~ NATPE 2013 ~

Hello from NATPE, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Day one was a non-stop of fest of networking and dealmaking at the Fontainebleu lobby, Bleau Bar, the cabanas, and the suites at the Chateau, Versailles, Sorrento, Tresor and the market floor. As early as 10am, attendees were chugging their champagne and mini apple danishes as they waited in the not-very-long lines at the Tresor elevators. Not a bad way to start the day.

Highlights from the day included:

  • Updates on The Queen Latifah Show from Sony Pictures Television’s John Weiser, President of Distribution, and Holly Jacobs, Executive Vice President, Reality and Syndication Programming on “Queen Latifah is an exceptional brand,” says Jacobs, “and the show will be a premium blend of multi-topic segments covering celebrity, human interest and more from a woman who has fans ranging from 8-80 years old.” Although Latifah had a talk show that aired from 1999-2001, “right now is really the right time for her,” says Weiser. “And there’s a line out the door for advertisers.” As for the new season of the dreamy and influential Dr. Oz, Jacobs predicts “more investigative pieces that will continue his tradition of changing legislation that changes lives.”
  • A new promotional angle for The Arsenio Hall Show. Already cleared in 95% of the country, “we plan on keeping stations very excited about the show,” says Joe DeSalvo, President, CBS Television Distribution. “We’re producing tongue-in cheek digital shorts that will run twice a month, beginning in February. They’re written by Paul Raff, a former writer for Jimmy Kimmel. Then we’ll start running personalized promos in July and August.”
  • A new direction from Allen DeBevoise, Chairman, CEO and Co-founder of Machinima: “We’re planning on adding more premium programming,” says DeBevoise, whose gaming network counts 262 million unique users. With a sweet spot of males from 12-34, Machinima has come to NATPE to help networks capture this elusive audience and drive ratings through a variety of advertising and promotion methods including strategic partnerships and content creation. “We can learn from the TV experts and they can learn from us,” says DeBevoise, whose latest offering is “Zoochosis,” which follows abnormal clients in a shrink’s office (think: a bride’s panic attack during her wedding reception. Fun!). “It’s no longer an either/or proposition.”
~Other NATPE News~

Tonight a lot of the domestic syndicators are having private dinners but the rest of the crowd is attending NATPE’s opening night party, poolside at the Fountainebleu. I can hear it from my room, and it’s rockin’. Time to go join the fun.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS gave a pilot order to a medical-themed drama about America’s top doctor titled The Surgeon General.  CBS Television Studios is producing with Samuel Baum on board to write and serve as EP.

The CW ordered a handful of pilots including one based on the classic UK children’s series The Tomorrow People from Greg Berlanti and Julie Plec.  This drama is about young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution as they possess special powers such as telepathy.  Berlanti and Plec will serve as EPs.  The CW also ordered the drama pilot titled Blink from writer Vera Herbert and executive producer David Marshall Grant.  This drama is described as a humorous take on a family whose lives are changed when the patriarch has a car accident resulting in a coma like syndrome where he cannot speak or move but can see and hear everything.  This character narrates the drama and has fantasy sequences from his mind.  Thirdly, The CW may resurrect the Wonder Woman prequel Amazon this pilot season.  The network is apparently holding a marker for Amazon with the project still in contention for fall 2013-14, midseason or beyond.

H1 Unlimited and Discovery Studios have a docu-series in the works dubbed the Air National Guard H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Series.  The series will have unprecedented behind the scenes access to the world’s fastest boats.

Former West Wing star Allison Janney was cast in Chuck Lorre’s comedy pilot Mom for CBS starring Anna Faris as a newly sober single mom who tries to pull her life back together in the Napa Valley.  The multi-camera project is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions with Warner Bros. Television, where Lorre has a long-term deal.
