Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 1, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

July brings what so many fans of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: the Last Airbender have been waiting for, no not the M. Night Shaymalan’s movie yet, but the premiere of last 10 new episodes of book three all over the course of one week July 14 – 19, 2008, which includes the showdown between Aang and the Firelord.  Nickelodeon bows the new Avatar episodes beginning Monday, July 14, with Wednesday featuring an hour-long special, The Boiling Rock, and the week culminating with the debut of the 2-hour TV movie Sozin’s Comet, Saturday, July 19, 8-10p.  Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies will release Shyamalan’s Avatar movie adaptation in July 2010.  Meanwhile that same week Nicktoons Network will host daily Avatar 5-hour marathons each day, Monday-Saturday, July 14-19, featuring 10 episodes of Avatar each day, culminating on Sunday, July 20 at 5p with the 2-hour movie Sozin’s Comet.  Finally, Paramount Home Entertainment releases Avatar: The Last Airbender  Book 3: Fire- Volume 4 on DVD July 29.

Martha Speaks (40 episodes), the new animated vocabulary-based TV series from WGBH and Studio B Productions Inc. premieres on PBS Kids this Labor Day, September 1, 2008 at 7:30a and 3:30p (check local listings for times).  Targeted to preschoolers, the series is based on author/illustrator Susan Meddaugh’s Martha Speaks books series (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), who also serves as a creative producer on the series.  Additionally, the series will be supported online at www.pbskids.org/martha , where kids can take part in various games and activities, watch videos and download printable materials, while PBS Parents and PBS Teachers offers series support and resources for parents/caregivers/teachers to work with their kids to support vocabulary development.

International Film Group (IFG) inks an exclusive deal with Australian production company FARMkids to serve as the Sales Agent in the Asia-Pacific, as well as a co-production and executive producer agreement with media content company The Creative Farm.  Under the deal, IFG will work with The Creative Farm to produce/market their original properties, Big Fun Mega Happy Pet Land and Cow Cops, as well as reality-based and format programming ideas.  Additionally, IFG has completed the first deal under the FARMkids sales agency agreement with Australia’s national broadcaster ABC1 acquiring the FARMkids 3D CGI-animated series, which premieres today.

LEGO Education, a division of The LEGO Group, introduces LEGO Education WeDo, a new robotics product designed for use in classrooms for K7-11, at the national Educational Computing Conference in San Antonio, Texas.  The hands-on experience aims to get kids involved in critical thinking, teamwork and problem solving skills.  WeDo will be available in the US and Brazil from January 2009.  Developed for use in a range of curriculum areas including language/literacy (narrative and journalistic writing, storytelling, interviewing and interpreting), math, science, and technology, WeDo features new software developed by National Instruments.

NBA star LeBron James teams with Nickelodeon’s The Big Green Help campaign this summer in a new online mini-game, LeBron James: Worldwide Big Green Bike-a-thon!  The game asks players to help the bike-riding James (an avatar version of him at any rate) deliver green tips around the world to earn points and make their way to the next level.  Available at www.biggreenhelp.com , the game will also be featured in public service announcements airing on the network this summer.

American Greetings and Sesame Workshop expand their long-term partnership in a new multi-year licensing pact.  The new partnership including licensing the Sesame Street trademark and characters in the US and Canada on a range of categories including greeting cards, party goods, gift packaging, ornaments, juvenile valentines and sponsorship of Sesame Street on PBS Kids.  American Greetings also serves as a sponsor for Sesame Workshop’s various educational outreach efforts including Talk, Listen, Connect II: Deployments, Homecomings, Changes.  Separately, American Greetings and Sesame Workshop have also expanded their partnership to include licensing deals in Mexico, Australia and the UK.

HIT Entertainment grants Imperial Toy LLC the licensing rights to Barney bubble and sandbox toys from 2009.  The Barney Bubble line, available at retail beginning January 2009, includes the battery operated Barney Bubble Bellie.  HIT and Imperial Toys have other licensing deals include Thomas & Friends and Bob the Builder bubble and sand toys.

If I worked for Mattel’s American Girl Brands I’d be thinking about making a deal for a possible line of American Girl Laura Ingalls Wilder/Little House on the Prairie dolls.  Why?  Well, tickets went on sale for the musical version of Little House on the Prairie last Friday at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, setting a new one-day record for the noted legit theater selling 5,461 tickets.  And internet ticket sales didn’t begin until the next day.  The previous record holder was the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2007 production King Lear starring Sir Ian McKellen with 3,639 tickets in a single day.  Granted, not many ticket sales campaigns kick off with a morning event at the theater including family-centric activities, giveaways and appearances by cast members.  The show opens this August 15 and runs through October 5, with previews beginning July 26.  Melissa Gilbert, who starred as Laura (aka Half Pint) in the Little House on the Prairie TV series, will play Ma in the production.

Sony Pictures Entertainment promotes Valerie Van Galder and Marc Weinstock to Co-Presidents/Worldwide Theatrical Marketing.  Both will report to Jeff Blake, Chairman/Worldwide Marketing and Distribution.  Together Van Galder and Weinstock will develop and oversee worldwide marketing campaigns for films released by Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Animation.  The two have worked together for more than a decade, initially teaming at Fox Searchlight.  Most recently Van Galder has served as President/Domestic Marketing, Columbia Pictures and Weinstock as President/Marketing, Screen Gems.  Cheers Val!

Michele Band becomes a Partner and Co-Owner of Ignition Films.  The ever-popular Band will continue to oversee East Coast operations, Gotham Ignition, which she helped establish in 2004.  Currently directing commercials for Nickelodeon’s Creative Advertising Division, Band recently directed PBS Kids Morning Block with Miss Rosa, as well as several interactive DVDs with Howie Mandel.  Prior to this Band served as Ignition’s Director and Executive Producer/commercial and long-form clients.  Adam Biggs founded the company in 2000.  Congrats all the way around.

Turner Broadcasting ups Jill Shields to SVP/Marketing and Promotions, Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media (AYAKM).  In her expanded role Shields is responsible for developing and executing promotional marketing programs supporting multiplatform brands and ad sales efforts to drive revenue goals within the division, including Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and GameTap.com, as well as other digital new media properties.  Additionally, she will oversee AYAKM special events and trade marketing activities.  Based in Atlanta Shields will continue to report directly to Brenda Freeman, CMO/AYAKM.  Most recently Shields was VP/Promotions Marketing, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim.
