Cynopsis: Sports
02.05.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 5, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

With 164.1 million people watching all or part of the Super Bowl, Nielsen’s total viewership number was 3% higher than last year’s tallies, according to CBS, making last night’s game the most watched program ever in television history. The contest drew an average of 108.4 million people (ranking third on the all-time list, down from the past two years), with a fast national household rating of 46.3/69. The game peaked at a 50.7/73 from 10:30-10:47p. Super Bowls now account for the 22 most-watched television programs in history in terms of total audience.

Meanwhile, Trendrr reports that there were 47.67 million instances of social media engagement about the Super Bowl on Sunday, easily shattering last year’s record of 17.4 million interactions on social media for the game. (2011 featured just 3.1 million).

On the Air

A trial run on NBC Sports Network last November apparently paid off, as the World Series of Fighting has now locked in a three-year deal with the channel. The promotion will hold six events a year on the network starting March 23 with WSOF 2, according the company.

ESPNU announced the matchups for the 11th Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters slate of games, which will take place on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23. The field will showcase 13 nationally televised games across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3, with ESPN2 lined up for a minimum of three contests while ESPNU and ESPN3 will each host four games. The action tips off on Friday at 7p with North Dakota State/Akron on ESPN2.

ESPN has expanded the ESPNU National Signing Day Special to more than 11 hours in order to accommodate a record number of on-air commitments, including the top-rated recruit Robert Nkemdiche. In all, 17 players in the ESPN 150 will announce their college decision live on the show which will now begin at 7:30a tomorrow morning. ESPNU will be embedded at 13 of the nation’s top college teams throughout the day interviewing coaches, and providing news on each team’s freshman class.

Around the dial on BTN, the channel will air a live, 90-minute Football Signing Day Special at 3p covering each of the Big Ten schools’ recruiting class. Mike Hall hosts with analysts Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith.

Universal Sports Network launches a new series today at 10:30a, entitled Universal Access. Presented by GoPro, the weekly half-hour sports travel program will look at some of the country’s top ski resorts. The first of the series’ eight episodes will air prior to the 2013 Alpine Ski World Championships’ opening event, the women’s Giant Slalom, beginning at 11:00a. Nick Gismondi hosts.

With Michael Jordan about to turn 50, ESPN is dedicating a two-week tribute to the legendary player that will run through Feb. 17. The stunt will feature 23 #MJ50 vignettes on SportsCenter remembering his legacy, as well as a slate of his greatest performances that will run on ESPN Classic and SportsCenter. NBA Commissioner David Stern, All-Stars LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul, Bobby Knight and hip-hop artist COMMON are among the celebs participating in the project.

DISH is offering a free preview of Sportsman Channel through Feb. 26. In addition, current customers can add the Outdoor Sports package for half price for the first six months.

As home to the Baltimore Ravens, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic is celebrating the team’s Super Bowl XLVII Championship with three hours of live coverage of Baltimore’s victory parade and the fan celebration at M&T Bank Stadium today stating at 10:30a.  Coverage of the events will also be streamed live at CSNbaltimore.com and CSNwashington.com.

YES Network offers a special premiere of Yankees Access tonight at 10:30p, right after the post-game show. The episode will feature YES’ Yankees reporter Jack Curry visiting the home of player Kevin Youkilis.
