Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 29, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The LA Dodgers ownership group officially announced the anticipated creation of American Media Productions which will launch a new network dedicated to the team called SportsNet LA. In a 25-year deal estimated to be valued between $7-$8 billion, Time Warner Cable agreed to be SportsNet LA’s charter distributor, and will carry the new network for its customers throughout Southern California and Hawaii under a long-term affiliation deal the begins in 2014. TWC will also serve as the exclusive advertising and affiliate sales agent for the new network and will have certain branding and programming rights with respect to the network. TWC will also provide certain non-game production and technical services to AMP.
“We concluded last year that the best way to give our fans what they want – more content and more Dodger baseball – was to launch our own network,” said Mark Walter, Chairman of the Los Angeles Dodgers. “The creation of AMP will provide substantial financial resources over the coming years for the Dodgers to build on their storied legacy and bring a World Championship home to Los Angeles. Just as we are actively transforming the team and the stadium, we want the Dodgers to be exhibited on the very best sports network in the country – one that will provide an unrivaled fan experience.”
U.S. Figure Skating inked two media rights deals that will deliver coverage of figure skating in the United States through the end of the 2017-18 Olympic season. The first deal is a four-year extension of its broadcast rights agreement with NBC, as the rights would have expired following the 2014 US Championships. The second deal is with icenetwork.com, which acquired all U.S. media rights for International Skating Union (ISU) events through the 2017-18 season. Icenetwork.com is a wholly-owned subsidiary of U.S. Figure Skating, and it operated and managed by MLBAM. Approximately 20 hours of icenetwork.com’s ISU figure skating rights will be shown on NBC annually through the deal, including the World Championships in primetime during non-Olympic years, and the ISU Grand Prix Series.
YES Network locked in Yankees play-by-play voice Michael Kay to a multi-year extension with the network that will keep him behind the microphone for the foreseeable future. Kay has earned 21 Emmy nominations and 3 Emmy wins while at YES, and will also continue hosting YES’ Center Stage with Michael Kay show, as well as other shows and specials on the network.
NFL Films’ Road to the Super Bowl will hit CBS on Sunday at 11a before the big game, detailing how the Ravens and 49ers made it to Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans.
ESPN Films lined up the next two films of the company’s 30 for 30 film series. The first production, Survive and Advance, comes from director Jonathan Hock and will debut on March 17. The film examines Jim Valvano and his famed ’82-’83 season of the North Carolina State Wolfpack. The second project, Elway to Marino, will air on April 23, and focus on the 1983 NFL Draft that produced the legendary quarterbacks.
Donovan McNabb is joining NBC Sports Radio, where he will serve as an NFL lead analyst starting this week. Dial Global and the NBC Sports Group announced the deal. In addition, McNabb will be a part of a soon-to-be-announced daily Monday-Friday talk show that will debut April 1, 2013 as the network expands its programming lineup.
LMNO Prods. is partnering with Lakers’ player Metta World Peace and his media company to develop a new celebrity prank series that will feature athletes involved in hidden camera stunts. Deadline reports that the series will also incorporate will the athlete’s family members, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends and fans.
Canada’s Super Channel entered a deal with Showtime Sports that makes Super Channel the home of Showtime’s boxing events in Canada. Under this agreement Super Channel will air live Showtime Championship Boxing and ShoBox: The New Generation telecasts through 2014.
NHL Network and NHL.com will offer coverage of the annual Wayne Gretzky’s Fantasy Camp today at 4p. EJ Hradek reports onsite for Cisco NHL Live, which will have an extra hour added to the show.
Comcast SportsNet Chicago notched another ratings record, drawing a 6.31 household score for its live coverage of the Red Wings/Blackhawks game Sunday night, according to Nielsen. Comcast SportsNet drew around 220,000 households for the entire game and posted an 8.09 “peak” rating during the 8:15 PM quarter-hour.
Travel Channel hosts a one-hour special Super Bowl Tailgate Takeover hosted by Adam Richman on Wednesday at 9p that features “the most incredible tailgate experiences leading up to Super Bowl XLVII.” The special will give viewers a peak at the network’s upcoming original series, Tailgate Takeover, which will premiere this summer.

This week, CBSSports.com is running three shows each day from New Orleans including Eye on Football: Live from Jackson Square, Eye on Football: Road to the Draft, and Eye on Football: Best of Radio Row.
