Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
07/31/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 31, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Remember when being cool really meant something? Not anymore, too bad, it was a good expression.
There was a time that being cool meant being different, and that difference made you cool.
Nowadays, being cool means being the same, being different is just weird. In the office, it might be the bow tie guy, the guy who wears the seersucker suit or the woman with the tattoos. They are talked about behind their backs, they are snickered at and just seem out of touch with the corporate culture. And that is not only a shame, but also harmful to any and every company.
When you have any kind of institution that believes there is only one way to do things, those companies will eventually fail. Why? Because some odd, out of the box thinkers at a competing company thought of a different way, faster, better, less expensive way.
The old boy’s club may not be dead yet, but it certainly is on life support. Business as usual is business going bad. We need the bow ties, we need the searsuckers, we need the tattoos.
Business is changing, more now than ever. The out of the box thinkers, the weirdoes, the formally ostracized are now and always have been the pioneers.
So to all you weirdos out there, keep doing what you’re doing. And to all those HR Professionals out there, spend a little extra time with the weirdos, not only will they help you’re company, but they are actually pretty cool.

The 4 Most Common Interview Questions and How to Answer Them
by Joel Garfinkle
Each interview is different. The position, the interviewer, the corporate culture, you all of it comes into play with each interview process. However, despite the uniqueness of each individual interview, there are some questions that you’re likely to come across more often than not. Having answers at the ready for these questions can help you nail the interview and set yourself apart from the other candidates. Following are the four most common interview questions and how to answer them.
1. Tell me about yourself. Although this isn’t truly a question, it is one of the most common ways an interview begins. It may also come at the end of an interview in the form of the question, “Is there anything else you’d like to tell me about yourself?” Either at the beginning or the end, this is your chance to make sure the hiring manager knows what a perfect match you are for their position. Give a brief overview of your career with a focus on your skills and experience that are specifically relevant to the position for which you are interviewing. If their job description said they were looking for a candidate who had experience with X, Y and Z, this is your opportunity to tell them about your experience with X, Y and Z and the success you’ve had in the past with those skills, as part of a general synopsis of your career. Keep your answer fairly succinct at around a minute in length. A good interviewer will ask you to expound on points they found most interesting.
2. What are your strengths? This question is another opportunity for you to really shine during the interview process. Although this is a rather general question, you should tailor your response to include what strengths you have that will be of benefit to the company and are appropriate for the position you are interviewing for. Have a list of the top three or four items you excel at ready, as well as examples of how you’ve used these strengths successfully in the past, for other employers.
3. What are your weaknesses? This is probably one of the most difficult questions to answer, yet one of the most common you’ll encounter in the interview process. Everyone has a weakness, or something they’d like to improve upon, so don’t simply say you have none. That will ring both arrogant and false in the interviewer’s ears. Instead, choose a weakness you have and what steps you are taking to overcome it. Better yet, choose a weakness you have recently overcome, discuss what you did to overcome it, and how you continue to strive to not let it negatively impact your work.
4. What salary range are you looking for? This interview question is one that you do best to avoid answering. When it comes to salary expectations, usually he who speaks first loses. Give a figure too high, and you could cut yourself out of the running for the position. Give a figure too low, and you may leave money on the table when you receive an offer. Instead of answering the question directly, let the interviewer know that the position to you is more about opportunity than salary. If you both decide the position is the right fit for you, you are certain you can come to an agreement on compensation, when that time comes.

My supervisor has given my responsibilities that are clearly his. Since then, he makes a habit of taking two hour lunches and leaving early. What can I do without hurting my own career?
Having your supervisor delegate some of his duties to you can be perceived as a complement and even grooming for future advancement. However, if your boss is taking advantage of this delegation, it can be quite frustrating. Before you do anything, you need to consider your unique situation.
Are these added responsibilities negatively affecting your ability to complete your regular duties? Or are you able to take on the additional tasks without too much challenge. If the latter, then take this as an opportunity to gain experience in new areas that will make you better suited should your supervisor’s position come open (which may be likely if he’s always leaving early and taking two-hour lunches). However, if your regular duties are suffering, then you need to say something to your supervisor.
Request a meeting and begin with letting your supervisor know that you appreciate that he has confidence in you to take on these tasks. Then give specifics with how these new responsibilities are preventing you from completing other tasks. Ask for his help in prioritizing the old and new duties. Hopefully, he’ll then see that he needs to reclaim some of his tasks, because your plate is overfull.
Can I quit my job and still receive unemployment, or do I have to be fired or laid off?
Each state is different when it comes to unemployment rules and regulations. In most instances, unemployment insurance is typically only available to those who have become unemployed due to no fault of their own. Quitting your job is often seen as voluntary unemployment and, therefore, usually makes you ineligible to receive unemployment benefits. However, there circumstances where you may be able to quit your job and still collect unemployment.
If your working environment was hostile, unsafe or unhealthy, you were transferred into an unsuitable position, the employer reduces your pay or hours, or you are a victim of harassment, then you may still receive unemployment benefits. Personal reasons for quitting, that may be acceptable, include: health issues, needing to care for a sick family member, or changes in union rules. In most states you need a good cause for quitting, based on urgent and compelling reasons to maintain your eligibility.
