CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
01/17/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 17, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
While cable operators including Time Warner, Comcast and Cox have answered political pressure over programming content by laying out plans for new family targeted programming packages, several media groups are planning to introduce a full blown parent-targeted awareness campaign explaining the various technological options consumers have at their disposal to prevent kids from watching shows they deem inappropriate, according Multichannel News. The report quotes sources indicating that the effort will be headed by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, The National Association of Broadcasters, the Motion Picture Association of America and the Consumer Electronics Association, and possibly some of the broadcast networks too. I don’t know about you, but seems to me that I must have seen that old Katie Couric public service announcement about the V-Chip about 10 times this past week alone.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Walden Media has acquired the rights to author Isabel Allende‘s young adult adventure/fantasy book trilogy about Alex (15 yrs) a young adventurer who travels with his eccentric writer/archeologist Grandmother. In City of Beasts, the first book of the trilogy follows Alex and his friend Nadia (12 yrs) on their escapades in the Amazon rain forests. Subsequent books, Kingdom of the Golden Dragon and Forest of the Pygmies follow the two in Himalayas and on Safari in Kenya respectively. City of the Beasts will be produced by Barrie Osborne (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), and adapted for the screen by David Rothenberg (Modoc) who will also serve as co-producer. Born in Peru and raised in Chile, Allende is best known for her books for adult readers, including Zorro, Portrait in Sepia, Daughter of Fortune, The Infinite Plan, Eva Luna, Of Love and Shadows, and The House of the Spirits, the latter two which have been made into movies. The books are published in Spanish by Rayo and in English by HarperCollins.
Maverick Entertainment, the UK character/property licensing company responsible for bringing Muffin the Mule back to TV, has jumped into the “wayback machine” and acquired the rights to the 1950/60s Bleep and Booster and Bengo the Boxer Pup (originally a comic strip), two popular UK kid properties, from the estate of their creator/puppeteer/cartoonist/animator/sculptor William Timym. Both properties ran on the BBC’s kids series Blue Peter as animation segments, during which a narrator told the story while the camera panned across illustrations drawn by a hand with a big marker. Additionally, Maverick has inked a worldwide music sub-publishing deal with BMG Music Publishing and a two-year deal with DVD distributor the Lace Group.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The BT Group plc, a voice/data telecommunications service provider and parent company of British Telecommunications, has signed licensing deals with HIT Entertainment and Nelvana, and National Geographic Channel to provide programming to its new IPTV broadband service. Kids programming coming to the service under the agreement with HIT includes Bob the Builder and Pingu, while BT’s licensing deal with Nelvana includes Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, Max and Ruby, Beyblade and Franklin. Slated to launch in late summer or autumn 2006, the new non-subscription based service will be available to BT broadband customers who will be able to select from a range of on-demand movies, music and TV programming, as well as choosing from those shows airing over the previous 7-days, which will be available on-demand. Last month BT sealed program licensing deals with BBC Worldwide, Paramount and Warner Music Group.
Jay Jay the Jet Plane, PorchLight Entertainment‘s animated preschool series, is to Mexico airing on Grupo Televisa as part of its Nino’s programming on Channel 5. Under the agreement Televisa has the broadcast rights to the original episodes and the recently announced Jay Jay Mysteries series (ten 12-minute episodes), which will introduce Spanish language words and Hispanic cultural and features existing characters as well as new ones such as Lina, a bilingual bi-plane. Additionally, Televisa will also work closely with PorchLight to expand Jay Jay’s licensing and merchandising activities throughout Latin America.
4Kids Entertainment has signed a British free TV broadcast agreement with U.K.-based ITV Network for the fourth season of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. The 26 eps will debut on ITV in early 2006. The fourth season was also picked up recently by Alter (Greece), Mediaset (Italy), SIC (Portugal), TF1 (France), Telecinco (Spain), Teletoon (Canada) and Ten Network (Australia).
MarVista Entertainment, producers/distributors of family programming Makaha Surf, the original teen targeted drama series, to French commercial terrestrial broadcaster M6. Shot on location in Hawaii, Makaha Surf focuses on the lives of four determined girls who share the same dream of becoming world-class professional surfers. Produced by MarVista Entertainment and Brookwell McNamara Entertainment, Makaha Surf is scheduled to debut in the US on The N, as 20 half-hour episodes, this summer. Makaha Surf is the first series to be produced under the 2004 multi-series production & development deal between MarVista Entertainment, BME and The N. MarVista is handling the worldwide distribution. The cast includes: David Chokachi (Baywatch, Witchblade), Natalie Ramsey (Cruel Intentions 3, Cherry Falls, Children of the Corn 666, Pleasantville), Suzie Pollard, Ross Thomas (Cutting Edge 2, What’s Bugging Seth) among others.
Just one week before NATPE conference in Las Vegas, Buena Vista Television announced it will be offering into syndication its Disney Channel shows Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens, both sold on a straight barter basis. The shows are also being sold as meeting the FCC Children’s Programming requirements, and can go toward a local station’s weekly 3-hour FCC needs.

Toy collectors alert: For some 40+ years the Christiansen Family, who founded the Lego Group in 1932, has collected antique dolls, tin toys, teddy bears and trains and other toys produced in Europe from the 18th Century through the 1920s (pre-Lego), which the company has had on display in a Lego Collections museum in Denmark, the company’s home base. Last year the Lego Foundation elected to close the Lego Collections and auction off the contents of the museum. Since then the auction was awarded to Theriault’s, a US auctioneer known for its antique doll/toy auctions. Theriault’s will hold the Lego Collections auction in Las Vegas May 19-21, 2006. No worries though about the archive of Lego toys, a separate museum/archive, which is not being sold, will be maintained at the company’s HQ in Denmark. What drove the Lego Foundation to its decision to sell the collection of pre- Lego toys is a question some are asking. While Lego says it simply doesn’t have room for the 3,000+ artifacts, one can’t deny the company has certainly had its share of difficult times recently, but then again see if you can name a toy maker who hasn’t.
