Cynopsis: Kids!

1/09/07

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Hearst Magazines Digital Media has acquired eCRUSH.com, Inc., a teen and young adult online community.  Hearst Magazines Digital Media is a unit of Hearst Magazines, publishers of CosmoGIRL!, Seventeen and Teen magazines.  Under the terms of the agreement, Hearst has purchased a number of youth-oriented online destinations operated by eCRUSH.com, Inc., including: eCRUSH, eSPIN and HighSchoolStyleBoard.  Later this month Hearst will launch MyPromShopper.com, a prom-planning site that features editorial from its teen magazines and various tools, such as a gown finder, as well as a prom notebook and polls, which can be published on third-party social networks websites (e.g. MySpace, Facebook).  In other Hearst magazine news, in support of its new teen online digital strategy, the company will launch websites for CosmoGIRL!, Seventeen and Teen magazine next month.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Set for release this Friday, January 12, 2007 the partially animated movie Arthur and the Invisibles (titled Arthur and the Minimoys outside of the US) has been deemed ineligible for Oscar contention in the best animated feature category.  The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has disqualified the movie because it does not contain the requisite amount of animation, 75% of the movie’s total running time.  That leaves a total of 15 animated feature films vying for Oscar, but reduces the number of possible nominees to three.  That said, Director Luc Besson is planning to make two additional movies, all of which are based on the kid’s book series, extending the property into a movie trilogy, per Variety.  The second movie, Arthur and the Vengeance of Malthazar will be produced in for 2009, followed by Arthur and the War of Two Worlds for 2010.

Raven Moon Entertainment has unveiled plans to makes its way into the movie business this year with Raven Animation, Inc., a subsidiary of Raven Moon Entertainment, Inc.  The first animated feature will be Gina D & The Transistors Sisters  in Search of the Golden Record (Rated G). Rave Moon has completed the CD soundtrack from the movie, which features both original songs and 10 classic Diana Ross and the Supremes songs.  Additionally, Raven Moon has completed two animated TV pilots, Bobo Tales and Ted TV.  The company is expected to ink a distribution deal for both series this week, stay tuned for the announcement later this month.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Terri and Bindi Irwin, the widow and 8-year-old daughter of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, are headed to the US where Bindi will make a number of appearances including speaking at the National Press Club lunch on Friday, January 19 as well as a number of talk shows where they will talk about Irwin’s legacy and wildlife and nature conservation.  Bindi will star in Bindi, the Jungle Girl (26 x 30′) a new series for Discovery Kids.

Some more information about the new qubo 24/7 digital channel that bowed yesterday, across ION Media Networks’ television station group.  The digital channel launched with a rolling four-hour block of kids shows that will expand to six-hours in the near future.  In addition to the shows that currently run on the qubo programming block, the new qubo digital channel lineup features eight titles including, Pecola (from Nelvana), Boo! (from NBC Universal) and Theodore Tugboat (from Classic Media).  The new channel also features regular interstitial content offering positive messages for kids and parents, including Scholastic’s “Reading… Everybody’s Doing It!”.  A Spanish-language version of qubo’s website (www.qubo.com) was launched in December 2006, with further platform launches to include an enhanced interactive website and VOD services.

TuTv is launching HI!, a new show on its youth-targeted lifestyle and music channel, Telehit. A variety magazine show, Hi! features five different segments each airing at 6p on a specific day of the week, which will be hosted by Telehit’s host Amanda.  Every Monday, the Kiss Connection dating game show airs, followed by Sustancia Activa (Active Substance) on Tuesday, Chicas Veneno (Poison Girls) on Wednesday, Magazine on Thursday, and Top Telehit rounding out the week on Friday.

PBS Kids is set to launch a second season of the animated preschool series Franny’s Feet (13 x 30′), on February 3, 2007 (check local listings for times).  Franny’s Feet, produced by Decode Entertainment in association with Thirteen/WNET New York, debuted in the US on PBS KIDS in summer 2006.  Playskool, the worldwide master toy and game licensee for the property, will introduce the first Franny’s Feet toys and games in 2008.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cartoon Network Enterprises has teamed with FAB/Starpoint, a manufacturer of bags and stationery, to create a line of products based on Cartoon Network’s animated series, Ben 10.  Under a multi-year agreement FAB/Starpoint will produced backpacks, accessories, school supplies, watches and clocks that will are slated to be available at retail for back-to-school 2007.  This new softlines pact follows last month’s announcement of softline partnerships with Jay Franco (home furnishings), Accessory Innovations (headwear) and American marketing Enterprises, Inc. Genius Products (GNPI), a DVD producer/licensor/distributor, and The Weinstein Company (TWC) have inked a long-term pact with Entertainment Rights and Classic Media for the distribution, co-production and co-financing of a range of home video and videogame productions for the family, kids and teen markets.  Under the terms of the deal GNPI has the exclusive North American distribution rights for home video and certain digital media distribution rights for Classic and ER’s catalogs (e.g. Lassie, Fat Albert, Postman Pat, Rupert Bear, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and VeggieTales), as well as for ER, Classic and TWC new co-productions and co-financed slate of kid-targeted new animated productions (e.g. The Lone Ranger, Gumby, and She Ra and Kung Fu Magoo).  In addition, GNPI will have North American distribution rights for a slate of up to 12 new videogames it will produce and finance based on titles in the ER and Filmation catalogs.  ER will handle the international distribution of home video and co-productions.  Eric Robinson, VP/Production and Development, TWC will manage the productions.  ER is in the process of acquiring Classic Media.
