06/10/08

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 10, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

UPFRONT UPDATE – 5 NETWORK TOTAL: ABC, FOX and CBS all finalized their upfront sales yesterday (NBC and CW completed their upfront sales late last week). Among the five networks, the total upfront take is $9.23 billion up 1.2% from last year’s total of $9.12 billion. This final amount also accounts for the $190 million The CW is relinquishing as a result of subletting its Sunday night lineup. Minus The CW, the total among ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC is at $8.85 billion, a 3.5% increase over last year. By network, here are the final numbers:

  • ABC netted $100 million more than last year at $2.5 billion in primetime commitments, which includes primetime sports telecasts. ABC’s CPM increase averaged a +9% and the network sold around 3% more inventory this year than last at 80%-85%.
  • CBS was in lock-step with ABC also scooping up $2.5 billion which is $50 million more than last year. However, this number does not include the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. CBS also sold 80%-85% of its primetime inventory which is up a few points from 2007 and averaged a +8% CPM increase.
  • FOX stacked up commitments totaling $1.95 billion which is up a bit over last year and posted CPM increases on average at +9%-10%.
  • NBC previously reported selling 80% of its inventory totaling $1.9 billion up from $1.8 billion in 2007 at a +5% CPM bump.
  • The CW wrote $380 million in primetime business which is down from $570 million in 2007, mostly due to the network giving up its Sundays nights to syndicated programming. For its Monday-Friday inventory, The CW averaged a +8% CPM gain.

CABLE UPFRONT UPDATE: The cable market which brings in around $7.5 to $8 billion, is making strides as Turner is reportedly 50% done with average CPM increases at +9%-10%. Viacom’s MTV Networks are roughly 75% finished with expectations it will wrap up the remaining amount this week.

Tonight’s Finales:
BET: Iron Ring at 8p
Bravo: Work Out at 10p

Branding Program for media and entertainment executives. Nov 17-19 NYC.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

In a twist on the typical “dating” series format, MTV ordered 6 episodes of Bromance, a reality show where guys will compete to be a new best pal of The Hills star Brody Jenner. Guys will try to corner Brody to get noticed while one will be eliminated from Brody’s bachelor pad each week, similar in style to MTV’s A Shot at Love or ABC’s The Bachelor. Ryan Seacrest Productions will produce Bromance and Ryan Seacrest, Brody Jenner and Eric Podwall will executive produce.

Comedy Central ordered a pilot for the yet-to-be-titled Bobby Lee project, reported THR. The network had previously announced this project in March as part of his development slate. The 30m narrative comedy, produced by Dakota Pictures, will focus on Bobby’s view of the world through a multicultural lens.

HBO has ordered up a new scripted series – Bored to Death, from 3 Arts Entertainment, contingent on casting, reports Variety.  The story is about a writer from Brooklyn who after a nasty breakup, begins to daydream he’s a private eye in an old novel, and the idea becomes a reality as he hires himself out as an amateur detective.

VH1 approved a new series from Lionsgate called Scream Queens where 10 wannabe actresses compete for a role in a horror flick produced by Lionsgate Films, according to THR. During eight one-hour episodes, the women will compete in various challenges and receive acting lessons from John Homa. One of Lionsgate’s unnamed directors will access the actresses’ progress and new-found skill level. The series is slated to premiere this fall.
