Cynopsis: Kids!
07/27/10
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 27, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Sprout is set to launch its first, long form original series Noodle and Doodle (26×11) on Saturday, September 25 at 9a, in conjunction with the channel’s fifth anniversary. Noodle and Doodle will then air every Saturday and Sunday morning at 9a and again at 11:30a. The preschool series will air as part of the channel’s live morning programming block, The Sunny Side Up Show, which is expanding to include weekends. The Sprout produced series is hosted by Sean, co-hose of The Sunny Side Up Show, and Noodle, a puppet that enjoys working in the kitchen, and Doodle, a virtual electronic pal, and features arts, crafts and healthy cooking step-by-step activities for preschoolers and their families. The series also includes Sean’s dog Doggity, who takes viewers into an animated world where a group of cooking dogs team up to solve problems and cooking snacks in the kitchen. The animated Doggity segments were created in conjunction with series creator John McCoy and Ka-chew!, a division of Klasky Csupo (Rugrats, Wild Thornberrys). A corresponding website for the series will debut at SproutOnline.com ( www.sproutonline.com ) after September 25.
This week marks Astral Media’s Family Channel (Canada) launch of the English-language Playhouse Disney channel on Telus TV. The commercial free, preschool-targeted channel will be available to Telus TV subscribers in British Columbia and Alberta, who also subscribe to Family Channel, on channel 74. Playhouse Disney programming includes Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, Imagination Movers and Franny’s Feet. Joining the lineup in September will be the new season of Special Agent Oso and a new season of the original Canadian production, The Secret World of Benjamin Bear. Additionally, January 2011 will see the debut of Stella and Sam, a new series based on books by Marie-Louise Gay. Family Channel
ScandiTV will launch in North America on August 1, 2010. Based in California, the new service and provider of Scandinavian TV channels via TV, VOD and IPTV, news, kid-targeted programming and movies with the goal of offering a media and cultural exchange between Scandinavia and North America, as well as the Scandinavians living in the US and Canada. ScandiTV plans to expand its services to Latin America some time in the future. Offering a range of kid programming, the Nordic Package comes with four free movies per month with most of the movies, many of which have never been seen in North America before, subtitled in English. In addition to the purchase of a ScandiTV box (one-time fee $132), which connects to the users internet and TV, there are three subscriber packages: 6-month ($22/month); one-year ($20/month); and two-year ($18/month). One does not need to be a cable or satellite subscriber to receive the service but can switch to those services if they have them.
Sesame Workshop and Nigerian co-producer Ileke Media commence production in Nigeria this week on Sesame Square, the Nigerian version of Sesame Street. Slated to premiere later this year, Sesame Square is a half-hour series hosted by Kami, the girl Muppet HIV-positive character, and the brand new boy Muppet Zobi. Nigerians gave Zobi his name via a mobile vote. In the series Kami and Zobi will be part of locally produced segments such as “Word of the Day,” which will feature Nigerian kids. Sesame Square will also include Sesame Street formats including Bert and Ernie’s Great Adventures, Elmo’s World, Global Grover, and Play With Me Sesame.
TeenNick launches The Nightlife (4×30), a series of four new specials hosted by Nick Cannon, TeenNick’s Chairman, beginning August 5 at 9:30p. Focusing on new trends in fashion, music, dance and entertainment, one of the four specials will debut every Thursday night this August 9:30p.
