Cynopsis: DIGITAL
07/10/12

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 10, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.

Facebook will serve as the official “second-screen” for CNN’s “America’s Choice 2012” election coverage. A newly inked partnership between the two companies will result in the launch of an “I’m Voting” Facebook app, which will allow users to commit to voting in the election and endorse specific candidates and issues. In addition, CNN personalities will use the app to ask Facebook users questions and gauge sentiment during the network’s on-air, online, and mobile coverage right through the November elections. The app, which will be available in both English and Spanish, will also display the commitments by US state via an interactive map. Per the deal, Facebook and CNN say they will also conduct surveys of voting-age users in key US locations and demographics, around the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, Presidential Debates, Election Day, and other significant dates on the political calendar. For this, CNN’s editorial department will team up with Facebook’s research team to write questions and publish the results on CNN, CNN.com, and on the US Politics on Facebook page, which is the social network’s hub for 2012 campaign information.

AT&T is bringing more content and additional second-screen features to its U-verse TV apps for the web and iOS devices. The lineup of available on-demand and television programming on the service is expanding to include HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Encore, Movieplex, and Music Choice videos. In addition, AT&T is adding live feeds from FOX News Channel and FOX Business Network to U-verse.com. On the second-screen front, U-Verse customers now have the ability to link their iPad to their U-verse TV receiver via the mobile app, after which they can access real-time sports scores and information from various leagues. Other updates include the ability to turn the iPhone or iPod Touch into a remote control (this option has already been available on the iPad app) as well as share viewing information on Facebook, and now, Twitter.

E! Online has come out from under the knife with a new site-wide redesign built on what it refers to as a patent-pending “liquid platform,” which gives the site’s editorial team flexibility in how they publish and present content on the site. Specifically, when a new story, video, or photo is added or reformatted to a different size or location on the screen, all of the surrounding content shifts to flow around it seamlessly. The presentation of the content also is designed to adjust based on the user’s screen and browser. “Our biggest challenge… was to create something that could support our large volume of news, topical, and show-based content, while giving the presentation a beautiful, glossy appearance,” said John Najarion, EVP/E! Digital Media and Business Development, who had demonstrated the new design to attendees of NBCUniversal’s event at the 2012 NewFronts. Timed with the site’s re-launch, E! is also debuting a new daily web show, called Live From E!, which will serve as a green room of sorts for E! talent and their guests to discuss entertainment news, other celebrities, and trending events. The show will be live streamed every weekday at 12:30pm ET. And on the mobile front, the site has also launched a revamped mobile website and has given its mobile apps for both iOS and Android devices a facelift as well. E! Online says the apps now have the capability to carry live streams and instantly highlight breaking news.

The Washington Post is enlisting the service of video-sharing app SocialCam in its planned coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics. The paper’s on-site reporters will use the app in order to capture on-the-spot interviews and other live footage from Olympic events. And to pay service to the social nature of SocialCam, which allows users to record and share videos across multiple social networks, other attendees of the Olympics will also be able to get in on the fun. WaPo will publish select user-generated footage from the Games on a new interactive section on its website called “London Eyes.” SocialCam is available for both iOS and Android devices.

Kevin Smith’s film talk show, Spoilers, which launched as an original series on Hulu and Hulu Plus on June 4th, will be available both online and on linear television in Canada thanks to a sale to Bell Media by Alliance Films. The 10-episode series, with each episode running for 22 minutes, features the filmmaker, a special guest, and others discussing this summer’s blockbusters. Guests so far have included the likes of Jason Lee, Carrie Fisher, Robert Rodriguez, and Damon Lindelof. The first five episodes of the series were put online yesterday on SPACECAST.com. This week’s new episode, which covers The Amazing Spider-Man and has Stan Lee as the special guest, is also available. As part of the deal, Spoilers is scheduled to make its Canadian broadcast debut on Friday, July 27 at 6:30 pm ET, on SPACE, a channel focusing on science fiction, horror, and fantasy.

NBCUniversal International Television Distribution has reached a multiyear agreement with Youku to give the Chinese online video service VOD rights to a broad collection of current, library, and upcoming NBCUniversal feature films. Among the films that will be available to subscribers of Youku Premium include Schindler’s List, the Jurassic Park and The Mummy franchises, and Apollo 13. The companies say a yearly rotating selection of more than 100 classic titles from the NBCUniversal catalogue will be available. New films will arrive on Youku Premium following the theatrical release in China. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Youku has existing licensing deals from other international studios, including Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros, and 20th Century Fox.

Google‘s spring-cleaning, which was announced last fall, continues with the company’s decision to soon shut down additional products and services, including Google Video, iGoogle, and Symbian Search App, among others.

Genome from Yahoo, an online audience-buying solution that was unveiled on May 14 at Internet Week, is now live. The product combines Yahoo data (which includes user information on what it says is 76% of the US population, search data, and over 50,000 “characterizations” from Yahoo’s partnerships with more than 25 data providers) with interclick’s third-party data and the advertisers’ first-party data in order to create “multi-dimensional views of customers” in order to determine the optimal target audiences for an ad campaign. To define the best target audiences, Yahoo says Genome uses technology based on Open Segment Management (OSM), interclick’s audience valuation technology, that sifts through and manages diverse data sources. Genome also offers access to Yahoo’s premium display ad inventory, as well as those available through its partnership with AOL and Microsoft. In an interview with Adweek, Peter Foster, GM/Audience and Performance Advertising, said that many of Yahoo’s existing clients, including BMW and STP, are already creating customized audience-targeting solutions through Genome. As part of the launch, Yahoo is shutting down the interclick brand as those assets have been merged with those from Yahoo to build Genome.

As part of Chevrolet’s integrated buy with FOX Sports Media Group across the latter’s broadcast and digital properties, the automaker has been promoting its “Diamonds & Dreams” program via eight 15-second vignettes airing during FOX Saturday Baseball Game of the Week and FOXSports.com. The vignettes present highlights from the 2011 Diamonds & Dreams program, which helps local communities by refurbishing fields, donating equipment, and providing baseball clinics, among other things.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

A new eMarketer forecast indicates that online ad spending by the US media and entertainment industries will increase from $2.77 billion in 2012 to $4.34 billion by 2016, reflecting the consumer shift toward the internet for news and entertainment content. However, it’s not necessarily all good news for both sectors. eMarketer projects digital ad spending in the entertainment sector to decline this year, but is expected to rebound. Additionally, it predicts flat spending by traditional media outlets to result in average growth for the media sector and lower-than-average growth for the entertainment sector during the forecast period. eMarketer says this partly because the media sector still benefits from its ability to place free or lower-cost “house ads” on its highly visible online properties. And within the entertainment sector, eMarketer says changing marketing dynamics and challenges from lower sales and online competition will force it to slow down this year as it looks at new revenue models. In the end, eMarketer believes both will bounce back, citing how some media companies (Google, Gannett) are beginning to use “multipronged approaches” to reach consumers, and the expectation that a better economy and streamlined content distribution deals, among other things, will give the entertainment sector a boost.

Last week, on his public Facebook page, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said monthly viewing on Netflix exceeded 1 billion hours for the first time ever in June 2012 (this number is on a global basis). With that statistic in mind, Richard Greenfield of BTIG Research calculated some interesting numbers regarding content consumption on the online video service:

  • Assuming that “exceeded 1 billion” means 1.050 billion hours of streaming, and that over 90% of the consumption occurred in the US (or 955 million hours), and with the expectation that Netflix’s domestic streaming subscribers will total 24 million for June 2012, Greenfield says this means the average Netflix subscriber watched 2,388 minutes of content in June. That is roughly 80 minutes per subscriber per day, or 40 hours per subscriber per month.
  • When comparing these numbers to the broadcast and cable viewership data that BTIG Research analyzed in October 2011 (which likely had higher viewership numbers than June 2011, for which numbers haven’t been released yet), Greenfield says Netflix would have been the seventh most-watched network among broadcast and cable networks, and second among only cable networks (above ESPN, below Disney Channel).
  • Greenfield does note that Netflix is a seasonal business, just like TV, in that it benefits when traditional TV-viewing is at its weakest (in the summer/winter).

NBC News’ Dateline is planning to launch Dateline Chatline, an interactive web app that will allow viewers to interact with each other, the show’s anchor Lester Holt, correspondents, and production stuff, all in order to discuss what’s airing on the primetime show in real-time. All viewer comments will live on the site for others to see, follow, and join. Viewers will also receive questions and be encouraged to provide feedback regarding individual stories on the broadcast. Scheduled to go live on Friday, July 13 at 9pm ET, NBC News says the Dateline Chatline will be accessible on all digital platforms, including tablets, and will also connect users to the show’s presence on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, GetGlue, and DatelineNBC.com.

The new HGTV Shelf iPad app offers a mix of free and paid original content that cover popular home-improvement topics from sites such as HGTV.com, HGTVRemodels.com, DIYNetwork.com, and FrontDoor.com. Each issue comes with an array of articles, videos, and photos to help with various projects around the house. Launched last week, three new issues are currently available for download: Fast Fixes Outdoors ($0.99) for do-it-yourself tips, Closet Cases (free) for home organization, and HGTV Color Guide (free) for finding the right hue.

Both will assume the official title of VP/Program Marketing and Advertising, at which they will oversee the strategic development of multiplatform marketing programs as well as manage all marketing strategy and consumer advertising for Showtime’s entertainment programming, with a focus on original series and specials. In addition, they will continue to oversee internal and external creative along with digital agencies that execute ad creative for the network, including television, print, radio, online, mobile, tablet, and outdoor campaigns. Both will report to Donald Buckley, EVP/Program Marketing, Media, Promotions, and Digital Services, at Showtime Networks.

Premier Retail Networks (PRN), a Technicolor company and a provider of digital place-based media services, has appointed Martin J. Fry as its new Chief Operating Officer. At the new position, he will be responsible for PRN’s field solutions, technology group, technical account management, network operations, and media solutions.

Starz has promoted Scott D. Macdonald to the position of Chief Financial Officer. He was previously EVP/Finance, Accounting, and Treasurer for the multichannel programming company. He is based in Colorado.
