CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
07/26/06
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 26, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Disney has furthered its presence in India’s media market by entering into an agreement to acquire all of Hungama TV, one of India’s popular 24/7 kid’s channels. Disney will take a 14.9% equity interest in Hungama’s parent company UTV Software Communications Ltd. The total deal will reportedly run Disney $44.5 million total, that’s $30.5 million for Hungama and $14 million for its small stake in the UTV. Launched by UTV in Fall 2004 as a general entertainment channel targeted to K4-14, Hungama is a Hindi-language channel, featuring local Indian content. Disney content currently reaches 107+ million HH in India via a programming block that airs on terrestrial network Doordarshan, as well as another 30+ million HH through Disney Channel and Toon Disney/Jetix on cable and satellite. Hungama TV and Disney’s competitors in India’s kid TV market include Turner India’s Cartoon Network and Pogo channels, and Nickelodeon and Animax.
You’re not the boss of me! Oh yeah? The Advertising Council has teamed with a range of media and entertainment entities to launch Media Management, a nationwide public service campaign encouraging parents to be the boss of their kids and become more actively involved in what their kids are watching on TV and how much they are watching. The Media Management initiative includes PSA’s produced in partnership with several television associations, the TV broadcast networks; and satellite providers DirecTV and Echostar. The media industry campaign partners will donate a total of $300 million in ad time to feature the new PSAs during the next eighteen months. Targeted to parents each of the PSAs is tagged with the message, “You’re the boss of what your kids watch. Make the rules. Know the ratings. Use parental controls.” and direct parents to the www.TheBoss.org for more info. You can check out the spots here. The Media Management campaign was created pro bono by McCann Ericson NY, and the website developed by Ripple Effects Interactive.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
From dolls to books to TV, and now the American Girl characters are headed into feature films as part of a partnership between Walden Media and American Girl, Inc. The first feature film under the new pact will be based on the character Kit Kittredge, and will be produced by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Goldsmith- Thomas Productions with Red Om Films. Three made-for TV American Girl films aired on The WB in 2004 and 2005, and the third – An American Girl on the Home Front is scheduled to run on Disney Channel this fall. These three were produced by Red Om Films, Revolution Studios and American Girl in association with Warner Bros. TV Productions. American Girl, Inc. is a unit of Mattel, and Walden Media is a division of Anschutz Film Group.
4Kids Entertainment, Inc. will launch 4Kids TV VOD Channel on Comcast On Demand beginning August 7, 2006. 4Kids TV VOD will offer six different program menus featuring 10 hrs of 4Kids shows including Yu-Gi-Oh!, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sonic X, Kirby and Winx Club, each title replenished with new episodes every two weeks. 4Kids TV VOD will offer never-before-seen episodes and sneak-peeks. At launch the new on-demand channel will offer five previously unseen episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and a sneak peak of the first episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters.
In other 4Kids Entertainment news, the company has unveiled its line-up and premiere dates for the 5th season of its 4Kids TV (8a-12n) Saturday morning programming block on Fox this fall:
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward premiers July 29, 2006 at 10a
- Viva Piñata kicks off September 9, and is produced in partnership with Microsoft and Rare Ltd.
- Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters also launches on September 9
- Chaotic is set to premiere on September 30, and is based on the upcoming trading card game where players collect, battle and trade online. In the series some players receive mysterious passwords and find themselves transported to another world where Chaotic Creatures clash and players can shift into other creatures.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Columbia Pictures’ Spider-Man 3 will be released simultaneously in regular movie theaters and at Imax theaters on May 4, 2007. Imax expects Spider-Man 3 to run in 100+ of its North American theaters versus the 63 Imax theaters that ran Spider-Man 2 (2004). Returning for the third Spider-Man movie, which of course are all based on the Marvel Comics superhero, are director Sam Raimi and cast members Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco.
In an internal memo sent to staff yesterday, Time Inc.’s Chairperson and CEO, Ann Moore, and Editor-in-Chief John Huey announced Teen People will no longer be published as a print magazine after the September 2006 issue. However, the brand will remain alive as an online entity at TeenPeople.com. Launched in 1998 as both a print and online magazine, Teen People joins ElleGirl, the Hachette Filipacchi Media magazines who also shuttered its print operation to exist solely online.
