Cynopsis
02/07/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 7, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
An average of 90.7 million US television viewers tuned into the Super Bowl XL on Sunday night, giving this game the largest averages audience in 10 years. Among the coveted A18-49 crowd, it delivered a 34.6 rating. The game kicked off at 6:26 and ended at 10:10p, and I suppose it helped that the momentum of the game shifted between the two teams numerous times throughout all four quarters. Immediately after the post game coverage (10-10:27p), Grey’s Anatomy aired on ABC and delivered an average audience of 38.1 million, and earning a 16.6 rating among A18-49. According to ABC, Grey’s Anatomy was the third most watched telecast to follow the Super Bowl in the past 18 years, behind the Survivor II premiere in 2001, and Friends in 1996. (Final ratings for Sunday night will be in tomorrow’s edition of Cynopsis.)
Tonight’s Season Premiere:
UPN Get This Party Started at 9p
Tonight’s Season Finale:
WE: Secret Lives of Women at 10p
*MORE GOOD STUFF*
In previous years, I’ve provided for you here the Turner House Super Bowl Commercial Picks of the Night. As the kids get older and the “test kitchen” shrinks, we found ourselves for the first time ever at a Super Bowl Party. Why no parties in the past? Clearly, we had no friends, but that’s neither here nor there. This year, the mostly adult group we partied with chose two advertisers as the standouts, with a couple of honorable mentions. The two top choices were the AmeriQuest ads – zapping a fly with a defibrillator in the ER, and the airplane turbulence; and the Michelob Dark spot where the pretty young blonde was severely tackled in the friendly game of touch football. These two advertisers got the biggest and most favorable responses. Honorable mentions to: Fed Ex Cave Man, Diet Pepsi stunt double, Nationwide Fabio Shampoo, Budweiser horse pulls the wagon with a little help from his friends, and MacGyver’s Mastercard (sentimental favorite). As for those commercials this crowd thought stunk: Burger King’s Whopperettes and the Hummer 3 which encouraged such groans such as “oh, that’s disgusting”. Most compelling promo for the night? Grey’s Anatomy “we have a Code Black”. All in all, the general consensus were the commercials were very “safe” this year and were almost entirely “like watching a kids show.”
Turner Classic Movies has picked up the cable TV rights to 100+ film titles from the Paramount Pictures library, as well as renewed a handful of others. Among the newcomers to TCM will be Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and several films starring Elvis Presley. Among the renewals are The African Queen and Sunset Boulevard. The deal kicks off in 2008 in the US and Canada.
A new reality series coming to MTV on March 7 at 1030p called 8th & Ocean. This show features a slew of young attractive model wannabes, both men and women. Focused on 10 finalist, they live together, travel to and from casting calls and go-sees, and enjoying the South Beach environment. It seems to be a cross between Real World and America’s Next Top Model, and promises all the drama of each.
Reality series The Starlet will debut on the UK’s LIVINGtv this spring. LIVINGtv acquired the rights to the series from Warner Bros. Int’l Television Distribution, and plans to air the program in primetime. The six one-hour episodes takes a group of 10 aspiring actresses and puts them thru a so-called Hollywood Boot Camp with classes, performances, screen tests and critiques. Judges include Faye Dunaway, Vivica A. Fox and casting director Joseph Middleton, with host Katie Wagner (daughter of Robert Wagner). And the winner? She gets a role on the WB’s One Tree Hill, a talent deal with The WB (transferrable to the CW?) and a one year contract with 3 Arts Entertainment.
Black Family Channel will pre-empt its regularly scheduled programming today at noon to broadcast the funeral services of civil rights activist, Coretta Scott King. The channel will air live, uninterrupted and commercial-free coverage of the entire ceremony. Observances will be held in Lithonia, Georgia.
TV One will offer coverage of Coretta Scott King‘s funeral today from noon-3p. In addition, the network will provide special commentary from TV One commentator/journalist Roland Martin
BET News will also carry the funeral service of Coretta Scott King today at noon, as well as air a special this evening Coretta Scott King: Married to the Missions at 730p, which examines the life, significance and influence of King as a spiritual icon of freedom and equality. The show will be hosted by Carlos Watson. At the same time, BET.com will stream retrospective video packages, commentary and historic photography of Mrs. King’s life as well as segments of her funeral.
Citadel Broadcasting has acquired ABC Radio‘s 22 AM and FM stations and most of ABC Radio holdings from The Walt Disney Company for a price tag of approx $2.7 billion. Carved out of the agreement are ESPN Radio and Radio Disney which will remain part of Disney. The new company will be named Citadel Communications and headed up by Citadel’s CEO, Farid Suleman. Expected to be completed by year’s end, the deal will make Citadel the third largest radio group in the US, with 177 FM stations and 66 AM stations in major markets, in addition to the ABC Radio Networks. ABC Radio includes 14 FM and 8 AM radio stations in nine major markets, including NY, LA, Chicago, San Francisco and Dallas.
Bravo will be taking its newest endeavor straight to the internet. The network is reportedly joining forces with PlanetOut Inc. to launch a broadband channel targeting the GLBT community. OutZonetv.com will include up to 30-minute shows as streaming video content as well as original reality shows produced specifically for the website.
Emmy-nominated editor and music supervisor Adam “Chip” Pauken passed away February 2 after a lengthy illness. Pauken, well-respected in the industry, was a veteran editor and music supervisor of numerous shows including Before They Were Stars (ABC), Television’s Greatest Performances (ABC) and The Fritz Pollard Story (ESPN), which helped get Pollard elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Pauken, 48, is survived by his wife, Carole, two daughters, his mother Connie and brother Chris. Services will be Tuesday, February 7 at 10a at the Gates, Kingsley & Gates Moeller Murphy Funeral Home, 1925 Arizona, Santa Monica, 90404 (310)395-9988. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations, to help offset medical expenses, be made to the Chip Pauken Trust Account c/o Nash Entertainment,1438 N. Gower St. Box 10 Hollywood, CA 90028.
* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *
CBS has picked up a new drama pilot called Edison, with John Leguizamo set to star as an undercover cop. The project is from Touchstone TV and CBS Paramount Network TV.
Fox has ordered That Guy from Montecito Pictures and Regency TV, about a guy who wakes up one day and realizes his friends have all turned into middle America with families and minivans, and he isn’t.
Casting Notes …
Lucy Lawless will join the cast of SCI FI Channel’s original series Battlestar Galactica. Lawless will reprise her role as D’Anna Biers in a 10-episode arc in the series’ third season, which begins productions in April.
ABC‘s untitled comedy project starring Danny Comden has added Scott Caan to the cast. The show begins with Comden who wakes up one day to the realization his life did not live up to what he predicted in his college graduation speech. Caan plays his best friend. This comedy is from producers Pete Aronson, Peter Johnson and McG.
An un-casting – Dylan McDermott has opted out of CBS‘ comedy project 3 Lbs. from CBS Paramount Network TV, which is being reworked, and is now looking for a new lead and a new title. Originally this show was about a neurosurgeon who was looking for someone to replace him in his practice as he feared his own mind may not be as sharp as it once was.
CBS has brought in Jane Krakowski to star in its comedy pilot Sex, Power, Love & Politics, focused on a group of Capitol Hill staffers, all in their mid-30s. This project is from Sony Pictures TV
Fox has added cast to a couple of its drama pilots:
- Damages from 20th Century Fox TV has named Cole Hauser as the lead, in a story about lawyers who are grappling with getting their jobs done and their ethical leanings.
- 13 Graves from 20th has added Norman Reedus in his first television role. His past credits include films such as 8MM, Blade 2 and Boondock Saints.
Casting Call: Rock Star from Mark Burnett Prods returns to CBS this summer, and auditions start in March in several cities across the US and one visit to Vancouver, B.C. If this is your thing and you’re over 21, you’ll want to check either CBS.com or http://rockstar.msn.com for an application as well as specific dates and cities. Remember, the dates/cities can change, so double check before you head out.
