Cynopsis: Kids!

02/08/11

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 8, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (JCC), Qatar-based broadcaster, extend their relationship by inking a new co-production deal to collaborate on projects over the next five years.  Under the agreement, NHK and JCC plan to develop and produce educational programs focusing on science, discovery, technology, the environment and education.  Prior to this, the two broadcasters worked together on the science entertainment series Discover Science, which was a co-production with NHK affiliate NHK Educational Corporation (NED).  NHK, JCC, and NED will discuss a sequel to the Discover Science series.  The agreement will also see JCC take part in the Legends of the Deep, about exotic undersea beasts, a co-production between NHK/NHK Enterprises and Discovery Science Channel that is currently in production and slated to air in 2012, and Cosmic Shore, which will focus on the zone between Earth’s upper atmosphere and space that will include placing an HD camera on the International Space Station to capture images.

As part of an ongoing effort to promote online safety, Yahoo Inc. today launches Yahoo! Safely ( http://safely.yahoo.com ) across 25 countries worldwide (14 languages), which coincides today with Safer Internet Day ( www.saferinternet.org ).  The site aims to provide online safety information for teens, parents and educators, including about managing one’s digital reputation, steering clear of cyber-bullying, and learning how protect against various risks on mobile devices.  Additionally, in support of Safer Internet Day, Yahoo! is partnering with Insafe, which is co-founded by the European Commission, and offering up five tips for online gaming and social networking: Think before you post (protect your image); be a good sport (respect other online players); take action and report bullying (don’t stand by, be part of the positive change); spread smiles with your phone (be thoughtful about what you say in texts); unplug and connect with your world (unplug and connect with friends/family and the real world).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBS Films acquires the exclusive rights to author Marie Lu’s young adult fantasy/adventure novel LegendTemple Hill‘s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey (Twilight Saga, Nativity Story, Dear John) are set to develop and produce the story for the big screen.  Penguin Group’s Putnam Children’s imprint plans to publish Legend, the first book in the series, which Lu has planned as a trilogy, in November 2011. CBS Films has the rights to the entire trilogy as well as any sequels and spinoffs.  Set in a dark future, North America has split into two warring nations.  The story follows Day, a young Robin Hood, and June, the teen prodigy hired to hunt him down; together they uncover an impossible truth about their totalitarian leaders.  SVP/Production Maria Faillace and Creative Executive Ryan Conroy will oversee the project for CBS Films.

Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum movies, Date Night, Cheaper by the Dozen, Big Fat Liar) will direct the remake of Fantastic Voyage, the sci-fi movie remake produced by James Cameron for Fox, per Variety.  The script for the new version of Fantastic Voyage is written by Shane Salerno (Shaft), with re-writes by Laeta Kalogridis, who served as executive producer on Avatar.  Fox released the original Fantastic Voyage movie in 1966.

Today’s Trivia Question:  This early 1990s cartoon series on Fox was set in a small town behind the world’s largest pig farm.  The key characters were three brothers – Bo, Portly and Pighead, who worked together to fight against the tyrannical Rembrand Proupork.  What was the name of this series? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
