Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Time Warner Cable has struck a deal with Roku to launch its TWC TV app on Roku streaming players in the US. TWC TV is the cable provider’s authenticated service that allows its customers to access live channels on a variety of connected devices, as long as they’re subscribing to those channels as part of their cable package. Expected to launch on Roku devices this quarter, the TWC TV app for Roku will feature up to 300 live TV channels. This is first time that TWC TV will be available on a consumer device connected to a TV set. Roku devices on which TWC TV will be available are as follows: All Roku 2 players; Roku HD (model 2500R), Roku LT, and the Roku Streaming Stick. The app is currently available for iOS devices, select Android smartphones and tablets, and online.

Netflix has signed a licensing deal with Warner Bros. Television Group to bring prior seasons of shows from the 2012-2013 TV season exclusively to Netflix streaming subscribers in the US. These shows include Revolution (NBC), The Following (which premieres on FOX this January 24), Political Animals (USA), Longmire (A&E), and 666 Park Avenue (ABC), all of which will be available on Netflix next year. In addition to the 2012-2013 crop of shows, the deal includes serialized dramas such as Chuck (NBC), Fringe (FOX), and The West Wing (NBC). The agreement covers a current slate of eight Warner Bros. shows as well as potential future shows. Per the deal, the shows can be made available via traditional syndication windows, electronic sell-through services, and/or on a catch-up basis for recently aired episodes.

Last October, Yahoo and CBS announced a cross-screen partnership that would link Yahoo’s celebrity news site, omg!, with CBS’ nightly entertainment news show, The Insider. The partnership went into effect yesterday as Yahoo launched a redesigned omg! site and CBS premiered the re-branded TV show omg! Insider. Working together, the site and the TV show will look to bring viewers non-stop coverage of celebrity news and entertainment. The refreshed omg! website is offering more breaking news, video content (some of which is from the TV show), and an enhanced mobile experience. In addition, Yahoo’s second-screen app IntoNow now syncs up with the omg! Insider TV show in order to offer viewers additional content from and about the topics covered on the show.

Bravo Media has launched its first ever connected TV app. Features include videos (with the ability to search for content as well as create customized play lists based on a variety of topics, from interests to favorite “Bravolebrities”), a show schedule, episode descriptions, photo galleries, polls and games, celebrity profiles, and social sharing capabilities, among others. Bravo says its also offering advertisers the ability to sponsor and engage with users via branded-bottom third snipes, traditional pre-rolls, and embedded logo placements. The network says it’s also offering “more customized experiences with integration of branded content curated to align with a brand’s messaging.” Currently, the connected TV app is available on Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-ray players, Yahoo Widgets, and Google TV.

Here’s what’s new on Acorn TV, the curator and streaming service of British programming for North American audiences: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, starring Tony-nominee Essie Davis (Girl with a Pearl Earring), and the classic British sitcom A Fine Romance, starring Dame Judi Dench and her husband Michael Williams.

As part of a major re-branding of its digital media business, US broadcaster LIN Media has renamed RMM Online Advertising as LIN Digital and has assembled it under the newly created “LIN Digital Media” brand. Under LIN Digital Media, the broadcaster will offer its full suite of digital media and advertising services, including LIN Mobile, Nami Media, and the aforementioned LIN Digital. “Our new brand identity combines the size and legacy of LIN Media with our digital expertise, premium comScore-ranked network of publishers, and proprietary technology that enable us to deliver highly targeted and effective marketing solutions to our clients,” said Jamie Elden, LIN Digital’s SVP/Sales, in a statement that announced the name change and reorganization.


Cisco has unveiled Videoscape Unity, a new and expanded version of the Videoscape video services delivery platform that integrates the assets and business model of NDS, a video software and content security solutions provider that Cisco acquired in 2012. The new platform is designed to enable operators and media companies to deliver multiscreen video and TV services to consumers. These include a cloud-based multiscreen DVR (so consumers can watch, record, and play back content anywhere from any screen); a “Video Everywhere” capability (that consists of unified search, discovery, and viewing functions to allow consumers to watch live and on-demand content from any connected device, regardless of location); and the ability to distribute video content and metadata, and offer a unified user experience, to any IP-connected device inside the home via Cisco’s Connected Video Gateway.

Samsung has selected Red Bee Media to provide it with rich metadata services for Samsung Smart TVs across 13 European countries. The multiyear deal calls for Red Bee Media to provide rich electronic program guide (EPG) content, including localized program descriptions and images, to power content discovery for over 2,500 channels in 23 languages across the 13 European countries the deal covers.


16% of US “television households” own tablets, and 56% of US mobile subscribers own smartphones, according to Nielsen’s latest US Consumer Usage report. Within the US smartphone market, Android leads with a 52% market share among operating systems, followed by iOS (35%), Blackberry (7%), and others (6%). In addition, Nielsen reports that among Americans within TV homes, 86% own a DVD player, 75% own “HD-capable” TVs, 56% own a gaming console, 52% own a digital cable box, 47% own a DVR, 33% subscribe to satellite, and 4% own an internet-connectable TV.


ActiveVideo Networks has launched the “CloudTV Access” developer program, an initiative focused on making it easier for developers to build and deploy HTML5-based apps on CloudTV-enabled connected TVs, set-top boxes, and other devices. Using the CloudTV platform’s “write-once, deploy-anywhere” set-up, CloudTV Access seeks to give manufacturers, service providers, and operators the ability to quickly get apps to market (the company claims the program cuts app time-to-market by as much as 80%). The program is also specifically designed for HTML5 web developers, as ActiveVideo offers CloudTV tools and resources to help them make the transition to TV and create cross-platform apps/experiences. Here’s how the two-stage program works, per ActiveVideo: It begins with consultation sessions between the developer and the ActiveVideo development team. Developers also get access to tools and services, APIs and JavaScript libraries, and help with creating an initial app as specified by the developer. Those who continue with the program then receive priority access to new releases and tools, “preferred roles” at ActiveVideo developer events, access to the CloudTV Premium Development Kit, and the opportunity for their apps to be showcased at trade shows and other public events.


Independent digital content studio Vuguru has hired former Lionsgate Home Entertainment consultant Shelly Williams in the role of VP/Marketing. Reporting directly to Scott Nocas, Vuguru’s Head of Distribution and Marketing, Williams will be responsible for developing marketing strategies for new title/show launches as well as overseeing all of Vuguru’s branding efforts and marketing. She will also be tasked with building viewership through marketing partnerships. That’s not the only new hire at Vuguru, as Sophie Cassidy has joined the company as its new Director/Development. She wills support the development process from the point of acquisition to through post-production. She will regularly interact with above-the-line and below-the-line talent involved with each project at Vuguru. She’s also tasked with working closely with the studio’s production team to ensure continuity and communication across all projects.

Mobile ad company Jumptap has named former Yahoo sales executive and Lerer Ventures Executive-in-Residence Adam Chandler as its new SVP/Sales. He will be based in the company’s NYC office.
