Writer/producer/creator Russell T Davies (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who, Torchwood) is teaming up with FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and BBC Cymru Wales for a new kid-targeted action/adventure drama, Aliens Vs Wizards (26×30), for CBBC. Created by Davies and Phil Ford (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who), Aliens Vs Wizards will be produced by BBC Cymru Wales in association with FME’s Kids & Family Entertainment division. FME will also manage worldwide distribution of the series (excluding the UK), as well as the brand licensing, home entertainment and other ancillary rights including publishing. Slated to premiere on CBBC (UK) in fall 2012, Aliens Vs Wizards follows the adventures of 16-year-olds Tom (secretly a Wizard) and Benny (a science genius) in their battle to protect the Earth from aliens, the Nekross, searching our planet for magic aliens who will stop at nothing to find that magic.

The Wiggles and Ruckus Media Group ink a licensing deal, under which Ruckus will develop a series of Wiggles mobile interactive storybooks apps for iOS and Android mobile devices and tablets. The first three titles are slated for release worldwide with English language distribution via the iTunes App store in April 2012, followed by additional Apple and Android releases later in the year. Ruckus is developing kid-targeted interactive storybooks that will feature The Wiggles’ music, video and educational activities, which will be strategically placed throughout the narrative of the stories, and encourage kids to “Wiggle and Learn.”
UK-based Bulldog Licensing has been tapped to represent the BBC‘s mixed live-action/puppet preschool series Mr Bloom’s Nursery, which airs on both CBeebies and BBC2. Mr Bloom’s Nursery aims to encourage preschoolers to learn about life through the wonders of gardening. Targeting the toy and publishing sectors first, Bulldog will also launch a major collection of merchandise for Mr Bloom’s Nursery in other categories featuring apparel, gardening equipment and homewares lines.
Bazooka Candy Brands (www.bazookajoe.com) pulls its Juicy Drop candy line in a new way with the launch of Juicy Drop Taffy. Building off of the Juicy Drop brand’s two-in-one candy experience the new Juicy Drop Taffy candy will allow kids to take control of the own flavor intensity of their candy. Each Juicy Drop Taffy pouch ($1.49) will contain eight pieces of taffy along with a Juicy Drop sour gel applicator, which will let consumers determine the taste. The candy will debut in two flavors, Blue Rebel and Knock Out Punch, and will be available nationally in March 2012.
Me-TV, Memorable Entertainment Television, unveiled at NATPE it plans to launch a family-targeted weekend morning animated programming block in Q2 2012. Me-TV (www.metvnetwork.com) has entered into a deal with Broadcast Partners and its Classic Media Library, to feature animated series including Gumby, Mr. Magoo, He-Man and She-Ra, to its new weekend block. Me-TV affiliates will have the option to carry additional programming including the live-action series Timmy and Lassie Hour and The Lone Ranger, as well as the animated series The Archies, Ghostbusters, Casper and Friends, and Bravestarr. Available in 73% of the country, Me-TV is owned and operated by Weigel Broadcasting Co. and distributed by MGM Television.
Nickelodeon will premiere a new hour-long episode of The Fresh Beat Band (www.nickjr.com/the-fresh-beat-band), The Wizard of Song, inspired by The Wizard of Oz, guest-starring Jason Mraz and Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) on Friday, Jan. 27, at 1p. Nickelodeon is also set to release The Fresh Beat Band soundtrack, The Fresh Beat Band: Music From the Hit TV Show, on iTunes and in stores on Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Targeted to preschoolers and their families, the soundtrack features 19 songs from all three seasons of the live-action, music appreciation-centric series. The soundtrack will debut just ahead of The Fresh Beat Band’s nationwide, 15-week live concert tour (www.freshbeatbandlive.com and www.facebook.com/freshbeatbandlive), which kicks off on February 2 in Anaheim, California.
FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and Mattel announce at NATPE they have entered into a new distribution deal with Cartoon Network Latin America for the new CGI animated action-adventure series Max Steel (26×30). The boy-targeted Max Steel series is set to launch in 2013 on Cartoon Network channels throughout Latin America, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Based on the popular Mattel character and property, the Max Steel TV series is co-produced by Mattel and FME, with Nerd Corps Entertainment serving as the animation studio. The series follows the adventures of Maxwell, a 16-year-old earthling with turbo powers, his new alien pal Steel who gives Maxwell the ability to harness his power and merge his own to create a unified super force, Max Steel. The two must overcome their differences in order to work together to save the Earth from all sorts of evildoers. FME will also manage worldwide distribution of the series (excluding the US), as well as global home entertainment rights.
BBC Worldwide inks a deal with Comcast Media Center (CMC) to offer programming from its Spanish-language US preschool channel CBeebies via CMC’s VOD content distribution platform. CBeebies Spanish-language programming includes El Jardin de los Suenos, Dibujemos con Squiglet and Boogie Beebies, and series that include El Closet de Cloe, Zigby and Finley: El Camioncito de Bomberos. CMC’s VOD distribution includes cable systems across multiple MSOs serving 56+ million VOD-enabled households in the US and Canada.
Zodiak Kids completes a range of TV deals with Latin American and Spanish broadcasters for 350+ hours or programming.
- Cartoon Network Latin America acquires all six seasons of the animated series Totally Spies (156×26) and Totally Spies The Movie (1×75), Redakai, Conquer the Kairu (52×26), and The Qpiz (52×3). Both Totally Spies and Redakai are produced by Marathon Media, part of Zodiak Kids and The QPiz is a Zodiak Active production.
- YUPS, a new Latin American entertainment channel, picks up the live-action series, seasons 1 and 2 of Dani’s House (25×30), seasons 1 and 2 of Trapped (52×30), and Summer in Transylvania (20×30) – all produced by The Foundation, part of Zodiak Kids.
- Spanish channels: TV3 Catalunya kid’s channel, Super 3 acquires Rekkit Rabbit (104×13), Amazing Spiez (52×26), and Marsupilami (52×26); ETB also picks up Rekkit Rabbit, as well as seasons 1, 2, 4 and 5 of Totally Spies (104×26), Amazing Spies seasons 1 and 2 (52×26), and 26 episodes of Martin Mystery. Rekkit Rabbit, Amazing Spiez and Martin Mystery are Marathon Media productions, while Marsupilami is a Marathon Animation and Marsu in association with Merchandising Munchen production.

The American Library Association (ALA) announced the top books, video and audiobooks for kids and young adults, including the Randolph Caldecott Medal, Coretta Scott King Award, John Newbery Award and Michael L. Printz Award and many other noted awards yesterday at its annual midwinter meeting, which is being held this year in Dallas. Below are just some of the books that were celebrated yesterday, a comprehensive list of all of the medals and honors awarded, and there are many, can be found at ALA.org (www.ala.org). 2012 Youth Media Awards include:
John Newbery Medal, outstanding contribution to children’s literature:

Coretta Scott King Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, an award that pays tribute to beloved children’s author Virginia Hamilton:
- Ashley Bryan storyteller, artist, author, poet and musician has been named the winner of this award. Raised in the Bronx, he was the first African American to both write and illustrate a children’s book.
Schneider Family Book Award – books with artistic expression of the disability experience in three age groups:
- Children (08 years) the jury did not award a book in this category this year
- Middle School (K9-13) two books were selected as winners this year: close to famous, author Joan Bauer (Viking, a division of Penguin Young Readers Group); and Wonderstruck: A Novel in Words and Pictures, author Brian Selznick (Scholastic Press, an imprint of Scholastic)
- Teens (14-18) The Running Dream, author Wendelin Van Draanen (Alfred A. Knopf, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books)
The Pura Belpre Award – honors Latino author and illustrators celebrating Latino culture and experience:
- Author award Under the Mesquite, written by Guadalupe Garcia McCall (Lee and Low Books)
- Illustrator award Diego Rivera: His World and Ours, illustrated and written by Duncan Tonatiuh (Abrams Books for Young Readers, an imprint of ABRAMS)
Andrew Carnegie Medal for excellence in children’s video:

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Red Kite Animations (Dennis & Gnasher, Marvo the Wonder Chicken, The Secret World of Benjamin Bear, and The Imp) appoints Leanne Preston as Development Manager. She will report to Executive Director and CCO, Ken Anderson. Preston previously served as a Development Executive with Nickelodeon. Red Kite Animations is part of the Singapore-based media agency August Media Holdings.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment appoints Trudi Hayward to the newly created position of SVP/Global Head of Merchandise. She will report to EVP and Director/Consumer Products, Jean-Philippe Randisi. Hayward previously served as VP, Nickelodeon Consumer Products, working on properties in the UK and Australia. Prior to that she was the Head of Licensing and Merchandising at Entertainment Rights, and also held positions at Copyright Promotions Group Limited, Beanstalk Europe, Chiltern Radio and Express newspapers.
