Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 26, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With the new Gen 6 cars in place, Danica at the pole, and a heated battle until the end, NASCAR ratings soared for FOX Sport’s broadcast of this year’s Daytona 500 on Sunday, according to Nielsen’s overnight tallies. Overall, overnight rating/share for the event hit a 10.0/22 to mark a 30% uptick over last year’s race. That marks the best year-to-year increase ever among metered markets, and ranks as the top metered market score since 2006, when it ran on NBC and drew a 10.1/20. Top markets included Greensboro with a 21.2, followed by Indianapolis, Charlotte, Jacksonville and Dayton.
ESPN sold off its UK and Ireland channels, in a deal with BT Group that includes the ESPN and ESPN America outlets and their live sports rights portfolio, including the FA Cup, Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League, UEFA Europa League, and the German Bundesliga. The transaction is expected to wrap up at the end of July, with BT expected to continue operating at least one ESPN-branded channel that would form part of the BT Sport TV package that will be launched this summer. The deal also allows BT to continue to show a host of US sports currently shown on ESPN America, including NCAA College Basketball, NCAA College Football and NASCAR. ESPN will continue to own and operate its existing digital media businesses in the region including ESPN.co.uk, ESPNcricinfo (cricket), ESPNFC (football), ESPNscrum (rugby), ESPNF1 (Formula 1) and broadband streaming service ESPN Player.
ESPN lined up its slate of ACC Football games for the 2013 season, which will include a Labor Day primetime game, five Thursday Night matchups, and two Friday telecasts. Additional games will be announced. Highlights are set to include a Labor Day primetime telecast on Monday, Sept. 2, at 8p with the ACC debut of Pitt when they host Florida St. ESPN’s Thursday night series, ESPN College Football Primetime, will kick off with North Carolina/South Carolina on August 29.
Time Warner Cable locked in a deal with MLS team FC Dallas ahead of the just in time for the 2013 season that will include 22 club games. The new partnership will allow FC Dallas to travel its broadcast team to all 17 road games and include pre- and post-game shows, dedicated programming about FC Dallas, and FC Dallas programming within other Time Warner Cable SportsChannel shows.
CBS Sports Network offers a women’s basketball doubleheader tonight starting at 7p with Syracuse/Notre Dame. Brent Stover and Debbie Antonelli handle microphone duties. Then, the channel offers Georgetown/DePaul at 9p with James Bates and Tammy Blackburn announcing the game.
Long Drivers of America (LDA) announced that Las Vegas Motor Speedway will play host for the Open Division finals of the 2013 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship. Players will begin their “Road to Vegas” at qualifying sites around the globe starting March 1-3 at LDA’s Desert Launch in Mesquite, Nevada.
WWE is giving Donald Trump a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame, announcing that the famed businessman will be inducted on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Madison Square Garden. Trump’s involvement has been a part of WWE’s most popular events and storylines dating back to WrestleMania IV in 1988 and WrestleMania V in 1989 when he hosted the events in Atlantic City. Other members of the 2013 WWE Hall of Fame Class include Bruno Sammartino, Mick Foley, Bob Backlund and Trish Stratus.
Expect a bevy of athletes to once again grace ABC’s Dancing with the Stars this season. While the cast will officially be unveiled this morning on GMA, Ravens’ player Jacoby Jones was confirmed to be one of the participants, joining previous players such as Emmitt Smith, Hines Ward and Donald Driver from the NFL fold. Other athletes this season are rumored to include Olympic champion gymnast Aly Raisman and boxer Victor Ortiz.
