Save the date! The annual Cynopsis: Sports Business Summit is set to take place on Aug. 14 in NY, and will feature some of the biggest names driving sports today. In addition, we are holding our Women of Action cocktail event celebrating and discussing the impact women are having in the sports industry on Aug. 13.

New Programming + Deals

Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg is visiting South Korea in order to get some publicity for her book “Lean In,” but the Chicago Tribune reports that she is also meeting with Samsung Vice President Shim Soo-ok to try to form a mobile partnership. Facebook co-founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg already loosened the lid during a June visit with the nation’s president and Samsung execs. Sandberg is reportedly not specifically discussing a Facebook phone with the company, but just “any other project with which Facebook can manage to catch Samsung’s eye for a mobile partnership.”

Untitled Web Series, a “copyright-safe version of Inspector Spacetime, the Doctor Who parody featured on NBC’s Community,” is aiming to put together a second season of shows and wants the help of its fans to make it happen. Its first six episodes were funded through Kickstarter, so creator Travis Richey is going back to the well and asking for donations totaling $125,000 through the fundraising site in order to help produce the next batch of episodes of the science-fiction comedy. This is more than six times the amount raised for the first season, so Richey will make the episodes longer and actually fork over some cash to his cast and crew along with some planned guest stars, such as Big Bang Theory‘s Mayim Bialik and Star Trek: Voyager‘s Robert Picardo.

Blip, the home of free online web video, will premiere a weekly six-episode NASCAR-themed web series, Revved Up, this Wednesday that was developed with charcoal maven Kingsford. The series will follow diehard racing-fan brothers, the Trupianos, as they do everything from tailgate with fellow fans to peeking behind the scenes to see how racing teams prep for races. For those of you keeping score at home, the Trupianos are the fellas who also made a web series, Tailgate32, that featured them traveling around in a big RV to attend a tailgate party at all 32 NFL stadiums in one season.

Content Everywhere

Summit Entertainment, a Lions Gate company, has partnered with NBCUniversal. Summit’s upcoming release Red 2 will be the first feature film showcased on Fandango’s digital movie recommendation show, Weekend Ticket, when it makes its debut on NBCUniversal’s cable network USA Network, Syfy, and E!. Weekend Ticket will be 60-second vignettes with behind-the-scenes clips, original cast interviews, and, of course, encouragement to buy movie tickets through Fandango.com.

Microsoft is admitting defeat when it comes to battling with such folks as AOL TV, Apple TV, and Google TV. It has announced that it will stop production of its set-top box and pull the plug on the box on September 30. The service allowed subscribers to search the Internet, send emails, and access MSN Messenger on their televisions. It also allowed subscribers to access the radio and view photos. Microsoft is suggesting current subscribers move any content they have on the box to SkyDrive.

The YouTube channel Smosh has become the first on the site to reach 11 million subscribers. It only took 41 days to go from having 10 million to the site’s current 11 million, meaning one person subscribed every four seconds during that span. The Smosh site, featuring the comic work of 25-year-olds Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, originally launched in the fall of 2005, but has now grown to include other folks who handle Spanish-language, animated, and video-game content.

Advertising

U.S. retailers are shelling out big bucks on digital advertising. According to eMarketer, digital ad spending should rise as high as $9.4 billion by year’s end, $10.4 billion at the end of 2014, and $13.3 billion by 2017. The report notes that retailers are currently responsible for 22.3% of all digital ad spending, more than any other industry. About two thirds of those dollars are devoted to direct-response ads such as search, mobile messaging, and classifieds. Digital-advertising spend is also expected to grow in the financial-services, consumer packaged goods, and travel categories.

Research

Mobile TV and video service revenues should be around $10 billion by 2017, according to a new report from Juniper Research. That’s up from the $4.5 billion being spent this year. This will happen, Juniper reports, because of the continued growth of streaming subscription services and pay-for-title content as well as the ongoing rise of smartphone and tablet use. The report also notes that mobile operators will have a more and more difficult time in the coming years despite the growth due to their network capacities being strained by the rise of streaming services while trying to gain more revenue from video and TV usage.
Other findings include:
* The top three markets for Mobile TV and Video in terms of revenue will be North America, Western Europe and the Far East & China, whose revenue share combined will represent more than 80% of the total.
* With the World Cup and Olympics being held in Brazil in 2014 and 2016, respectively, Latin America should also be an important market to watch for Mobile TV.

Mobile Games + Apps

The Golf Channel had its best second quarter of all time with almost 29 million unique viewers. Along with that success came record months for golfchannel.com and Golf Channel Mobile: Golfchannel.com was up 26% in unique visitors and 39% in page views, compared with the second quarter of last year. Golf Channel Mobile was up 47% in unique visitors and 76% in page views vs. the same time period.

Microsoft may have given up on the set-top TV box, but Sony is apparently thinking about getting into the game, somehow. According to IGN, Sony has submitted a trademark application for PlayStation TV. Sony filed a similar application in September of 2006 and abandoned it last September. The latest trademark application was filed in late June.

A new app from NBCUniversal’s USA Network allows for its original programming, such as Royal Pains and Burn Notice, to be available to subscribers on smartphones and tablets. The app, USA Anywhere, allows viewers to see the shows the day after they’ve been aired on the cable network. NBCUniversal plans to launch similar apps for its other cable channels. The move to make more content available digitally is due to the strong growth of online video ad sales, compared with the slower pace of broadcast television ad sales. Episodes watched on the app carry the same commercials that appeared on the show as it was broadcast for the first three days
In Other words: The same commercials means that those views could count in Nielsen’s ratings. After that, though, different ads may appear, which should aid revenue.

Electronic Arts is promising that the visuals on games played on smartphones and tablets will soon match the ones played on consoles such as Sony’s PS3 or the Xbox 360. “Some of our engine technology that used to be console-specific now can, with modifications, power games on tablets and on phones in the near future,” Frank Gibeau, the EA Labels president told IGN. “We’re just getting ready for that.” This fact, along with the ability to use such digital tools as touchscreens, voice control, and cameras have allowed EA engineers to redesign games in new ways, Gibeau shared.

Digital Spotlight of the Day

Check out the new political parody web series, Cap South, that focuses on the everyday lives of Capitol Hill staffers in D.C., which launched yesterday. The staffers in the show mostly work for fictional congresswoman Gracie Todd Englewright. The show, filmed in D.C. and created by former Hill staffers, is attempting to encourage interaction with its audience by giving some of its characters Facebook pages as well as a phone number for the fictional congresswoman. Viewers are also invited to be part of the filming of the show’s finale at a happy hour in D.C. Three five-minute segments will air on YouTube twice a week and there will be additional content, such as fake political attack ads.
