It’s been reported that Google is stepping up its online cable television initiatives, a move that could have a major impact on how marketers connect with consumers across multiple screens. While the company has not made any statements regarding cable television, it has been meeting with major media companies that own cable channels, according to The New York Times.
Comic book creator and Batman writer Grant Morrison and Indian animation company Graphic India have partnered to launch the original animated web series 18 Days on YouTube. Based on the Indian epic myths of the Mahabharata, the series will launch on August 5 as part of YouTube’s global Geek Week event. It will be released in English, Hindi and Tamil and feature weekly episodes throughout the year for exclusive distribution on the Graphic India YouTube Channel.
Aereo is heading west. The streamer of over-the-air local broadcasts plans to go live for all of Utah in mid-August. The move marks the first Aereo launch to cover a whole state (the broadcast market for the metro area of Salt Lake City covers the entirety of the sparsely populated Beehive State). All consumers in the state will be able to access the technology on August 19.

Online video tech startup Genesis Media has launched a new, patented online video ad platform that can help publishers monetize their content. Content Unlock, which allows users to watch a video ad in exchange for getting free access to content, is launching with Starcom MediaVest Group as its charter client. Content Unlock creates targeted ads for brands seeking increased views and better audience engagement. For publishers, it acts as a “soft paywall,” allowing them to lock all or portions of their digital content. Content Unlock measures the value of each site visitor and performs real-time decisioning to determine how often content will be locked and which ads to present. In return, site visitors “pay” for access to the content with their attention.
It’s been reported that Apple is about to launch a revamped Apple Store app for iDevices as part of the company’s plans to increase sales of the iPhone and its other products. The new app is due out today, according to 9to5Mac, and is expected to integrate more closely with the App Store, iTunes Store, and iBookstore in iOS 6. Free downloadable content will likely be featured in the redesign as well as a range of apps offered in limited-time promotions.
Anheuser-Busch’s Budweiser has launched a mobile and social platform that doles out content to keep fans discovering new music on a regular basis. The beer brand has partnered with Facebook and Vice to create a microsite and Facebook application for its Made for Music global campaign that connects music fans via mobile and social media. Six different sets of content will give music fans a behind-the-scenes look at some of their favorite musicians.
RLJ Entertainment Inc. has named Nina Henderson Moore as President of OnCue, its newest digital channel, offering urban themed programming and original content. Moore will lead the development and expansion of OnCue, RLJ Entertainment’s proprietary digital channel launching in 2014. A media industry veteran, she last served as President of Griot Productions.
Eventbrite, the global self-service ticketing platform, has hired Randy Befumo, CFA as Vice President of Strategy. Befumo, formerly Director of Research at Legg Mason Capital Management, brings two decades of investment experience to the tech company. In his new role he will lead Eventbrite’s expansion into new markets and lead corporate development and strategy.
Jarkko Rajamaki has been appointed Vice President of Business Development at Burstly, the toolset for testing, analyzing and monetizing apps. In this newly created role, Rajamaki will be tasked with leading the company’s publisher and developer relations. Rajamaki joins Burstly from Rovio Entertainment, where he was head of advertising for the Angry Birds franchise.
Paramount Pictures has announced that Amy Powell has added the position of President of Paramount Television to her responsibilities as head of Digital Entertainment and Insurge Pictures. Powell’s promotion marks the first appointment to the start-up television division for Paramount, which will finance and develop television for all platforms from digital episodic content to prime time series.
Katherine Alford has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Culinary for Food Network, Cooking Channel, and the food category at Scripps Networks Interactive. Alford previously served as Vice President Culinary. In her new position she will continue to manage the test kitchen for Food Network and Cooking Channel, while expanding her oversight to include culinary projects for TV, digital and new business.
The landscape of pay-per-click (PPC) is constantly shifting, and 2013 is shaping up to be one of the most pivotal years in recent history. In conjunction with Google’s just-announced Q2 results, PPC Associates, a digital marketing agency, reports that mobile is hitting its stride, with an increase of more than 65% in both spend % and CPC from Q1 to Q2. With Google’s Enhanced Campaigns rolling out yesterday, mobile’s growth should only accelerate.
Topsy, the social analytics platform for real-time discovery and marketing, has launched a new feature in Topsy Pro that allows brands to find and reach consumers on Twitter through real-time Boolean search (ie, combining searches using the words “and,” “or” or “not”). Brands will be able to identify people who are actively searching for products and services by location and target them with personalized content, offers, and relevant social ads.
Telemundo Nueva York’s website TelemundoNY.com has reached a new milestone. The site ranks among the 50,000 most popular sites in the U.S. and top 100,000 in the world, according to Alexa.com. This comes on the heels of a rebranding initiative that started in early 2013. Since then, TelemundoNY.com has experienced an increase in web and mobile traffic of nearly 400 per cent, compared to the same period last year.

Lady Gaga strikes again! A 23-second video has emerged that’s reportedly footage from the promotional campaign for the singer’s upcoming third studio album, Artpop. The leaked clip shows the singer, who calls herself Mother Monster, licking the fingers of a strange creature’s hand.
