CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
07/18/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 18, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Real D, a developer/provider of digital 3D technology, has teamed-up with Cinemark USA, Inc, the movie theater exhibitor, that will result in more than 150 of Cinemark’s digital movie theaters outfitted with Real D Cinema systems. Seventeen of those newly enabled 3D projectors/screens are set to be ready for the release of Columbia Pictures’ animated feature Monster House in 3D, which will be released simultaneously in 2D, this Friday, July 21. Monster House is the second feature to be released in the Real D Cinema format; the first was Disney’s Chicken Little (2005).
If you’re thinkin’ to yourself, “self, there seem to be a lot more movies that include all or parts in 3D,” you’d be thinkin’ right. Imax will release Warner Bros’ Ant Bully next week in both 2D and Imax 3D theaters, and already bowed Superman Returns which has sections filmed in 3D. Last month Warner Bros. suggested that some scenes for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) might be filmed in 3D, per The Leaky Cauldron website. Movies to be re-released in 3D this year include Nightmare Before Christmas, Happy Feet, and Open Season. Some of the upcoming releases featuring all or a portion of the movie in 3D include:
- 2007 – Star Wars; Meet the Robinsons; Coraline; Journey 3-D; Surf’s Up; Beowulf
- 2008 – James Cameron’s Avatar
- 2009 – Godzilla, Battle Angel
MORE KIDS STUFF
The Cheetah Girls 2, a Disney Channel original Movie about a group of friends who start their own signing group, is set to premiere on the channel Friday, August 25, 8p. The TV movie is a sequel to the channel’s music-based TV movie The Cheetah Girls (2003) and stars Raven Symone (That’s So Raven), Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams and Sabrina Bryan are all reprising their roles. Additionally, Mexican recording artist/actress Belinda Peregrin also stars in the movie, in her first English-language role. The Cheetah Girls 2 movie trailer and a music video will bow on Disney Channel during the premiere of another network original movie, Read it & Weep, this Friday, July 21, 8p.
Up in Toronto this week The N begins production on the third season of its original series Instant Star. Comprised of 13 episodes, the new season will debut on the network in February 2007. Instant Star is produced in association with CTV by Epitome Pictures (Degrassi: The Next Generation), with Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn serving as Executive Producers.
Nickelodeon will air the next mini-chapter (12-minutes) of Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge, on Sunday, July 30, at 8:30p. From Nickelodeon and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, the series follows four kids over 5-months as they attempt to develop healthier lifestyles. Following the on-air update, TurboNick will stream video diary-style entries made by the kids, which give a more detailed look at their days and challenges. Additionally, a highlights reel focusing on the initiative will run at Paramount Parks from August 1-31. Figure skater Sasha Cohen has been named to the Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge advisory board.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Virgin Comics, LLC and Planetwide Games, Inc., have inked a licensing deal that includes the release of the upcoming Virgin Comics Comic Book Creator Self-Publishing software and Virgin Comics Digital Content Packs in the US and UK. Under the pact, the products will be distributed and sold via virgincomics.com and MyComicBookCreator.com. The Virgin Comics Comic Book Creator software is designed to let consumers mesh their own ideas and use Virgin Comic’s content to create personalized comics, and if they like post them to a website. Virgin Comics was established last year by Sir Richard Branson and his Virgin Group with author Deepak Chopra, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and Gotham Entertainment Group LLC, a comic book publisher based in South Asia.
In other Planetwide Games licensing news, the company has entered into a deal with Marvel Comics. Under the deal Planetwide has the right to create and publish new content booster pacts featuring Marvel’s characters, for its original Comic Book Creator software
Disney has developed a full licensing and merchandising line-up based on the new Cheetah Girls 2 movie. Disney Records will release the soundtrack to the TV movie on August 15, with additional music, video and mobile content; Disney Publishing will release a junior novel based on the sequels’ storyline; Disney Consumer Products will introduce a line of apparel and accessories at Sears as well as a Limited Too stationery line; Buena Vista Games will release a Game Boy Advance Game. Finally, three of the movie’s stars (Bailon, Bryan and Williams) will launch a 40-city Cheetah Girls concert tour in September 2006.
