CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

07/19/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, July 19, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Another new bill has been introduced to Congress, this one from Rep Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) and co-presented by Rep Diane Watson (D-CA), called the Media Ownership Reform Act of 2005.  The bill includes a laundry list of re-regulation including lowering the ownership cap from the current 39% to 25% and eliminate the counting of UHF stations as 1/2 instead of a full market; striking all of the 2003 media ownership rewrites from the record entirely; bringing back the newspaper/broadcast cross ownership rule; and bringing back the fairness doctrine.  Hinchey is also the Chairman/Founder of the Congressional Future of American Media (FAM) Caucus, and introduced this bill to “fix … [a] broken media system in the United States in which only a select group of individuals get to determine what information Americans can receive via television, newspaper, radio, and other media.”  In his introduction of the bill, Hinchey said in part, “The Media Ownership Reform Act tackles the issue of media consolidation head on and implements new standards for a diverse media that will ensure Americans have access to a wide array of ideas and information.”

Tonight’s Premiere:

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

It’s no secret, Tiger Woods is good for golf. And golf ratings.  This past weekend, Tiger’s win at the British Open earned ABC a 5.0/14 in overnight ratings on Sunday’s final day of coverage, the highest rating for this event since 2000.  Oh, and by the way, Tiger won it in 2000 too.

ESPN may pick up the rights to season #2 of Mark Burnett’s reality series The Contender, according to Broadcasting & Cable.  Nothing definite provided, and nothing definite about Stallone’s involvement in a second season either.

Nick at Nite has picked up the cable syndication rights to The Jeff Foxworthy Show (distributed by Sony Pictures Television).  The show aired on ABC and then on NBC in the mid 1990s, and has a total of 41 episodes. The show joins the schedule this Saturday, airing from 10p-12m.

John O’Hurley was robbed … robbed I say! .. on Dancing with the Stars.  But now he’s getting a little of his own back – his own reality show.  In a deal with GRB Entertainment, cameras will follow O’Hurley in his day to day life.  The show has not yet been picked up by any network.

CABLEready and Great Projects Film Company have come together to to develop Decoding Opus Dei, a special that explores the truth behind Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code novel.  The special is slotted to make its debut in May 2006 – timing perfectly with the film release from Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks.  For this special, producers were granted access to Opus Dei. The special depicts the group’s slim beginnings in 1928, all the way up to the current day portrayal in Dan Brown’s bestseller, featuring archives, including texts, artifacts, and photographs; religious rituals; and buildings rarely entered by outsiders.

Sundance Channel has picked up the US rights to the BBC series I Am Not An Animal (Baby Cow Prods), a black comedy of the adventures of talking animals who lived in the lap of luxury as part of a secret experiment in a UK lab, until their were ‘freed’ by an animal rights group.  Now on the outside, they are forced to fend for themselves, and live, well, like animals.  The series will make its Sundance debut in October 2005.

CSTV‘s new weekly series Generation Next with host Tom Lemming is set to launch in time for the upcoming college football season. The show is dedicated to college recruiting and the best of the up and coming football talent across the US. The show will air on CSTV as well as stream on cstv.com, and will provide updated recruiting news, analysis, stats and video.

TiVo Inc. has launched its new interactive ad technology with campaigns from General Motors and The WB.  TiVo Inc.’s new technology enables advertisers to accomplish a slew of goals including inserting customized and branded tags in commercials; ensuring TV spots will be more visible in normal and fast forward modes; allowing TiVo users to select a tag and access more information while pausing their program to watch the expanded content, request information, or select recording opportunities. GM will use TiVo’s new customized tags for its OnStar, GMC, Chevrolet, and Saturn brands, while the WB will promote their new shows.

There is guerilla marketing, and then there’s the straight forward “talk to the stomach” marketing techniques.  Showtime has adopted the later with its latest campaign – you sign up for Showtime and they’ll send you coupons for free Haagen-Dazs ice cream – 12 coupons for 12 pints.  Yes, you need to send in three months of cable bills to prove you signed up — no bills, no ice cream.

CASTING NOTE: Monster House — The Discovery Channel series is casting BUILDERS for it’s current season. General Contractors, Carpenters, Welders, Fabricators, Prop Makers, men and women of all trades– with skills, attitude and ability to work a hard week. If you have what it takes, you could go home with a truck full of new tools.  Send your info to casting director
.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Touchstone Television has signed the writers behind ABC’s Alias to a 2-year / 7 figure development deal.  Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec will stay on as exec prods of Alias for the next two seasons, while also developing new projects for the studio.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Fred Reynolds has left the Viacom building.  Since 2001, Reynolds had been President/CEO of the Viacom Television Stations Group, and has ankled that post in favor of Pres/COO of Evercore Partners, a financial advisory company overseeing more than a billion dollars in equity and venture capital.

Shari Howard has joined TV Land & Nick at Nite as VP/Sponsored Promotions, it was announced today by Rob Pellizzi, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Promotions, TV Land & Nick at Nite, to whom she reports.  Shari will oversee the networks’ growing Sponsored Promotions group and continue to deliver brand-appropriate creative and strategic ideas to their clients, including off-the-shelf as well as custom promotions. She will also oversee all product placement and branded entertainment idea development for the networks.

ABC Radio Networks announced Mike Connolly has been named SVP/Sales. Mike will be responsible for developing and overseeing ABC Radio Networks’ advertising sales strategies to maximize revenues across all properties including ABC News Radio, ESPN Radio, syndicated talk and entertainment programming, as well as the networks’ Urban and Hispanic initiatives and 24-hour formats. Based in New York, he will oversee sales activities in all eight regional ABC Radio offices and report directly to Jim Robinson, Pres/ABC Radio Networks.

Kelly Pena has been upped to VP/Research, Disney ABC Cable Networks Group, it was announced today by Eleo Hensleigh, Chief Marketing Officer, Disney ABC Television Group, to whom she reports. Kelly is responsible for strategic, brand and marketing research for the company’s wholly-owned basic cable networks:  Disney Channel, Toon Disney, ABC Family and SOAPnet.  She is charged with generating consumer-based research insights that help shape the development of original programming, web-based content and marketing strategies for all four networks and properties.

The Weather Channel announced Liz Janneman has been named SVP/Cable Ad Sales. Based in NYC, Liz will oversee all advertising sales efforts for the cable network, reporting to Paul Iaffaldano, EVP/GM of TWC Media Solutions.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1799-Near the town of Rosetta, a soldier on Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign finds a black basalt slab inscribed with ancient writing in Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Egyptian demotic.  Because the same text was written in each of the three scripts, the Rosetta Stone became the key that unlocked the meaning of hieroglyphics

Today’s Trivia Question:
This 1940’s, film classic was considered a propaganda film by the Germans, who made it illegal to show in German Theatres during WWII.  After the war ended, only a censored version was allowed shown there.  What movie was this?   (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
