Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, January 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Unable to come to any sort of interim agreement with dick clark productions and/or NBC, and threatened with a significant lack of star power, the Golden Globe Awards telecast scheduled for Sunday night will be replaced with a one hour news conference held in Beverly Hills by the Hollywood Foreign Press announcing the winners in the 25 film and television award categories. The news conference will be covered by NBC News.  The People’s Choice Awards tonight on CBS will be presented in a “magazine format” instead of the usual red carpet/presenter/winner format. The SAG Awards, scheduled for January 27, signed an interim agreement with the writers’ guild, so it will proceed on schedule. The next big question – the Oscars in late February.

Tonight’s Premieres:
The CW: One Tree Hill at 8p
MNT: Street Patrol at 8p
Discovery Channel: Dirty Jobs at 9p
SCI FI Channel: Guinea Pig at 9p
GSN: How Much Is Enough? at 9p
A&E Network: Parking Wars at 10p
MTV: Life of Ryan at 10p and Rob and Big at 1030p

~ MORE STUFF ~

The WGA and United Artists Films formed an independent agreement which allows WGA members to work with United Artists while the strike continues. Specific details of the agreement were not disclosed, yet according to the WGA statement, the comprehensive deal includes issues important to writers, including new media. This new agreement only involves United Artists Films and not Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. a shareholder of United Artists Entertainment.

Showtime’s drama series Dexter about an appealing forensics expert who happens to also be a serial killer will air on CBS starting February 17 at 10p. CBS will air the 12-episode first season of Dexter, which will be edited for network television, on twelve consecutive Sundays. The series recently completed its second season on Showtime. This marks the first time a full season of a premium cable network series makes the transition to network television.

Food Network adds a new 30m show to its Saturday morning line-up as Down Home with the Neelys begins February 2 at 11a. Gina and Pat Neely own and operate several BBQ restaurants in Tennessee and their new show has them cooking up recipes for viewers in their own kitchen in Memphis.

Mighty Oak Entertainment, owner and executive producer of the series Whacked Out Sports, has cleared the syndicated weekly clip series for a third year in 75% of the U.S. including 25 of the top 30 markets. The 30m weekend show has been picked up by station groups including FOX, Gannett, Raycom, Sinclair and NBC.

Lifetime’s launch of its new series How to Look Good Naked last Friday (9p) attracted 1.6 million total viewers. As for demos, the premiere episode delivered 868,000 A18-49 viewers, 449,000 A18-34 viewers and 344,000 W18-34 viewers.

Saturday’s primetime back-to-back Republican and Democratic debates from ABC News/Facebook/WMUR-TV averaged together 8.36 million total viewers and posted a 2.4 rating among A25-54 viewers.

Ron Bergamo, General Manager of KAZT (AZ-TV) and Londen Media Group partner, died Sunday in a car crash in Prescott Valley, Arizona. He was 64. Ron’s wife Jane was seriously injured and is in the ICU at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. Services for Ron are pending.

Echo Bridge Entertainment, the independent film distribution company that owns or controls a library of more than 3,500 titles, has a new financing plan with JP Morgan Securities. This new arrangement will allow the company to have an aggressive acquisitions strategy for this year and beyond.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The Weather Channel expanded Forecast Earth, the network’s weekly program on climate change to a full hour. The program airs Saturdays at 5p and also added Natalie Allen as anchor and several new regular contributors. The online component of Forecast Earth has expanded as well with contributions from columnist Don Wilmott, a content partnership with LifeWire focused on sustainability and a new Green Box video player.

Variety reports ABC will be bringing back The Mole this spring/summer and production and casting are now underway, produced by Stone & Co. Entertainment. Who will host? No answer to that question yet. Certainly not Anderson Cooper again (tho that is a shame), and Ahmad Rashad who hosted the celebrity edition in 2004, has not been asked to return.

Casting Call: New crime-based cable program Animal Witness, which relates how animals have been used to crack complex cases, is looking for a host. The ideal candidate must have current or past experience in an animal and/or law enforcement/forensics related field, specifically as a police canine specialist or an animal forensics lab technician. This is a non-union job. Interested applicants should submit contact information, photo and relevant job experience to
.

Casting Call: The CW, Macy’s and the Warner Bros. Television Group are sponsoring an Ultimate Fan Weekend in Wilmington tied in with the series One Tree Hill. Eight fans of the show will win a walk-on role and spend a weekend meeting the stars, watching the show in production and attending a charity event. Applicants can enter until February 4 by attending a regional casting call at seven Macy’s stores nationwide or uploading an audition video at www.cwtv.com/macys .
