Cynopsis: Kids!

01/15/08

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

In the ongoing joint effort to increase teen safety online, MySpace and the Attorneys General of 49 states and the District of Columbia have established a set of Key Principles of Social Networking Sites Safety to protect teens against predators.  Designed for industry-wide adoption, MySpace improvement plans include making user profiles of 16 & 17-yr-olds private by way of default, as it does with 14 & 15-yr-olds, while also increasing technology to enforce the site’s minimum 14-yr-old age requirement.  MySpace will also explore setting up a kid’s email registry to “empower parents to prevent their children from having access to MySpace or any other social networking site,” while also increasing communications with consumers who file a complaint about inappropriate content or activity on the site.  Additionally, MySpace will organize an industry-wide Internet Safety Task Force to develop online safety tools, specially looking to review identity authentication tools.  Ernie Allen, President and CEO, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has agreed that his organization will serve on the new Internet Safety Technical Task Force.

ION Media Networks and Comcast have inked a carriage deal, under which Comcast will continue to distribute ION Media Networks, which includes ION Television, and the addition of the kid-centric qubo and the adult aimed ION Life.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Production has begun on the new animated K6-11 targeted series Dex Hamilton: Alien Entomologist (26×30). Slated to deliver for fall 2008, the series follows the adventures of a young explorer in the year 3000.  Created by Matthew Fenandez, Dex Hamilton: Alien Entomologist is a co-production between March Entertainment and SLR Productions, as well as Parthenon Kids, which also serves as the international distributor of the series.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon launches a second season of its TEENick series The Naked Brother Band with a special one-hour episode titled Sidekicks, on Monday, January 21, at 8p.  The new season of the series, which airs regularly on Saturdays at 8:30p, includes celebrity appearances by comedian George Lopez, music icon Phil Collins, skateboarder Tony Hawk and Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden.

Seventeen renditions of songs from High School Musical 2, performed in multiple languages by international recording artists, will air January 18 during a special on Disney Channel. The all day event includes a 16-episode marathon of Disney’s Hannah Montana as well as High School Musical 2 (8-10p) with highlights and red carpet interviews.

National Geographic Kids Entertainment and PBS Kids have teamed to launch an interactive website for the animated preschool series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies (pbskids.org/mamamirabelle).  Designed by NDi Media, the site underlines hands-on learning and, like the series, features wildlife videos from the National Geographic and BBC archives.  Among the many other features, upon entering each visitor is given an animal egg to care for while on the African savanna that slowly hatches.

Entertainment Rights secures new broadcast TV deals for the new 2D series Transformers Animated (26×22) and special (1×70) with Nickelodeon in the UK, Gulli (France) and Super RTL (Germany), and further deals in negotiation.

The PBS Foundation has received a $1 million from the Adobe Foundation Fund.  The grant, which is part of the Adobe Youth Voices initiative, will go to establish the PBS Adobe Youth Voices Venture Fund and support PBS Foundation operations.  The PBS Foundation will in turn support professional and student producers in creating both original youth-focused programming and incorporating youth-created content into public TV across multiple platforms.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment complete deals with four promotional partners for the upcoming Marvel Studios feature film Iron Man, which is slated to open May 2, 2008, including Audi, Burger King, LG Mobile and retailer 7-Eleven, Inc.  The new Audi R8 sports car will be seen in several different parts of the movie.  Burger King will feature the movie and collectible premium program in a good number of its locations, supported by a TV, in-store and online campaign, with a US Burger King TV ad directed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau.  LG’s plans include a national marketing campaign featuring TV, print, retail and online activation.  Meanwhile, 7-Eleven will feature a series of Iron Man Slurpee cups and straws at 6,000 US and Canadian stores, which will be supported by radio, point-of-sale, in-store and online campaigns.

Classic Media names Brainytoys Ltd as the Master Toy Licensee for the kid’s brand Little Golden Books.  Under the deal, Brainytoys will a launch a range of products in categories including electronic toys and vehicles, figurines, plush and activity playsets.  The products are slated to be available in the US, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the Netherlands beginning 4Q 2008. Korea’s Gravity, Co., Ltd. has entered into an exclusive seven-year deal with Fox Licensing & Merchandising for the right to develop and publish the one internet game Ice Age Online.  Slated for release in 3Q 2009, the Ice Age Online game will feature elements from both Fox feature films, Ice Age and Ice Age: The Meltdown.

FremantleMedia Enterprises enters into an exclusive multiyear deal with Ludia Inc, a creator/distributor of interactive content, to produce American Idol online games.  Ludia will develop American Idol online games featuring various components including performance, online community and social networking, which are slated to debut simultaneous to the show’s 2009 season.
