Cynopsis: DIGITAL
07.16.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Hulu LLC may have gotten cold feet again when it cancelled its sale auction on Friday, but it still hasn’t said no to one suitor. In the never-ending battle over the highly successful online service, Time Warner Cable Inc. has emerged as a surprise front-runner. Hulu surprised many in the industry when it declined reported bids as high as $1 billion from DirecTV Group Inc. and the joint team of AT&T Inc. and the Chernin Group, reportedly because they wanted even more money for the site. However, according to Bloomberg, Hulu is still mulling an offer to sell a minority stake in the business to Time Warner Cable, the second-biggest U.S. MSO. That move would bring Time Warner Cable into the company as a part owner, alongside Fox, Disney and NBCUniversal.
Sonar Entertainment is launching MINIS + MOVIES, a new general entertainment paid channel on YouTube. Drawing from more than 500 Sonar Entertainment titles, content will include current and classic miniseries and two-hour made-for-television movies. The announcement was made today by Stewart Till, CEO, Sonar Entertainment. The new channel, which launched yesterday, can be accessed at http://www.youtube.com/minisandmovies and will be offered to consumers for a monthly subscription price of $1.99 per month, or discounted at 19.99 per year. Initial titles include Lonesome Dove with Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall, Merlin with Sam Neill and Isabella Rossellini, and Aftershock with Jennifer Garner. New titles will be added monthly.
As part of the ongoing wave of companion programming surrounding its final season on the air, the hit Showtime series Dexter is airing its very first live podcast from ComicCon. And it’s a good bet, it’ll kill. On July 18, series regulars Aimee Garcia and David Zayas will sit down for a special podcast interview conducted in front of an audience at the San Diego fanfest by Dexter Executive Producer Scott Reynolds. While Dexter’s cast and execs have appeared in post-episode podcasts since the start of the previous season (all available on iTunes) it’s never been done at ComicCon before. The interview will air from 2:30-3:00 PM.
And speaking of ComicCon, Saban’s legendary Power Rangers are celebrating their 20th anniversary on the air throughout the event, and though a lot of the festivities will take place on-site, Saban Brands has cooked up some digital fun as well, with a new tribute video, Power Rangers Morph Through the Years, which uses clever cutting and technology to track the colorfully costumed group, from their introduction as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to their current turbo-charged incarnation. And that’s not all. In partnership with Nickelodeon, Saban will unveil a never-before-seen clip of a future episode of Power Rangers Megaforce. This clip will go live on Saban’s Power Rangers YouTube page as the convention kicks off, on Thursday, July 18.

With more and more professionals turning to HTML5 ad code, the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s (IAB) Ad Operations Council and Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence have published the final version of “HTML5 for Digital Advertising 1.0: Guidance for Ad Designers & Creative Technologists,” which addresses inherent challenges in leveraging the ad code, including HTML5 display ad units (non-rich media), file and ad unit size, code and asset compression, in-banner video advertising and animation and ad server compatibility communication. “With cross-screen campaigns becoming the norm, it’s critical that we craft a uniform framework for HTML5 ad optimization,” said Steve Sullivan, Vice President, Ad Technology, IAB. “HTML5 technology is being rapidly adopted in the marketplace, but the code comes with its own set of issues and impediments that need to be confronted. This guidance helps break through those barriers.” The final version was unveiled yesterday at the IAB Advertising Technology Marketplace conference in New York City.
Thanks to a new deal with LiveU, Associated Press journalists can now stream real-time video content back to the news agency’s London production hub in full, broadcast-quality high definition. The AP today announced an expanded deal with the portable live video-over-cellular specialists to deploy a range of professional broadcast technology devices globally. The LiveU deal includes a backpack uplink unit with full high-definition capability, a smaller unit which can be clipped to a belt and technology to convert a laptop computer into a live video transmission unit. The small, lightweight devices allow a single professional camera operator to film and stream live footage. The investment in LiveU technology means AP can now routinely deploy more than one unit on the same story, providing a multi-camera environment and therefore a fuller picture of events as they unfold. “Live coverage has been a priority for AP since we first launched a service for broadcasters back in 2003,” said Sandy MacIntyre, director of global video at AP. “Now we have more than 200 TV stations and digital publishers who quite rightly expect us to ensure that, regardless of where news breaks, we are delivering live content within minutes.” In related news, AP also announced it’s taking a stake in Swedish technology startup firm, Bambuser, which specializes in streaming live video over smartphones.
Just in time for ComicCon, Shout Factory (http://www.shoutfactory.com/) is playing to the crowd with the release of two new Superhero apps, Superhero Time Machine and Superhero Costume Gallery. Aimed at the most discriminating comic book fans, Superhero Time Machine features more than 2,000 videos of caped faves through the ages, dating as far back as 1941. Costume Gallery enables ComicCon guests to submit photos of their own costumes as well as access others. And it can determine, in real time, which Superheroes are most represented at the convention. Both new apps debut on Thursday, July 18th.
Following the success of Angry Birds: Star Wars, Finnish outfit Rovio Entertainment announced July 15 that it’ll soon be debuting a brand new app… well, sort of. As allthingsd.com reports, Angry Birds: Star Wars II builds on a tried-and-true formula, though there’s one new hook: Rovio is partnering with Hasbro for an intriguing real-world marketing tie in: Consumers who buy Hasbro’s plush characters off the shelves can scan them with smartphone and tablet cameras and voila! The physical characters enter the world of the app.
After co-founding software and digital product development company Fanzter in 2007, Aaron LaBerge has returned to ESPN as Senior Vice President, Technology and Product Development. “I am thrilled to have him back working with us, and know that his time spent developing his own company have helped him hone his skill set… that he can now share with our employees,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Chuck Pagano, to whom LaBerge will report. LaBerge has plenty of experience with ESPN, having joined the company in 1997. In 2003, he was named Vice President, Technology and Business Operations for ESPN.com and in 2005 assumed the same position for the entire sports network.
Kelly Wallace starts as Digital Correspondent and Editor-at-Large for CNN.com, focusing on family, career and life. She will also appear regularly on both CNN and HLN. Most recently, she served as Chief Correspondent at iVillage.com.
The Hollywood Reporter has tapped former intern Daniel Reynoso as its newest Web Producer.
Call it the Sharknado effect. According to the big data marketing platform created by the global firm Kontera, (www.Kontera.com), consumption of online information, videos and social posts about Sharknado’s leading lady Tara Reid went up 177.55 percent between July 10, when the cult sensation aired on Syfy, and July 11, when the former Taradise star emerged as cable’s premiere shark-infested-tornado-fighter. The network did pretty well too, with consumers 220.49 percent more interested in Syfy than they were before the TV movie’s debut.
