Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 26, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cartoon Network‘s animated series Ben 10 will get its first CGI animated TV movie, Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens, which will premiere in 2012 on Cartoon Networks worldwide.  Directed by Victor Cook (The Spectacular Spider-Man, Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated) and Executive produced by Silas Hickey, Creator Director/Animation, Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific, the new TV movie is being penned by Marty Isenberg and features the voice cast from the Ben 10 animated TV series.  Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens takes us back to 10-year-old Ben Tennyson, as he struggles through school, detention and bullies, and missing a fishing trip with Grandpa Max after being grounded by his folks.  Ben jumps at the opportunity to get away from it all at the Total Alien Immersion training program on the far side of the galaxy, but it is there that through a series of events finds Ben crashing back to earth stuck in his alien forms and going up against an new evildoer, Mechamorph Warrior.

DreamWorks Animation and Netflix working on a streaming rights pact that would give Netflix the exclusive streaming rights to DreamWorks Animation’s movies, per Bloomberg News.  DreamWorks Animation is currently in a pay-TV deal with HBO that runs through 2014, but according to the report HBO will let DreamWorks Animation out of its agreement.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Little Airplane Productions‘ short-form animated series Small Potatoes will make its US premiere on Disney Channel’s Disney Junior preschool programming block on Tuesday, September 6, 2011.  The series, which features a Small Potatoes music video and two sketches in each episode, already airs on CBeebies (UK), on the ABC (Australia) and on Canal + and Piwi (France).  To support the US debut of the series, SiriusXM‘s Kids Place Live will premiere the one-hour radio special, Small Potatoes, Deep Roots, Friday, September 2 at 9p.  Narrated by actor Malcolm McDowell, who also lends his voice to the band’s manager, the special will introduce the band Small Potatoes and its background to US audiences.  Leading into the radio special will be an interview with Little Airplane founder and series creator Josh Selig.  The special will air five times.

Disney Junior‘s animated series Jake and the Never Land Pirates will feature Sharon Osbourne (America’s Got Talent) and Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle) on recurring guest voice roles in episodes of the second season of the series, which will premiere in early 2012 on Disney Channel.  Osbourne will lend her voice to Captain Hook’s mother who comes on board to visit her son and isn’t too happy when she discovers he’s been stealing treasure from Jake and his pals.  Kaczmarek will voice Red Jessica, a swashbuckling pirate gale who grabs Captain Hook’s attention after searching for the celebrated gemstone, the Ruby Heart of Hearts.  Other celebrities who voice regular and recurring characters on the series include David Arquette, Tori Spelling, Lisa Loeb, Adam West and Ariel Winter.  Jake and the Never Land Pirates is produced by Disney Television Animation.

Teletoon Canada reveals its fall 2011 programming lineup plans for Teletoon, Teletoon at Night (featuring more adult aimed programming) and Teletoon Retro, which includes new and returning programs.  The new lineups will all launch Monday, September 5.  Some of the new season highlights for the different services include:

Teletoon

  • The Looney Tunes Show – a new comedy series featuring the Looney Tunes characters
  • Hole in the Wall – the live-action game show
  • My Life Me – the animated series follows Birch Small as she tries to fit and deal with teen angst, their identities and navigate the new social world of high school.
  • Beyond Human (working title) – the series follows host by Daniel Browning Smith as he searches the globe for people with unique genetic traits that translate into incredible powers
  • Young Justice – young Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis must prove themselves as superheroes and future members of the Justice League
  • Best Ed – the series revolves around the unlikely friendship between Ed, a good natured dog, and Buddy, a bumbling squirrel.
  • Meta Jets – the series follows an elite flying team, comprised of four young pilots, who protect the world from evil while competing for world racing supremacy.
  • Returning daytime Teletoon series include: the network’s original series Jimmy-Two Shoes and Johnny Test; Star Wars: The Clone Wars; Ben 10: Ultimate Alien; and Adventure Time with Finn and Jake.
  • Teletoon will also feature a five-episode sneak peek of its new original production, Detentionaire, airing the week of September 12-16.

Teletoon Retro: Jem (a 1980s animated series); Garfield and Friends; the 1960’s live-action Batman series featuring Adam West; My Pet Monster; Tom & Jerry Kids (1990s); Ned’s Newt (the 1990s series); among others.  Returning series include the classic series Casper & Friends and The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.

Teletoon at Night (again more geared to older audiences) will feature the new series Crash Canyon, and returning series such as Futurama, Archer and Robot Chicken.

Nickelodeon and Verizon announce an interactive widget that allows fans play SpongeBob SquarePants-themed games while also watching Nickelodeon shows.  Exclusive to subscribers with both Verizon FiOS TV and Internet, the widget features a series of four games that can be downloaded for free from Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, and the Verizon FiOS TV Application Storefront.  Subs can access the free widget by tuning into Nickelodeon and Nicktoons and then clicking the FiOS TV button on their remote control when the interactive bug appears.  Once opened, the games will be on the left-hand side of the screen.  Customers can also play the games any time by clicking on the Widgets button on the FiOS TV remote, and then selecting FiOS Widgets and then choosing the Nick Games icon under the featured category.  The SpongeBob SquarePants widget games are: Build-a-Bob; SpongeBob ShufflePants; Under My Rock; and X Marks the Spot.

Zinkia Entertainment’s animated preschool series Pocoyo moves into a full half-hour timeslot in the US on the Nick Jr. channel, where the series will now air Saturdays/Sundays at 1p.  The series began airing in short-form on Nick Jr. in the US last year.  The Pocoyo franchise also features a virtual online world Pocoyoworld.com ( www.pocoyoworld.com ), an app called Pocoyize, a line of Pocoyo toys from Bandai, and a series of new Pocoyo DVDs from NCircle Entertainment.  Additionally, Zinkia has just released a new iPad app, Pocoyo Gamebox ($.99), based on the Pocoyo characters.  Pocoyo Gamebox features five different mini-games aimed at preschoolers and allows players to redeem their game rewards in pocoyoworld.com.

MARKETING/LICENSING

This fall THQ will release Monster High Ghoul Spirit, a new video game based on Mattel‘s Monster High webisodes and fashion dolls, for Wii and Nintendo DS/DSi in October 2011.  The game will invite players to customize their own avatars and then hang out and socialize with Monster High characters such as Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Clawdeen Woolf, Lagoona Blue, Cleo de Nile and the rest of the gang, as well as learn new secrets and meet a new character in the game.  Monsters new to the campus will use all their freaky flaws in seven new episodes that have been created especially for this first Monster High videogame.

Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG) will feature a number of its new videos games and online art activities at the annual D23 Expo ( www.d23expo.com ), which will be held August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center.  Among the games that will be showcased at the even are:  Disney Universe, a new multiplayer action/adventure video game set in a mix of Disney and Disney Pixar based worlds, which will be released this fall 2011; Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension – a new video game based on the Disney Channel original movie of the same name; Cars 2: The Video Game, the recently released game based on the Disney Pixar animated movie; Disney Epic Mickey, the popular video game and its creators; Mobile games including Cars 2 and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products and Jazwares unveil their lineup of toys based on the CG animated series Fanboy and Chum Chum.  The new line, which will be offered exclusively at Toy “R” Us stores nationwide and online from August, includes a range of Fanboy and Chum Chum themed action figures, plush toys and electronics (walkie talkies, headphones, boombox).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) names licensing industry veteran Adam Berg as SVP/Membership and New Business Development.  In addition to establishing a membership growth strategy and identifying and developing opportunities within various segments of the worldwide licensing industry, Berg will also create and implement membership and business development initiatives to further enhance the image of the association and its relevance to members.  Berg joins LIMA from Equity Management, where he most recently served as SVP/Licensing Sales.

Scholastic grows its International division with two appointments.  Anne Boynton-Trigg is named VP/Export, and Edie Perkins, formerly VP/Export, is appointed to the newly created position of VP/International Product Development.  Boynton-Trigg will be responsible for continuing to expand sales penetration in both mature and emerging export regions, while also overseeing marketing efforts.  Perkins, who has worked in multiple divisions of Scholastic, will work across corporate divisions and international groups to build and grow the Scholastic brand worldwide.  Most recently Boynton-Trigg was SVP and GM, with Pearson Longman English Language Teaching.
