Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 24, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Writer/producer/creator Russell T Davies (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who, Torchwood) is teaming up with FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and BBC Cymru Wales for a new kid-targeted action/adventure drama, Aliens Vs Wizards (26×30), for CBBC.  Created by Davies and Phil Ford (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who), Aliens Vs Wizards will be produced by BBC Cymru Wales in association with FME’s Kids & Family Entertainment division. FME will also manage worldwide distribution of the series (excluding the UK), as well as the brand licensing, home entertainment and other ancillary rights including publishing. Slated to premiere on CBBC (UK) in fall 2012, Aliens Vs Wizards follows the adventures of 16-year-olds Tom (secretly a Wizard) and Benny (a science genius) in their battle to protect the Earth from aliens, the Nekross, searching our planet for magic aliens who will stop at nothing to find that magic.

February 11-13

The Wiggles and Ruckus Media Group ink a licensing deal, under which Ruckus will develop a series of Wiggles mobile interactive storybooks apps for iOS and Android mobile devices and tablets. The first three titles are slated for release worldwide with English language distribution via the iTunes App store in April 2012, followed by additional Apple and Android releases later in the year.  Ruckus is developing kid-targeted interactive storybooks that will feature The Wiggles’ music, video and educational activities, which will be strategically placed throughout the narrative of the stories, and encourage kids to “Wiggle and Learn.”

UK-based Bulldog Licensing has been tapped to represent the BBC‘s mixed live-action/puppet preschool series Mr Bloom’s Nursery, which airs on both CBeebies and BBC2. Mr Bloom’s Nursery aims to encourage preschoolers to learn about life through the wonders of gardening. Bazooka Candy Brands (www.bazookajoe.com) pulls its Juicy Drop candy line in a new way with the launch of Juicy Drop Taffy. Building off of the Juicy Drop brand’s two-in-one candy experience the new Juicy Drop Taffy candy will allow kids to take control of the own flavor intensity of their candy. Each Juicy Drop Taffy pouch ($1.49) will contain eight pieces of taffy along with a Juicy Drop sour gel applicator, which will let consumers determine the taste. The candy will debut in two flavors, Blue Rebel and Knock Out Punch, and will be available nationally in March 2012.

Nickelodeon is also set to release The Fresh Beat Band soundtrack, The Fresh Beat Band: Music From the Hit TV Show, on iTunes and in stores on Tuesday, January 31, 2012.  Targeted to preschoolers and their families, the soundtrack features 19 songs from all three seasons of the live-action, music appreciation-centric series.  The soundtrack will debut just ahead of The Fresh Beat Band’s nationwide, 15-week live concert tour (www.freshbeatbandlive.com and www.facebook.com/freshbeatbandlive), which kicks off on February 2 in Anaheim, California.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and Mattel announce at NATPE they have entered into a new distribution deal with Cartoon Network Latin America for the new CGI animated action-adventure series Max Steel (26×30). The boy-targeted Max Steel series is set to launch in 2013 on Cartoon Network channels throughout Latin America, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Based on the popular Mattel character and property, the Max Steel TV series is co-produced by Mattel and FME, with Nerd Corps Entertainment serving as the animation studio. The series follows the adventures of Maxwell, a 16-year-old earthling with turbo powers, his new alien pal Steel who gives Maxwell the ability to harness his power and merge his own to create a unified super force, Max Steel. The two must overcome their differences in order to work together to save the Earth from all sorts of evildoers. FME will also manage worldwide distribution of the series (excluding the US), as well as global home entertainment rights.

BBC Worldwide inks a deal with Comcast Media Center (CMC) to offer programming from its Spanish-language US preschool channel CBeebies via CMC’s VOD content distribution platform.
