Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, July 31, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Former late-night talk show host, Tom Snyder died Sunday after suffering complications from leukemia. He was 71. From 1973-1982 he hosted NBC’s The Tomorrow Show which aired after Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. In 1995 he returned to late night with The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder, following Letterman on CBS.  Snyder later stepped back from the show and Craig Kilborn stepped up. Known for his chain-smoking, quick-fire questions and easy-going style, Tom interviewed some of the most interesting personalities of the era from members of the rock band KISS to Charles Manson. Tom also was the parody of Saturday Night Live as Dan Aykroyd famously impersonated him.

~ MORE STUFF ~

FX new drama series Damages starring Glenn Close, will get a repurposed run on MyNetworkTV, with the first two episodes airing tomorrow night.  According to Variety, the show will be cut slightly to adhere to a TV-14 broadcast rating for MyNetworkTV, which will remove some language and s#xual content. This is the first time outside Fox programming will air on the broadcast network.

Due to the recent demise of Jane magazine, SOAPnet has had to find a new magazine replacement for its reality series The Fashionista Diaries. The series began production in May and centers on six assistants working in the beauty and fashion publishing industry. The two assistants who were assigned to Jane magazine will now be reassigned to CosmoGIRL! magazine. The series will debut on SOAPnet tomorrow at 9p.

This Sunday evening at 10p on E! Entertainment marks the series finale of The Simple Life starring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.  The show has run for five seasons, two of them exclusively on E!.  This current season the show has averaged 843,000 viewers per episode, down approx 20% vs. last season.

Starting August 4, AmericanLife TV Network will showcase a new Saturday night lifestyle block featuring This Food, That Wine at 9p, Fixing Dinner at 930p, Save Our House, Save Our Family at 10p and ‘Til Debt Do Us Part at 1030p.

In its 20th year, Discovery Channel’s Shark Week began this past Sunday in primetime with the highest-rated premiere episode ever. Ocean of Fear: The Worst Shark Attack Ever (9-11p) 3.9 million total viewers tuning in.

NBC Universal Cable is sponsoring the “Dare to Direct” Short Film Contest tied with its digital network Chiller. The call for entries opens tomorrow and films can be uploaded from September 5-17. Amateur filmmakers are challenged to write, produce short horror films with a chance to win cash prizes and be included on Chiller’s Dare to Direct Film Festival. The films will be judged in several categories including Best Picture, Creepiest Character and Scariest Special Effects. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Jayne Mason has become Enterprise Partnership Leader at Cox Media and Cox Business Services in Hampton Roads, VA. Jayne will combine sales efforts for both entities for key accounts.

Michael Peikoff has been advanced to SVP/Licensing and Merchandising for 20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising. Michael’s position will now include supervision of all internal and external communications for the licensing unit in addition to overseeing the retail marketing and licensed promotions efforts domestically. He will report Elie Dekel, EVP/Licensing and Merchandising.

MEC Retail, a division of Mediaedge:cia (MEC) has appointed Ann McGrath as Client Services Director. Ann will manage certain current clients such as Colgate-Palmolive, Cadbury Schweppes and Pepperidge Farm and will work on new business efforts for MEC Retail and Retail Media Link. She will report to David Sommer, Managing Partner, MEC Retail. In addition, Sherif Fahmy has been upped to Director/Product Development, MEC Retail, where he will continue to manage daily operations for MEC Retail and Retail Media Link, and will now be involved with long-term product and business development.

AMC has hired Melissa Wasserman as VP/Advertising Sales Marketing from CBS Radio where she served as VP/Marketing Activation and Promotion. In her new position, Melissa will have responsibility over ad sales marketing for AMC and online. She will report to Linda Schupack, SVP/Marketing.

CBS Television Distribution has elevated Carol J. Strond to VP/Sales Administration. Based in New York, her duties will include supporting CTD’s sales staff in the administration of sales for such syndicated programs as Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, The Oprah Winfrey Show among others. 

Jim Hoos has moved to New York-based Nationalgeographic.com, the web site of the National Geographic Society, as VP/Advertising Sales. This appointment is effective immediately.

NBC Universal has added Kelly Edwards as VP/Talent Development. In this new position, Kelly will head the recruitment of diverse executives, writers and directors for the NBC network and Universal Media Studios in addition to the cable networks Bravo, USA Network and SCI FI Channel.

Daily Motion appointed Mark Zaleski as Executive Chairman, effective immediately. Mark previously served as CEO of online consumer trading platform provider QXL and before that worked for Webvan as President of Webvan Operations.

CBS, by a smidge, won at 8p with a Ghost Whisperer repeat at 1.3/6. During 9p, UNIV’s Destilando Amor shot way ahead of the pack with 1.8/6. ABC took the last hour as 20/20 won with a 2.0/7.
