02.05.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 5, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
NBC: Smash at 9p
SCIENCE: Strip the City at 9p
BIO: Monstresses at 10p
Comedy Central: Tosh.0 at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
PBS: Pioneers of Television at 8p
The CW: Emily Owens, M.D. at 9p
Destination America: Ghost Town Gold at 10p

Following the ratings smash that was Sunday night’s Super Bowl XLVII on CBS Sunday night, freshman drama Elementary delivered 20.8 million total viewers and posted a 7.8 rating among A18-49 viewers as well as an 8.3 rating with A25-54. This is a definite downturn in post-Super Bowl programming ratings: last year’s NBC broadcast of The Voice, for example, pulled in 37.6 million total viewers. The low numbers could be due, in part, to the 34-minute mid-game blackout that pushed the start of Elementary into the 11p hour. However, CBS also reports that The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson Super Bowl Special delivered the program’s second-largest audience ever, with a 1.7 among A18-49 and 4.43 million total viewers.

Going head-to-head against the Super Bowl, PBS and WGBH announced Downton Abbey, Season 3 on MASTERPIECE CLASSIC was #2 behind the Super Bowl with a 4.4 HH rating, based on Nielsen overnights data and 6.6 million total viewers per Nielsen Fast National data.  So far this third season, Downton Abbey has averaged +72% above the first five episodes of season 2.  Downton Abbey is a Carnival/MASTERPIECE co-production.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ABC revealed the final two celebrity contestants joining the cast of its upcoming diving competition series Splash.  NBA star and author Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and extreme skier Rory Bushfield now link up with previously-announced cast members Louie Anderson, Drake Bell, Chuy Bravo, Nicole Eggert, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Ndamukong Suh, Katherine Webb and Kendra Wilkinson.  The ten celebrities will train and complete in various diving exercises in front of a live audience.  Splash is from Eyeworks USA and debuts on ABC March 19 at 8p.

Eager to offer Hispanic audiences blockbuster theatrical hits, Telemundo Media entered a licensing deal with Lionsgate to broadcast a variety of films including The Hunger Games starring Jennifer Lawrence.  Telemundo will bring The Hunger Games to US Spanish-language television audiences for the first time starting in 2015.  The multi-year deal includes The Last Stand and The Three Musketeers as well as 16 other titles.

A new six-part series on Discovery Channel explores the world of marijuana growers and dealers when Weed Country opens February 20 at 10p.  The series travels to the border area of Northern California and Oregon known as the Emerald Triangle where marijuana flourishes and the business is cutthroat.  Weed Country is produced by All3Media America.

Last Friday TV One’s original series Unsung was honored with its third consecutive Outstanding News/Information (Series or Special) at the 44th annual NAACP Image Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles.  The NAACP Image Awards aired on NBC on Friday and the two-hour awards show will re-air on TV One this Saturday at 8p.  Unsung is narrated by Gary Anthony Williams and is executive produced by Arthur Smith, Kent Weed and Frank Sinton of A. Smith & Co. Production for TV One.  Mark Rowland is also Co-EP.

Submissions Call:  If your network is airing Valentine or love-themed programming this month, please send the show title, date and air time immediately to Lisa Ball at [email protected]Cynopsis plans to produce a Valentine Programming Special Report containing this month’s offerings as well as an analysis of this growing content area.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Due to viewer success from season one HGTV has bumped up the second season schedule of Flea Market Flip to debut sooner than expected on March 15 at 9p.   During its first season more than 12.8 million total viewers watched as two teams of flea market finders battled against each other for $5,000.  Good Morning America’s co-host and author Lara Spencer hosts Flea Market Flip.

Fans of MTV’s Teen Mom 2 won’t have to wait much longer as a two-hour reunion special featuring Dr. Drew Pinsky airs on February 11 at 9p, sandwiched between the season three finale that aired on Monday and the season four debut on February 18 at 10p.

~ SYNDICATION UPDATES ~

Daytime talk show The Ricki Lake Show from Twentieth Television will not be renewed for the 2013-14 season.  Original episodes will continue to air until the end of the season.   Twentieth Television’s EVP/Programming and Development Stephen Brown released this statement yesterday: “While we are proud of the topics the program tackled including childhood obesity, life-after the military, divorce, and addiction, we were simply not able to break through the crowded talk show marketplace.” Host Ricki Lake added, “I will continue to be an active and passionate voice for subjects that are close to my heart through a variety of platforms — and a return to my documentary filmmaking work with Abby Epstein.”

All six seasons of the sitcom The Larry Sanders Show was picked up in a syndication deal by REELZCHANNEL and two back-to-back episodes will air in a one-hour comedy block Monday-Thursday starting March 4 at 1p and again at 2a.  The show takes viewers behind the scenes of Sander’s late-night talk show exposing the misadventures of the show’s creators, crew and celebrity guests.  Garry Shandling starred as host Larry Sanders along with Jeffrey Tambor as his sidekick Hank, Rip Torn as the show’s executive producer, Penny Johnson as Sanders’ assistant, Wallace Langham as the show’s head writer and Janeane Garofalo as the talent booker.  The Larry Sanders Show is distributed in syndication by Sony Pictures Television.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Independent producer and distributor of first-run syndicated television programming and owner of eight 24-hour HD cable television networks, Entertainment Studios, Inc. has inked a new affiliation deal with the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC).  The multi-year agreement includes distribution for the Entertainment Studios cable television networks by NCTC members who choose to carry the networks under the NCTC partnership.  The Entertainment Studios’ eight 24/7 linear HD television networks consist of Cars.TV, Comedy.TV, ES.TV, MyDestination.TV, Pets.TV, Recipe.TV, Legacy.TV and Justice Central.TV.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Kelley20th Century Fox TV is producing the project where Kelley will write and serve as EP with Dean Lorey, Bill D’Elia, John Montgomery, Mark Teitelbaum and Jason Winer.  CBS also ordered two drama pilots.  The first is called Intelligence from writer Michael Seitzman who also is an EP along with David Semel and Tripp Vinson; Semel will also direct and ABC Studios is producing.  The second one-hour drama, Anatomy of Violence is from the Homeland team of Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa and Alex Cary.  The trio is set to write and be EPs on the project which is inspired by Adrian Raine’s upcoming non-fiction title, The Anatomy of Violence: The Biological Roots of Crime.  If picked up to series, Gordon will serve as showrunner along with Gansa.  Teakwood Lane and 20th Television are producing.

National Geographic Channel in the US is partnering with Shark Teeth Films to produce two pilots titled Okies vs. Aliens with production commencing this week in Texas and Oklahoma. Okies vs. Aliens follows Bobby Sparks Jr. and Sr. and their crew of outdoorsmen from Oklahoma who are nuisance control experts.  The team travels and works across Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana removing invasive species such as feral hogs and mute swans who are wreaking havoc on residential properties, farms and natural habitats.

GSN is bringing back the well-known game show Minute To Win It and has ordered 40 one-hour original episodes.  This marks the first time the series has been developed by a US cable network.  Shine America is producing the episodes based on the format owned by Shine’s sister company Friday TV.  Production begins in March and Minute To Win It is slotted to premiere in late 2013.  Previously, NBC aired the game show and last summer GSN acquired the off-network rights to the 68 episodes that aired on NBC.  It is not known yet if Guy Fieri will continue as host for the new collection of episodes.
