Mobile Content Venture, a coalition of 15 major broadcast groups including NBC, FOX and Telemundo, and Belkin will collaborate on new products and application designs to facilitate the delivery of live TV to in-market devices. This agreement follows the recent one made by MVC and MetroPCS to bring the Dyle Mobile TV app to some of the phone manufacturer’s devices. No indications have been given yet in regards to which specific devices will be supported or when the gadgets will be available; just that the agreement will help expand Dyle Mobile TV’s reach to the 120 million devices already in the market. Additional product details might be revealed during this week at the 2012 CES.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Yahoo! will stream Tom Hanks’ Electric City, an animated series that takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, as the company forays into original, scripted programming. The show will revolve around a seemingly peaceful city that is actually besieged by violence; and will focus on relevant social issues. Comprised of 20 three-to-four minute episodes, Electric City will premiere sometime in the spring and will be available online and on tablets. Hanks will also voice a character in the series, which will be available in multiple languages, including French and Spanish.

As part of Univision‘s new multi-year, multiplatform distribution agreement with DISH Network, the media company will provide thousands of hours of Spanish-language content (including television novellas and movies) for inclusion in DISH’s Blockbuster @Home streaming service.

Speaking of DISH’s Blockbuster @Home service, the satellite provider has upgraded its Remote Access iPad app, now allowing Blockbuster @Home subscribers to stream thousands of movies and TV shows to their Apple tablet. Furthermore, customers who subscribe to select premium channel packages, including HBO and Cinemax, will also receive streaming access via this free app.

Netflix has officially, finally debuted in the U.K. and Ireland. Customers who sign up for the service will have access to Netflix’s library via online streaming, game consoles, tablet devices and smartphones. Netflix is charging 5.99 pounds per month in the U.K. and 6.99 euros per month in Ireland; both roughly translate to $9 per month. However, as it has been its custom, Netflix will first offer a one-month free trial for all users in both countries. For what it’s worth, Netflix stock rose 14% yesterday and closed at $98.18, its highest close since Oct. 24, 2011, according to Bloomberg.

Digital content company DoubleBounce has added Yahoo! and AOL as new clients, as well as six production companies as new content providers. Serving as an intermediary between the two, DoubleBounce provides clients access to its database of projects, originally developed for television, from content providers. The client can view pilots, talent reels and other footage, and if they find any project interesting, can commission it to be produced as an original short-form video series or branded entertainment.

An upgrade to the Rovi Home Entertainment solution now features support for over-the-top storefronts delivering video content through the web. The update includes the addition of DivX Plus streaming technology, as well as enabling support for the UltraViolet Digital Library for companies who want to develop storefronts and services compatible with Hollywood’s new digital download and streaming solution. Platforms supported by the upgrade include connected TVs, digital stores, Blu-ray players, iOS and Android devices, as well as consoles such as the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

Dating Rules From My Future Self is a new web series from Alloy Entertainment, the production company behind Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries. Starring Shiri Appleby and Taylor Kinney, the series premiered yesterday on Facebook (it can be found here). New episodes of the nine-episode series will air every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Amalgamated Living has signed a development deal with Wolper Organization, a division of Warner Bros. Television, to turn Amalgamated’s popular web series, Rap Rinse Repeat, into a 30-60 minute reality TV show. The series, which focuses on hair colorist Christopher Gamper-Crabaugh originally launched on YouTube in 2010. By March 2011, the show had reached half a million views. Mark Wolper, president of Wolper Organization, will serve as show runner, and will look to sign a network deal for the new series in 2012.

SheKnows.com, a division of Evolve Media Corp. directed towards women, has announced the launch of Mommalogues, a video blog website that will feature regular contributions from celebrity moms. For the month of January, conversations revolving around parenting topics will be led by actress Candice Cameron Bure, as well as other popular mom bloggers. The video blogs will be edited by the company’s Emmy Award-winning video team, SheKnowsTV.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

News aggregation site BuzzFeed has raised $15.5 million in Series C funding led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). As part of its investment, NEA general partner Patrick Kerins will join the board. Huffington Post co-founder will become new Executive Chairman at the company. BuzzFeed co-founder Jonah Peretti tells TechCrunch that the site will refocus its efforts toward becoming “an organization that does real reporting and original content.” However, fans of the site shouldn’t fret as it will also continue to mix in the funny slideshows with more serious news.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

In a Digiday industry survey of more than 450 advertising executives, marketers say that brand advertising will account for nearly 60% of their digital spending in 2012. In addition, 64% of respondents plan to increase online brand advertising budgets in 2012, with 22% indicating the increase in spending will surpass 20%. To account for this shift toward brand advertising, 60% of marketers revealed that they will allocate dollars away from direct response advertising initiatives. The survey was sponsored by online ad tech company Vizu Corporation.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Crackle, Sony’s premium video service, accumulated a total of 227 million visits in 2011, or a 54% increase over the previous year. The good news didn’t end there as the December of 2011 witnessed Crackle establishing a couple of all-time records in terms of traffic: tablet visits for Crackle were up 45% in December 2011 over November, while over-the-top visits were up 65% over the previous month. In fact, of the 27 million total visits in December of last year, 30% were from a connected device, which is up from less than the 5% witnessed by December 2010.

According to LinkedIn’s 2012 Consumer Electronics Report, LinkedIn users are more likely to have tablets, smartphones and even Bluetooth in their cars, than the general online population in the U.S. In specific numbers, 41% of LinkedIn members plan on spending $1,000 or more on consumer electronics in 2012, compared to 29% of the general online U.S. population. LinkedIn users are 51% more likely to own or use a smartphone and 85% more likely to own or use a tablet (most likely the iPad) than the average online U.S. adult. The report from the professional social network also took a look at what sources LinkedIn members prefer to consult before making purchasing decisions:

  • 82% of LinkedIn members believe companies should have a presence on social media, compared to 75% among the general online U.S. population.
  • 64% of members agree that brands should also interact with consumers via social media.
  • 92% of members who plan to purchase at least one CE device will consult a colleague.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Flingo has introduced a one-click social media posting functionality for Facebook and Twitter via its SyncApps platform for smart TVs. With one press of the remote, viewers will be able to engage in social media conversations regarding the television program(s) they are watching. This capability will be first featured through apps created for A+E Networks’ HISTORY and A&E Channels.

Disney has unveiled Marvel: Avengers Alliance, a combat-based Facebook game that will launch within the next three months. Produced in conjunction with its social games division, Playdom, and Marvel, the game will feature popular characters from the Marvel Universe, including Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and Spider-Man. In the game, players recruit superheroes to their team and are charged with training them for combat. Players will be able to battle friends for in-game rewards.

Noticias Univision is a new app from Univision’s news division available for free in the Apple App Store. Optimized for the iPhone and iPod Touch, the mobile app looks to provide real-time coverage of national, local and international news, as well as relevant content about the user’s hometown. It will keep users updated on relevant issues for the Hispanic audience in the U.S., such as the U.S. and Mexico presidential elections. Other features include videos, weather, social media sharing and the ability for users to report on a news item via uploading photos or videos.

Gannett has announced that Dan Thomas has been named Senior Vice President of Strategic Accounts for USA TODAY. Most recently a brand exec at Sony Pictures Television, Thomas will focus on managing an advertising sales team, which is tasked with making new business acquisitions, at his new position. He will be based out of New York and will report to Lee Jones, senior vice president of advertising.
