07/24/07

Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, July 24, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Drew Carey! Come on down! Drew has been chosen as the new host of CBS’ The Price Is Right succeeding the venerable Bob Barker. Apparently, CBS executives seriously considered Drew after they saw him do the pilot episode of Power of 10, which will debut on CBS August 7. Currently, reruns of The Price Is Right are airing featuring Bob Barker, and new episodes will begin production next month. The Price Is Right and its new host will launch this fall.

Tonight’s Premieres:
FX: Damages at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
Bravo: Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List at 10p
Oxygen: Bad Girls Road Trip at 10p

~ MORE STUFF ~

ABC Family jumps into the animated programming foray and introduces Slacker Cats August 13 at 10p. The half-hour comedy is about a group of cats and the humans they mooch off of. By the way, the cats and their humans can talk to each other and that is de rigueur in the town of Wendell. The show is produced by Film Roman, LLC.

CBS will make a quick programming change – for the next two weeks Pirate Master on Thursday nights will be replaced by 48 Hours, and thereafter with repeats of assorted drama series. If you’re a fan of Pirate Master, and as it is there are few of you thus the pull, the show’s last five episodes will run online at CBS.com

Outdoor Channel will begin a new seven-episode original series in October that spotlights the North American canine dock jumping competitions. DockDogs will feature East, West and Midwest qualifying events that result in the National Championship Finals. The show is produced by Fischer Productions, LLC.

National Geographic Channel’s longtime series Explorer returns with new episodes on August 8 at 8p. Some of the topics to be explored this new season will be the jellyfish population explosion, changes in dog breeds and temperaments, scientific discoveries on how a baby develops in the first 12 months and breaking the genetic code of the ancient Chinese mummies among other subjects.

MTV’s Laguna Beach will have a new vantage point for the fourth season as the show moves up the California coast to Newport Harbor. MTV will premiere Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County August 15 at 1030p. Also debuting on August 15 will be Virtual Newport Harbor at www.vmtv.com and starting this week viewers can go to newportharbor.mtv.com to see the cast bios, the official blog and exclusive photos.

Pete Wilson, 62, News Anchor at KGO/San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, died last Friday at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto of a massive heart attack. Pete returned to the anchor chair at KGO in 2002, after having been news anchor at KRON/San Francisco for 12 years. He first came to KGO in 1983 from KTXL/Sacramento. He is survived by his wife and one son.

And here is information on the New York Celebration of Life service in honor of Kelly Polk, who died recently after a long battle with cancer. The service will be this Saturday, July 28 at the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon at 4p. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent for a fund being established in Kelly’s honor, to benefit her daughters. Contributions to the fund or cards can be mailed to: Robert Polk & Family, 10225 SW 130th Street, Miami, FL 33176.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

NBC‘s My Name is Earl is getting a new cast member. As the new season opens, Earl is in jail, and gets to know another prisoner played by Michael Rapaport.

Joining the crew at CNN is Campbell Brown, an NBC News correspondent.  Brown moves to CNN in November, and speculation is swirling as to whether or not Brown’s new program will replace Paula Zahn Now.  Nothing from the network on Zahn, but a formal announcement on scheduling is expected in the next several days.  What CNN has said thus far is that Brown will be hosting her own primetime show on CNN.  Brown is also expecting the birth of her first child in December.

Variety reports HBO has ordered up another season of Big Love, with 12 new episodes.  Production begins in November.

And another item from Variety ABC has ordered up six episodes of a new reality show called Here Come the Newlyweds from AFN Prods and Warner Horizon Television, where several couples compete for prizes.
