A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM DEBMAR-MERCURY
MEET THE #1 SHOW ON TBS
IN A18-49 and A25-54 … Tyler Perry’s MEET THE BROWNS Cleared in 75% of the US and 9 of the top 10 markets! AVAILABLE FALL 2010 Contact your Debmar-Mercury Representative today Cynopsis: Classified Advantage Good morning – it’s Tuesday, January 26, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies. A wonderful woman suggested adding Twitter to my job searching strategy. I was unsure but she wrote me back explaining how it can be of assistance. She convinced me and here is what I found. Twitter.com makes it possible to learn about a company’s culture by following employees, making connections with company employees, learn about employment opportunities, allow others to see your resume and cover letters, and even post a “twitter resume.” Can all this get you a job? It can’t hurt your chances so if you are looking for a job, you should be doing it. I used David Letterman for my search on www.twellow.com and on the first page I was able to find and follow 3 Letterman writers and Paul Shaffer. I clicked on the follow button for Eric Stangel, Head Writer and Executive Producer for the show. In reading his tweets, I already know there is a big sports culture at Late Night. Good to know if I was trying to get a job there. Now that I am following Eric Stangel, I can ask questions or comment on his tweets. Perhaps we could discuss the Giants but he seems to be a San Diego Charger fan. But as I read more of his tweets, the more ideas I will have on how to connect. There are many Twitter applications that can help you find out who is hiring and where, some of the ones that may help are, www.tweetmyjobs.com , www.TwtJobs.com and www.TwitterJobSearch.com . All of these sites will help you find a job and some will email you any job opening within parameters that you have defined. As with the job hunting, there are many Twitter applications that will post your resume for others to read. One of the easiest is www.Twitres.com . Not only do you post your resume for others to read, but people can comment on your resume, perhaps making it better. I just read a resume where a candidate listed her education before her experience. I suggested that potential employers are more interested in her experience and should be listed before her education. People can also recommend, download, email or otherwise share your resume with others. The most complicated part of this process is listing what is known as a Twitter Resume. This is not your resume, but a 140 character ReTweeted (encouraging others to post your information) message that explains what job you want, where you want it, a link to your full resume and hashtags (searchable words) that allow your resume to be found in searches. Whew. Start your message with RT – Retweet. Hopefully your contacts will repost your message so more people will see it. Hashtag your name – #JohnCox, this makes my name more easily found when searched. List job title and location desired. List your tiny url leading to your resume and perhaps portfolio. Finally, hashtag any words used as search terms, such as resume, job title and location. Example: RT #JohnCox seeks writing position for comedy show CA. http://bit.ly/uPie@TweetMyResume #comedywriter #CA #resume You have to repost your Twitter resume about once a week to keep it in circulation. Twitter is new and there are many ways of using this service, most of which haven’t been developed or even thought of yet. Feel free to experiment, it’s new to all of us. Next week: Virtual Job Fairs We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] . When my friend, Jeff, called I immediately sensed the frustration in his voice. His wife had recently transferred to a new city and he, the trailing spouse, was in the job market for the first time in 15 years. “I’ve sent out more than 75 resumes,” he wailed, “and I haven’t got a single interview!” “You have to be patient,” I said, trying to be encouraging. “On average, only one interview is granted for every 245 resumes.” “But I’m better than average!” he insisted. And he clearly was. Jeff had been a successful department head with impressive credentials. He was confident and charismatic. His personality would fill up the room. I asked him to send me his resume. But when I read it, the Jeff I knew and respected was nowhere to be found. His resume was flat, ordinary and — unlike Jeff — didn’t stand out from the crowd. That spells trouble when you’re competing with 245 others for someone’s time and attention. It’s no wonder that employers spend only 10 to 20 seconds reading (i.e. skimming) a typical resume. Fortunately, Jeff’s resume didn’t need a major overhaul. Thanks to a minor “tune up,” he’s had five interviews and is weighing two offers (both higher than his previous salary). Listed below are a few, simple tips to get the highest possible performance out of your resume. Avoid pet peeves that turn off readers. Focus on what matters most. Customize for the job you’re seeking. Make your resume easy to read (and scan). Use action-oriented verbs. ~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers Answered by Joel Garfinkle The information you provide is absolutely amazing and helpful. THANK YOU! My question is how does one follow up with the HR Dept. when applying to positions online? I find it extremely difficult to reach out to companies to express further interest that I believe would separate me from others applying to the position. Here’s the best way to follow-up and catch their attention online: After you’ve applied online, send your cover letter and resume via snail mail. This will help you get noticed because few applicants think to send hard copies, as well. Then send an email to follow-up on the job. Do this about 3-4 days after you have applied. Make every effort to find the person who should receive the email. It could be a person in HR, a recruiter or the manager you would be working for. You may have to do some digging and make some phone calls. But your effort will be well worth it. Once you’ve identified this person, inform them you’ve applied for the position, ask what the next steps are and when you can arrange for an interview. Be sure to include your phone number. Finally, call the person in charge of the application process (HR, recruiter or manager). Inform them of your application and when it was sent in. Grab their attention very quickly by mentioning one or two powerful reasons why you’re the right person for this job. Are there other sites I should be posting on other than LinkedIn, Facebook and tweeter?
