagan will come from more from CPM increases in national ad sales, rather than from cable affiliate fees.
Bravo will premiere the new original series Tabloid Wars, set inside the newsroom of The New York Daily News, on July 24 at 9p. The one-hour, six episode series will chronicle the lives of several journalists as they report on crime, celebrity news and murder in New York City. Filmed last summer, the show is produced by Hearst Entertainment Inc. for the network.
Finding Miss America, the seven-episode documentary series airing on CMT prior to the 2007 Miss America Pageant, will be shot in the Los Angeles area this September 5-13. The series will document all 52 finalists as they maneuver through the preliminary competitions that lead up to the two-hour pageant finals. CMT will broadcast the actual pageant live on CMT in first quarter 2007; the location has not been announced. Finding Miss America is produced by Julie Pizzi and Patty Ivins at PB&J Television, with Paul Villadolid and Nicole Zien as executive producers for CMT.
MTV has launched Viewser Labs, a new experiment partnering the network, sponsor clients and advertising agencies, with the long-term goal to go beyond the standard :30 spot and the banner ad. MTV creatives will partner with key clients and agencies to develop a new viewing experience that takes into account the viewer’s usage habits, culture and technology, with eventual utilization of pods to programming and promo spots to product integration across all MTV outlets. What the heck is a “viewser”? According to Lost Remote online site, it’s defined as a TV viewer who also dabbles online.
Hey! You know that sweepstakes I told you about yesterday where the winner gets tickets to a major sporting event, the Ultimate Fan Ticket Package? Well, guess what? Even better – the winner doesn’t get to go to just one event, you get two tickets to every single event on the list – NCAA Final Four to the Super Bowl. That’s pretty wild. Check here for details: http://www.cityofhope.org/TimNesvig/raffle.htm.
Getting married in October? Then you might consider cutting a lot of costs by applying to be on the next Food Network Caters Your Wedding special. The third installment, which will air in June 2007, is the Food Network Caters Your Hawaiian Wedding, hosted by Giada De Laurentiis. The lucky couple will receive an all-inclusive Hawaiian wedding, beginning with a trip aboard the Celebrity Cruise ship Infinity departing from Los Angeles in October 2006, a designer wedding cake, consultations with Brides magazine editors, a ceremony on the beach in Hawaii and a special reception catered by Food Network stars. If this sounds like you, the deadline is July 24 – check here for the application and details: www.foodnetwork.com.
Casting call: Fine Living TV Network will launch a nationwide search for a new host of The Wandering Golfer beginning July 15. Applicants must submit the written application and a videotape explaining why they should be given this hosting and traveling opportunity. The current host, Chad Maulsby, is leaving to spend more time with his family. The new host will be announced in November and the new season will premiere in Spring 2007. For all rules and information plus the application form, go to www.FineLiving.com/golf.
Kelvyn Gardner has been appointed as Managing Director for the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) U.K. He will represent LIMA’s services to the U.K. licensing community through educational and networking events, oversee member services and the organization’s sponsorship of the Brand Licensing Show.
The New York Daily News has named David Ng as Executive Editor and has promoted Bob Sapio to Senior Executive Editor.
BBC America has upped Scott Gregory to VP/Scheduling, where he will build the program and promotion scheduling strategy through the creation of new sponsorship opportunities and manage the network’s editorial and program operations strategy. The network has also hired Andrew Fechner as Director/Scheduling, where he will supervise the daily programming and promotion scheduling staff and the scheduling strategy for series and specials, as well as the promotional campaigns for the linear channel and VOD.
Kim McQuilken, EVP/Ad Sales, Marketing and Enterprises for the Cartoon Network announced his departure to pursue other interests. His career with Turner Entertainment goes back to 1992 and he will stay through the current upfront season. Until a replacement is named, Cartoon Network’s executive team consisting of John O’Hara, SVP/Ad Sales; Phyllis Ehrlich, SVP/Promotions and Marketing; John Friend, SVP/Cartoon Network Enterprises; and Thalia Doherty, VP/National Sales Manager will now all report directly to David Levy, President/Turner Entertainment Ad Sales and Marketing and President/Turner Sports.
MSNBC and NBC News have named Dan Abrams as General Manager for the 24-hour cable news channel, effective immediately. Phil Griffin, SVP/NBC News will oversee MSNBC as well as NBC News’ Today. Dan will report directly to Phil. For this new position, Dan will relinquish the anchor post of his nightly program The Abrams Report which began in December 2001. However, he will remain as NBC News Chief Legal Correspondent for the Today show and other NBC News and MSNBC programs.
The production staff for The Megan Mullally Show, from NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution, has been assembled with Ken Fuchs as Director; Corin Nelson, Executive Producer; and Jeff Hall, whose company Jeff Hall Design, has designed the set. The Megan Mullally Show is now sold in more than 92% of the U.S. and is set to premiere in national syndication on September 18.
Concrete Pictures has hired Brian Black as VP/Interactive Media, where he will supervise the company’s expansion into the interactive market.
E! Entertainment has appointed Alex Maggioni as SVP/Original Programming and Series Development, reporting to Lisa Berger, SVP/Programming and Development. Alex will develop and produced scripted series for the network. The network plans to premiere its first scripted content in late 2007 or early 2008.
