Cynopsis: Kids!

7/09/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

DreamWorks Animation and Intel have entered into a strategic alliance that will see the studio use Intel’s future chips and advanced multiple processing cores to aid in the production of future 3D animated movies with the goal of “revolutionizing 3D filmmaking technology.”  The agreement begins with Monsters vs. Aliens, which will have its domestic release on March 27, 2009.  You may remember that DreamWorks has said that it will produce all of its feature films in 3D by next year.

BabyTV taps UK-based Two Way Media to create interactive games aimed specifically to toddlers 3-years and younger.  Under this new deal Two Way Media will be the exclusive provider of games to BabyTV’s new subscription-based game service, BabyTV Interactive, which will go live in fall 2008.  Two Way Media will initially create 10 game titles for IPTV, which will include memory games, color-matching games and an interactive version of Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, among others.  The new service will be available to TV networks that carry the BabyTV channel, including IPTV, cable and satellite networks globally.

MORE KIDS STUFF

High School Musical fans will get their first official look at the feature film High school Musical 3: Senior Year, when the trailer for the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures movie debuts on Disney Channels Worldwide on July 13, 2008.  In the US the trailer will bow on Disney Channel at 7:55p.  Then the trailer will be available online at Disney.com from July 14 at 12:01a, as well as on the international Disney Channel and Jetix platforms.  The first single from the movie, Now or Never, performed by the cast of the movie, will premiere Friday, July 11 at 7:15p on Radio Disney.  In case you haven’t marked your calendar High School Musical 3: Senior Year is set for release on October 24, 2008.

Marblemedia and Corus Entertainment have begun production on the second season of the YTV live-action reality series The Adrenaline Project.  Featuring a new tournament style format the new season follows 120 contestants competing over the course of 26 episodes.  The new season of The Adrenaline Project will premiere in fall 2008.

Hosted by Miley Cryus, the Teen Choice 2008 awards will feature new categories including the Choice MySpacer, honoring the celebrity that best uses their MySpace page to connect with their fans, and Most Fanatic Fan, which is pretty much self-explanatory.  Additionally, during the show some fans will be able to submit video questions for Jonas Brothers via MySpace.  Teen Choice 2008 will air Monday, August 4, 8-10p on Fox, with Teens 13-19 invited to vote for their favorites at www.teenchoiceawards.com. Nominees in the MySpacer category are: Robert Downey Jr., Channing Tatum, Ryan Sheckler, Katy Perry, and Jaime Pressly.

Nickelodeon will premiere four new Olympic-themed episodes this August.  The voices of Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton and actor Ben Stein will be featured in The Fairly Oddlympics, a new episode of The Fairly OddParents bowing Friday, August 1 at 8p.   Hamilton serves as an announcer at the Olympics in the episode, in both a cartoon version of himself as well as in a live-action sequence.  Nick Jr. will feature a sports-themed week Monday, August 4-Friday, August 8 (at 9a), featuring three premiere episodes its regular series Backyardigans in Match on Mt. Olympus, Dora the Explorer in We’re a Team, and Ni Hao, Kai-lan in Sports Day.  Rounding out the Nick Jr. sports week is a repeat of Dora’s World Adventure, and a marathon of the sports-themed episodes on August 8, 6:30-10a.

PorchLight Entertainment acquires the worldwide distribution, licensing and merchandising rights to Lincoln Butterfield Animation’s new animated kid 6-11 aimed series Tan (26×30).  The series is slated to be available for a fall 2009 debut.  The series revolves around the misadventures of Tan, a recent graduate of the Lo Fat Martial Arts Academy & Cooking School, who sets out to make friends and seek his fortune.  Tan, by the way, is an egg.  The program was created and developed at Lincoln Butterfield by animation veterans including director Robert Hughes (Phineas & Ferb), Mitch Schauer (creator, The Angry Beavers), producer Michael Lessa and business exec Joseph Walker.  Butterfield was founded by Hughes and Walker.

The Illuminated Film Company, in conjunction with TV Loonland, completes rights deals for Little Princess in Japan and Korea.  The broadcast, DVD and licensing rights to Little Princess have been acquired by Japan’s Chuo Eiga Boeki (Central Film Trading), a distributor, in conjunction with H & M Incorporated.  The Little Princess (65×11) will begin airing in Japan on Kids Station this month.  In Korea, Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) picked up the series and will debut it this September 2008.  Illuminated is currently negotiating a video/DVD and licensing deal for the property in Korea.  Illuminated works

Aardman Animations and RDF have teamed up to co-produce an exclusive short animated film for Comedydemon.com, RDF Digital’s new online comedy portal aimed at people 16-35.  Aardman Animations is opening it up as a short film competition to its employees, with the winning idea going on to launch exclusively on Comedydemon.com.  Additionally, the comedy website has licensed the rights to Aardman’s archives to be streamed as short-form clips, including Wallace and Gromit, Creature Comforts, Rex the Runt, A Town Called Panic, Morph, The adventures of Jeffrey, Stuff vs Stuff and seven other licensed short films.  RDF Digital is part of the RDF Media Group.

Cartoon Network New Media is partnering with Crisp Thinking, which specializes in online kids protection.  Crisp thinking will integrate its NetModerator system into Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall, the network’s first massively multiplayer online game aimed at K8-14.  Cartoon Network has also built in a range of other safety features into the MMOG, including: a list of pre-generated player names and moderator-approved names; open chat available under parent’s account only; pre-selected chat phrases; staff monitored chats and forums, among others.

MARKETING/LICENSING

National Geographic and kidthing ink a strategic partnership to reach kids and families and encourage them to gain a better understanding about our world and ways they can help take care of the planet.  Under the deal National Geographic educational games, read-along stories, creativity products, videos and so to kids/families via the kidthing service.  Additionally, as part of the multiyear deal, National Geographic titles about animals, habitats, space, geography, dinosaurs and more are being specially created for exclusive distribution on kidthing and will be featured in National Geographic’s own learning area within the kidthing store, which will open in fall 2008.

Wish Films, a UK-based indie production company, finalizes a deal with BBC Worldwide for the 2008 CBeebies Live! preschool arena tour, titled Treasure Hunt.  Wish Films’ directors, Lain Lauchlan and Will Brenton (the creators of Tweenies) have written and directed all of the CBeebies Live! tours, which are produced by Live Entertainment and Events.  Wish Films has written/directed a range of preschool-targeted live tours including Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends, Noddy, Postman Pat, Bratz among others, as well as creating/producing preschool series including the upcoming Jim Jam & Sunny (260×11) for CiTV.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Rick Clodfelter is named Sr. Manager/Content Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Carton Network and Boomerang.   He is based at Cartoon Network’s NYC offices.  The charming Clodfelter most recently served as a member of Discovery Kids’ Program Scheduling and Acquisitions team.  This move marks Clodfelter’s return to Cartoon Network, where in 1998 (when he must have been just 12-yrs-old) he toiled in Research and then Human Resources.  Prior to that he taught 5th graders for close to a decade.  Cheers Rick!
