07/15/08

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

FOX plans to change the way it orders pilots and organizes its development cycle. Because of the recent writers’ strike, FOX has ordered eight pilot projects this summer for potential screenings this December. Rather than keeping a traditional pilot schedule where projects are usually ordered in the spring, Fox Entertainment President, Kevin Reilly said yesterday he hopes the network will split pilots into two time periods.

Tonight’s Premieres:
TLC: Say Yes to the Dress at 8p; Rock the Reception at 830p
A&E: The Cleaner at 10p
MTV: From G’s to Gents at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Showtime Networks Inc. and The Weinstein Company (TWC) made a seven-year exclusive film distribution pact that encompasses up to 95 films which takes effect with TWC’s 2009 release schedule. The output agreement includes such titles as Nine, Inglorious Bastards and All Good Things among many others.

This September, IFC will launch a four-hour programming block called IFC AUTOMAT on Tuesday nights at 8p-12a. The block will highlight alternative programming presented uncut and uncensored including originals, shorts, web shows, anime and more. The U.S. premiere of Hell Girl on September 30 at 8p will help launch the new block. Other shows will include a new original music series From The Basement; three 15-minute IFC BLASTS, and season three of The Whitest Kids ‘U Know, which debuts in first quarter 2009.

With both the Democratic and Republican Conventions coming soon, PBS will present three hours of hi-def primetime coverage from 8-11p each night at both conventions, according to THR. Jim Lehrer of The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer will anchor and members of his news team will be present. The Democratic National Convention kicks things off on August 25-27 in Denver while the Republican National Convention convenes September 1-4 in St. Paul.

CBS’ newest comedy adopted a name change: Project Gary is now Gary Unmarried, starring  Jay Mohr, Paula Marshall, Jaime King, Ryan Malgarini and Al Madrigal and is produced by ABC Studios in association with CBS Paramount Network Television. Gary Unmarried is slated to debut on CBS September 24 at 830p.

SCI FI Channel’s season five opener of Stargate Atlantis on Friday (10p) drew in 1.05 million A25-54 viewers, 886,000 A18-49 viewers and 1.8 million total viewers.

MTV’s finale of The Real World: Hollywood last Wednesday earned a 2.4 rating among P12-34 which represents a +63% increase over last season’s finale of The Real World: Sydney. Overall, the 20th season of The Real World franchise averaged a 2.3 rating with P12-34 a +19% boost over the prior season.

Retirement Living TV (RLTV) will present a weekly magazine program focused on investigative journalism addressing key senior issues. Viewpoint with Lea Thompson will cover such topics as medical marijuana, faith healing, hospital infections and more. The series airs weekly on Fridays at noon, beginning this week.

Turner Sports will offer 28 hours of coverage, over four days, of the 137th British Open Championship on TNT, starting this Thursday at 630a. In addition, PGA.com will offer three channels via Open Championship Live, the video player with live feeds during the first two days, this Thursday and Friday.

Preseason NFL action will begin August 7 as the NFL Network airs 54 out of 65 total preseason games over 26 days, with 42 of those games presented in hi-def. The NFL Network will also air eight preseason games live including two produced by the network: New England Patriots at Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 17 at 8p and Buffalo Bills at Indianapolis Colts on August 24 at 8p.

Bonten Media Group Inc. will purchase CBS affiliate WTVF/Nashville from Landmark Communications at a reported transaction price of $205 million to $215 million. Landmark also has plans to sell its other station KLAS, the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas. Last week Landmark announced it will sell The Weather Channel to NBC Universal for $3.5 billion.

Carat was chosen as the global media services agency by Kohler Co. for its KOHLER brand. Carat will manage consumer and trade media planning and buying across all platforms in multiple markets including the Americas and EMEA.

And a reminder — Cynopsis editorial staff are all on vacation all next week which means no editions for the week.  We will be returning on Monday, July 28.  With that said, however, our Sales and Marketing staff will be available to you all week long, as usual!

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FOX’s MADtv adds four new cast members to its roster: Erica Ash, Matt Braunger, Eric Price and Lauren Pritchard for the sketch comedy show’s 14th season. The foursome joins returning cast members: Bobby Lee, Nicole Parker, Keegan-Michael Key, Crista Flanagan, Arden Myrin and Johnny Sanchez.

FOX’s Prison Break spinoff may take a cue from CBS and its CSI: Miami franchise and be more of a “brand spinoff” and a whole new series from the get-go. The original plans from executive producers Matt Olmstead and Zack Estrin was to introduce a new female character on the regular series then spin her off into her own series. The tentative working title continues to be Cherry Hill or Prison Break: Cherry Hill and it will still be set in a female prison.

Rita Cosby moves to Inside Edition as a Special Correspondent based in the New York Bureau. Most recently, Rita hosted Rita Cosby Live and Direct on MSNBC and before that hosted two shows on Fox News Channel, The Big Story Weekend Edition and Fox News Live With Rita Cosby.

Former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Trent Dilfer will be part of the ESPN team as an NFL studio analyst. Trent will participate in a number of shows for the network such as NFL Live, NFL PrimeTime, Monday Night Countdown and SportsCenter on Sunday and Monday nights during the NFL season.

The CW added three to its upcoming dramedy series Valentine, Inc. about Greek gods living on earth to create love matches, per THR. Kristoffer Polaha will play Danny or Eros; Autumn Reeser will play Phoebe, also known as the Goddess of the Oracle at Delphi; and Robert Baker will play Leo or Hercules.
